    Much loved by boarders for 22 years, Martha (Mattie) Bousfield (wife of Headmaster Frederick Bousfield) spoiled them with gifts and special activities. In 1911 she purchased a phonograph and frequently gave boarders new records to listen to. A ping pong craze was fostered by her when she donated prizes for competition winners. In 1921 she employed a singer every third Saturday evening to teach boys ‘glee’ singing.​
