    Presentation Trowel

Following a Freemason tradition, presentation trowels were once the expected gift at a foundation stone-laying ceremony. This Lilley presentation trowel, engraved with a shamrock border, is evidence a foundation stone was laid at the new 1880 School on Gregory Terrace. The trowel is inscribed: 'Presented to the Honourable Charles Lilley, Chief Justice of Queensland on the occasion of his laying the foundation stone of the Brisbane Grammar School, 28th November 1879'. Made by Charles Ely of London in 1878, the trowel and its accompanying maul were presented to the School in 1945.
