Leading Self and Leading Others

After beginning his Brisbane Grammar School journey, each young man will quickly become familiar with the School's five core values: learning, endeavour, respect, community and leadership. To achieve our goal of providing a broad, liberal education that enables students to become thoughtful and confident men of character who contribute to their community, BGS boys are encouraged to embrace our values each day.

Leadership begins in the Middle School with the notion of leading self before leading others, built upon the concept of servant leadership. From Year 5, boys are encouraged to demonstrate resilience, responsibility and respect and give back to their community through avenues such as Public Purpose. In terms of formal leadership opportunities, classes elect two Class Captains each semester who epitomise our core values and serve as role models for others to follow.

This year, our Middle School Class Captains helped form the Student Representative Body (SRB) where they joined students from the Senior School to discuss ways to enhance the overall experience at BGS. Initiatives have included supplying sunscreen to promote sun safety and raising funds for a BGS150 gift. The Middle School SRB organised and hosted the inaugural Comic Con Day as a key fundraiser contributing to the installation of the BGS crest on the courts of the Indoor Sports Centre. This was a fantastic event and it was wonderful to see our staff joining in on the fun.

Students in Years 7 and 8 also develop their leadership capacity through our Learn2Lead program. A new initiative in 2018 was our soap-making project, where Year 7 students made soap to place in Christmas hampers for families in need. Forming three teams, our boys worked closely with Digital Media Officer Mr Brendan Kelly to collect ingredients, produce the soap and beautifully package it ready for distribution.

As the year draws to a close, we farewell our student leaders and preparations are underway to support the Year 11 students who take over these important roles.

Throughout 2018, the School community has greatly benefited from the leadership and mentorship provided by the student leadership team, consisting of School and activity Captains and Vice Captains, Prefects and Form Seniors.

Form Seniors play a crucial role in the life of Middle School students, forming strong connections and supporting the younger boys through their formative years. Each week, Form Seniors visit classrooms and social spaces to interact and socialise with Middle School students. Whether it be attending camp, playing handball, shooting hoops or simply engaging in conversation, our Form Seniors help shape the character of our younger students through role-modelling desired behaviours and attitudes.

It is always wonderful to see boys who have been through the Middle School return as Form Seniors in Year 12, wanting to give back and contribute so positively to our community. Our students are the leaders of the future and providing opportunities for them to foster the character traits and skills commensurate with effective leadership begins in our Middle School.
