Brisbane Grammar School Sailing is conducted from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) at Manly. The program is available to boys in Years 7 to 12 and runs primarily in term 1 each year, with preparation activities also occurring in term 4.
BGS teams participate in the Queensland Schools Teams and fleet Racing Competitions hosted by RQYS, the GPS Sailing Championships and the Queensland Schools Teams Racing Championships. Success at state level at times means that Grammar sailors progress to the National Schools Teams Racing Championships and, if successful there, an Interdominion competition with New Zealand.
There are two strands in the BGS Sailing Program: Team/Fleet Racing and Training Squad. In recent years, approximately 50-60 students have participated, with about half of these in each strand. Any BGS student wishing to sail in the program will be able to participate in a racing team or the Training Squad if not selected into a team. The School has 15 Puffin Pacers and four support boats.
The program is coordinated by BGS staff, with the assistance of Old Boy coaches. All training and racing generally takes place on Sundays (State Championships being the main exception) from 8.00am to approximately 4.30pm. On the preceding Wednesday, via a meeting and in notices or online, boys are advised of specific racing and training schedules for the coming Sunday. Boys are also able to sign up for transport between the School and RQYS Manly.
In season, further information including training and racing times, as well as photographs, is available to the BGS community on MyGrammar.
