Football is available to all boys in Years 5 – 12 who play in the GPS competition. In addition to these competitions, several year groups have the chance to play in a variety of state and nation wide tournaments. The Year 9A team plays in the Independent Schools Soccer Association (ISSA) Cup, the Year 10s in the Bill Turner Cup, the Year 11s in the Southern Skies Tournament, and the Open 1st XI in both the Southern Skies Tournament and the Uhlsport Cup.
Boys also have the opportunity to represent their school, district and state through the Queensland School Sport Association.
The GPS football season is in Term 2. All home matches are played at the School’s Northgate Playing Fields on Nudgee Road. Training occurs during the morning before school commences and in the afternoon at the conclusion of school and can take place at grounds on the School’s Spring Hill campus or at Northgate. For Years 5 to 7 boys, one of the two weekly training sessions occurs during their timetabled Sport Afternoon.
A combination of teaching staff and Old Boys with the necessary expertise act as coaches. From time to time, the School will also engage outsourced expertise to coach in discipline specific areas such as goalkeeping.
The Football program is assisted by the Football Support Group, the Wembley Club. All football parents are able to join this club and attend meetings.
Since the 1991 introduction of football as a GPS sport, the School’s 1st XI has won the premiership trophy on six occasions.
In season, further information including training times, squad lists, coaching panels and photographs is available to the BGS community on MyGrammar.
