This bronze memorial tablet in the Great Hall was erected in 1942 in memory of Old Boy and first master Richard Powell Francis, who died tragically in the 1893 flood. Francis was an outstanding sportsman, mathematician and oarsman. He attended BGS from 1870-1877. He won an Extension Scholarship and the Cockle Prize for Mathematics in 1876, and was awarded a Queensland Exhibition in 1878, which enabled him to study at Balliol College, Oxford where he was awarded an M.A.
Francis was subsequently a teacher at the School from 1885 until his death from pneumonia on 24 February 1893, which he contracted after helping families stranded by the raging river. Shortly before his death, he edited the first history of the School, Records of the Brisbane Grammar School; 1869-1890, published in 1891.
