Volunteer Awards

Since Brisbane Grammar School was established in 1868, volunteers have made outstanding contributions to the wellbeing and future of the School through their support and participation.

The School could not provide the same opportunities to students without the support provided by volunteers in the Grammar Shop and Tuckshop, and the groups and individuals supporting sport and activities at the Indoor Sports Centre, Northgate Playing Fields, Rowing Shed, BGS Tennis Centre and beyond.

The Betty Howell Awards, established in 2011, recognise the extraordinary voluntary contributions of individuals each year who have gone above and beyond for students, parents and friends of BGS.

Named in honour of Mrs Joan Elizabeth (Betty) Howell, wife of former Headmaster, Maxwell A. Howell, the award was created as an homage to Betty’s 25-year association with the School. She was a passionate volunteer with the Art Committee and P&F Auxiliary.

The criteria for these awards is based on community members giving outstanding service through:

Voluntary assistance to BGS;

Active participation in school life;

Initiation of new programs or activities to benefit BGS, and/or;

Support for the School’s vision through encouragement and personal endeavour.

Traditionally, these awards are presented at the annual volunteer and donor recognition function, Celebrating Our Community.

WHO CAN BE NOMINATED?

Any BGS community member who is a current, outgoing or past BGS volunteer. Nominees cannot be current employees of the School. You might consider nominating Support Group, Tuckshop or Grammarshop volunteers, however all volunteers are eligible. Please note, the awards focus on recognising outgoing and past contributions, though all nominations are considered and added to a perpetual nomination pool.

ARE NOMINATIONS CONFIDENTIAL?

All nominations are strictly confidential. Information included with each nomination form will be reviewed by the Assessment Panel to consider their relative merits.

TIMING OF NOMINATIONS

Nominations are open perpetually. However, be mindful that each year’s awards typically recognise volunteers from previous years.

The Betty Howell Awards will be presented at the annual volunteer recognition event, Celebrating Our Community on October 15.
