This 1947 ink drawing of a man riding an elephant, Circus, is the work of Francis Lymburner, (BGS 1930-1933). Lymburner was a keen art student at the School. His drawings of animals reveal his considerable skill in capturing moment and movement. In 1939, Lymburner moved from Brisbane to Sydney, where he regularly visited Taronga Park Zoo to draw the animals. During the 1940s, Taronga did have an elephant called ‘Jessie’, but the scallops of the awning fluttering in the background and the lack riding equipment indicate this may have been a circus elephant, and not the Taronga Park favourite.
