Brisbane Grammar School’s pioneering Activity Enrichment Program covers four key areas: cultural, sporting, adventure and value-added. Quality weekend activities provide engaging and stimulating experiences for the boarders, which build upon the already strong sense of community in Harlin House. While leave is flexible, for two weekends every term, all boys stay in for whole-house activities. For our ‘boarders’ choice’ weekend activity, the boys enthusiastically nominate a host of practical and innovative ideas. The boarders also enjoy a social activity with a Brisbane girls school each week. These popular events have included barbecues at South Bank, beach trips, evening gatherings at school and picnics in the park.
There is never a dull moment on week days either. Boarders not busy with afternoon school commitments are fully engaged in meaningful and enjoyable, organised activities. These range from the much loved game of touch football on the school oval to participation in some of the School’s clubs and activities, such as Greening Grammar and The Shed.
In recent months weekend activities have included visits to Wet n’ Wild, Dreamworld, Caloundra (with St Margaret’s School), and Suncorp Stadium to watch the Reds, and activities and courses such as surfing lessons, barista courses, laser quest, paintball, go-karting, rollerblading, ice skating and quiz nights. The activities program has never been fuller.
The boarding house also supports boys if they train with external clubs, outside of class time but during the school term. Our boys have been involved in football, rugby league, rugby union, table tennis, basketball and taekwon-do. We actively encourage this variety and have good links with many of the clubs.
