This photograph was taken on Anzac Day 1923 at the laying of the foundation stone for the War Memorial Library. The event was a momentous day in the School calendar and shows visiting dignitaries, staff and students with pupils from Brisbane Girls Grammar School in the background. The three people on the carpeted dais are from left: Right Honourable Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Matthew Nathan, Governor of Queensland; Chairman of Trustees and Chairman of the School War Memorial Committee Justice John Laskey Woolcock; and Second Master, Stuart Stephenson, (in academic gown) addressing the large gathering. Sir Matthew Nathan laid the foundation stone with items underneath recovered from the original School’s foundation stone at Roma Street. The following year, he used a golden key to open the War Memorial Library on Armistice Day, 11 November 1924.
