The Grammarian | September 2017: Message from the OBA President

The 2017 OBA Annual Reunion Dinner attracted a considerable number of BGS Old Boys, who certainly enjoyed the simplified format, which allowed more time for reminiscing with old friends. Once again held at The Hilton Hotel, entertainment was provided by Gold Coast comedian Syd Heylen Jr. As well as the social side of the evening, many Old Boys supported the School's bursary aspirations, buying tickets in the Audi Raffle. The raffle will be drawn on 10 October, but for those after last minute tickets click here.

The OBA Committee is eager to provide a platform for BGS Old Boys to catch up more regularly, so far hosting two Old Boy Reconnect events at the Shadow Lounge of the Hogan brothers' Jade Buddha venue. These occasions are intended for Old Boys of all ages to attend. The next event is scheduled for Friday 17 November; keep an eye on the School's social media pages for more information.

Looking ahead to 2018, one of the key initiatives for the OBA Committee will be continuing the professional networking evenings. Early planning has begun and to date we have proposed to host events covering the engineering, commerce, law and finance fields. The target audience are Old Boys currently completing their tertiary studies or recent graduates. I encourage those interested in imparting your wisdom and experience at these events to contact me or the Alumni Manager at the School here.

The Brisbane Grammarians Rowing Club is the most active component of the OBA; with over 50 members, they take to the river two or three times a week. The Grammarians provide a great opportunity for fitness and friendship and have had success in recent times in masters events in Brisbane, Melbourne and across NSW. The Grammarians fleet of boats is first class and has recently been enhanced with the addition of a new eight, four and pair. The club is currently recruiting new members and has scheduled a sausage sizzle and row for 8.00am on Sunday 5 November. For more information email Scott Austin here or visit The Grammarians website here.

The OBA is keen to hear from Old Boys who may have a passion to create another interest group whether that be related to sport, music or another area. The OBA will provide you with the support you need to get things up and running.

Next year will be a busy given the School's 150-year celebrations. I encourage all Old Boys to get involved with some of the many activities that have been planned.

I'd like to thank this year's Committee for their continued efforts and also thank Heather and her BGS Advancement and Community Relations team for all the support they provide the OBA.

I look forward to seeing you at some of our upcoming events. If you have any ideas or wish to touch base please email me at
