Australian Gothic Theatre
On Friday 20 November, the Year 11 Drama cohort presented a scripted performance in the dramatic style of Australian Gothic Theatre. Family and friends were in attendance, along to enjoy firsthand the progress students had made in developing their skills of drama.
The River, The Dirt and Us written by Shaun Charles is a gothic tale that follows two Brisbane teenagers up to no good late one Friday night. In the mangroves along the banks of the Brisbane River, they stumble upon a ghost convict ship, The Murgo, and their journey takes a sinister turn.
The production featured excerpts of the play as part of the students’ final assessment task. The most rewarding part of this production was seeing how well the cast and crew collaborated to stage this show. The students were exceptional in this ensemble performance, exploiting all the gothic elements of this style; including chorus work, physical theatre, live music, supernatural elements, and sophisticated use of technology.
The production enlisted the support of a Year 9 student crew of Sidney (lighting designer), Sullivan, Will and Alex, who helped backstage and with the operation of the smoke machine. Special thanks to Rachel Morel (hair and makeup), Ben Newth (sound design and operation), and Michael Moloney (technical elements), who helped to support the facilitation of the showcase.
Each year a women’s charity is chosen as the beneficiary of fundraising, achieved through ticket sales and donations. This year the boys raised $570 for the Women’s House Shelter, an important organisation providing support, emergency housing, advocacy and information to women experiencing domestic violence.
