Since the first cricket captain was appointed in 1869, cricketers at Brisbane Grammar School have upheld a fine tradition in an activity that truly befits the students and culture of the School. Early school matches between Brisbane Grammar School and Ipswich Grammar School were used as trials for selection of Queensland Teams and the first recorded inter-school match between the two schools took place in 1870.

Cricket is played by more than 400 boys each Saturday during the season with teams of boys from Years 5 - 12 playing in the GPS competition. Each age division has up to six teams who play home matches at both the Spring Hill Campus and Northgate Playing Fields. Students also have the opportunity to represent their school, district and state through the Queensland School Sport Association.

All students are encouraged to participate and there is a team suited to the ability of each boy.

At BGS, cricketers are proud to don the School 'baggy' through the underage divisions and aspire to earning the right to one day be awarded the prestigious First XI Cap. As cricketers, we embrace the 'Spirit of Cricket' and strive to maintain standards that reflect a game established for ‘gentlemen’. We believe it is our responsibility to fulfil the sentiments so astutely conveyed by the late Sir Donald Bradman…

'It is the responsibility of all those that play the game (the custodians) to leave the game in a better state than when they first became involved.'

The program is customised to address the individual needs of boys with varying skills and abilities with a central theme for all teams of developing:

  • Experience

  • Ownership

  • Responsibility

Our playing style is centred around intent, control and awareness and throughout the program boys are challenged to continually improve their game in all disciplines - batting, bowling and fielding. While learning and enhancing these skills, boys explore the detailed aspects (technical, tactical, mental, physical & team/personal) to expand their knowledge and understanding of the game.

A team of dedicated coaches comprised of teaching staff and Old Boys facilitate the process of development under the guidance of the Director of Cricket.

The Willow Club is the enthusiastic Cricket Support Group.

In season, further information including training times, squad lists, coaching panel and photographs is available to the BGS community on MyGrammar.
