This handwritten letter was written by James Murdoch, who was renowned for his scholarly pursuits in Australia and abroad. Murdoch, who had previously been Headmaster of Maryborough Grammar School, was writing to the Board of Trustees on 13 July 1885 to accept the position of Second Master at Brisbane Grammar School. He was on the staff of the School from 1885-1888. He then went to take charge of education at William Lane's idealistic utopian settlement in Paraguay. From there Murdoch travelled to Japan, later to return to Australia to head the Department of Japanese at the University of Sydney.
