BGS Volunteers Recognised and Celebrated

On Tuesday evening this week (11 October) the many BGS volunteers were celebrated at the annual volunteers’ thank you function in The Lilley Centre. Hosted by the Board, the event recognised the important contribution and substantial time and effort volunteers give to the School. As in the past, a large number of volunteers and staff attended.

As the Chairman of the Board Howard Stack said during the evening, the Board and the School cannot do what we do without the support of the volunteers either through their voluntary work or the financial support that results from their volunteerism; a significant and accurate assessment of the value of the contribution so many parents make.

From the many members of the Auxiliary who contribute in the Grammar Shop and Tuckshop, the members of the various sport and activity support groups who assist at Northgate, the Indoor Sports Centre and the many other venues that we use, the School could not provide the opportunities that are available to the boys without the support of our extended community.

The awards are named after Mrs Elizabeth (Betty) Howell, who during her 25-year association with the School was a willing volunteer with the Art Committee and the Auxiliary. It was a privilege on Tuesday night to welcome Mrs Howell back to the School at this function.

With her usual graciousness Mrs Howell presented the 2016 Betty Howell Awards and in her address recounted her memories of the Auxiliary as it celebrates its 70th year this year. The Betty Howell Awards for 2016 were presented to:

  • Mrs Rhonda Cochrane for her involvement in the Auxiliary, the rowing program, and boarding house;
  • Mr Mark and Mrs Shauna Schulz for their significant contribution to the Basketball program during the past 15 years; and
  • Mr Ian Whittle AM, for his significant and long standing contribution to the BGS Old Boys’ Association.
