Cultural Projects
The Student Wellbeing Team is currently engaged in three cultural projects, investigating Bullying, Respectful Relationships, and Student Leadership Development. Each project is currently at a different stage of progress.
The Cultural Project: Bullying is the most advanced of the three. Our partnership with Dr Karen Healy has enabled us to evaluate our current practices to enhance the school culture for providing a safe environment for students. Click here to view a flow diagram as a basic summary outlining the various stages of the project and our progress so far.
Future developments in this project will include Dr Healy developing video resources in Term 3 for parents, students, and staff.
In next week’s Newsletter, I will provide a link to a similar flow diagram for the next Cultural Project: Respectful Relationships and Healthy Sexuality.
The third Cultural Project: Student Leadership Development and Selection Process is in the establishment phase. BGS has been fortunate to connect with Associate Professor Fiona Kate Barlow from The University of Queensland. She has commenced the development of an evaluation framework for review of our current student leadership development and selection processes. I look forward to sharing our progress in this project at an appropriate time in the future.
National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week
At assembly today, boys raised awareness about National Sorry Day and the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. At next week’s assembly, the BGS Student Reconciliation Committee will present on the importance of reconciliation, and what role students and others can play in this national issue.
The Student Reconciliation Committee is also raising funds to supply and install an Indigenous Garden and three flagpoles to fly the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags at our Northgate Playing Fields. We have similar Indigenous Gardens in front of Harlin House and the Outdoor Education Centre at Moogerah. Please support the committee by visiting their stall next weekend at Northgate.
GPS schools will celebrate Indigenous Round tomorrow. Boys in flagship Football and Tennis teams from all GPS schools will wear special Indigenous-inspired gear as part of their playing strip to reflect this important event. The Student Reconciliation Committee has organised a fundraising picnic box activity for next weekend (Saturday 4 May) to raise money for the Northgate Indigenous Garden. Thank you to parents who have supported this activity.
The Student Reconciliation Committee believe it is important for all boys to engage in raising money for the Indigenous Garden. At next week’s assembly, boys will be asked to donate a $5 note to the cause. The boys have developed a clever marketing program to raise awareness with other students. If you son raises this topic with you, it would be great if you could support the issue as well.
Expansion of the Extended Day Student Program
The EDSP has proven to be a popular and helpful program, providing academic support for students in Years 11 and 12. At the start of Term 3, Year 10 boys will again have the opportunity to attend the program.
In Term 3, the EDSP will expand to four nights per week (Monday to Thursday). The addition of Tuesday evening will provide greater opportunity for those interested in attending.
Term 3 will also see the program expand to include Year 9 students. As a trial, the School will provide a program commencing at 3.15pm and concluding at 5.00pm. This will be for a restricted number of students in Term 3. If the trial proves to be successful, Year 9 students will have the opportunity to engage in greater numbers in Term 4.
Flyers explaining in detail the opportunities for all Senior School students will be shared with parents of Years 9 to 12 students later this term.
Notices
Cold, flu and COVID-19 Update
Cold and flu
Cold and flu viruses continue to impact students. I encourage you to ensure your sons maintain good hygiene practices. Please continue to keep your son at home if he is unwell.
COVID-19
- All cases of COVID-19 must stay at home for at least seven days from the date the test was taken. More information here.
- Close contacts with symptoms must stay home and get tested for COVID-19.
- Close contacts without symptoms may return to school but must wear a mask for seven days after the case’s test date if over the age of 12.
- Staff and students over the age of 12 returning to school after isolating due to COVID-19 must wear a mask for seven days post-isolation indoors and outdoors when they cannot socially distance.
Vaccination
Staff and students are encouraged to vaccinate for both influenza and COVID-19.
Assessment and absence from school
If your son is absent for a prolonged period due to illness or isolation, the information below outlines arrangements to support the continuation of learning and assessment.
- Arrangements and adjustments to schedules can be made to enable students to fulfil their assessment commitments
- Submission of an AARA application will enable the School to manage extensions. Click here for the form (requires MyGrammar login)
- Where extended absences seriously impact a student’s progress, alternative arrangements can be explored; in the first instance, contact the relevant Head of Year (and Head of Middle School Curriculum, Ian Grice for Middle School students)
- Whenever a student is absent, encourage him to stay in touch with his learning and his teachers through Teams, OneNote and Canvas; this will make for a smoother return to school

Boarding
National Boarding Week
After all my years working in boarding, the aspect I still enjoy most is spending time with the boarders on weekends.
Our community is filled with a variety of offerings. From using the Indoor Sports Centre for basketball, futsal or a swim session, to more cultural activities ranging from a cinema visit to visiting displays and exhibitions in the city, extensive opportunities are given to our students.
This past weekend we had two particular highlights. Despite the weather, we spent Saturday night at an old favourite, Eat Street. Situated at Hamilton Northshore, Eat Street is a series of shipping containers all converted into contemporary food outlets offering an array of different treats and flavours from around the world. With some stalls being run by former MasterChef contestants, there is a worthy range of options on offer. What better way to finish the week than with a small treat?
On Sunday, we ran an optional excursion to play paintball. One of the benefits of being an inner-city boarding school is the range of opportunities on our doorstep, including Spec Ops Paintball just around the corner. More than 20 boys signed up for the afternoon of gel ball fun and everyone was asking when we might be able to go again by the end of the day!
This weekend, we will take advantage of the proximity of Suncorp Stadium and begin our program with the Broncos-Titans fixture, which we know will appeal to many of the boys. On Saturday, after the GPS round against TSS, we will hold a special screening of the original Top Gun movie from the 1980s, complete with electro soundtrack and refreshments, in readiness for our cinema excursion to the upcoming Top Gun Maverick. Finally, on Sunday, weather permitting, we have planned a hike to the summit of Mount Coot-tha from Slaughter Falls.
BGS Boarding is more than a place to sleep – it is a home away from home. The activity program, ably led by Mr Scott and Mr Wigell, provides a wonderful balance of events and outings that complements the day school, providing opportunities for connection and friendships to develop.

Students applying for extensions due to illness
Students applying for extension of time for assessments due to illness must ensure that they have done the following:
- Indicate in the box on the Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) form which assessment requires an extension and the original due date.
- Provide a medical certificate completed by an AHPRA registered doctor who is not related to the student. The medical certificate must indicate the specific condition. A broad statement indicating ‘a medical condition’ is not acceptable.
Applications without appropriate documentation will be sent back to the applicant.
Brisbane Grammar School Careers Website
On Thursday, the Year 12s were introduced to a careers website specific to Brisbane Grammar School. This site centralises important information and resources that will assist students in their careers journey (e.g. calendar of events, post-school options, career exploration and career plans). It is a site intended for Year 12 BGS students only, so we request it is not shared with others external to the School.
The Year 12 students also have access to a learning module, via MyGrammar, which summarises key points they will need to know when begin applying for tertiary study from August 2022.
We encourage parents to access the careers website and learning module with their son to facilitate careers conversations at home, in addition to the conversation they will have with Student Services at school.

8B and 8I brought the Year 8 program to a close a Moogerah this week. 8B returned for their rescheduled program at the start of the week, and 8I enjoyed the settled conditions at the end of the week. Due to the recent weather, both classes participated in a modified program, staying at the centre for two nights. Although Lake Moogerah is well over 100% capacity, the lake had not been reopened for recreation and the 8B and 8I students completed their expedition on foot. They hiked from Pepperina Hill out to Bitenbar and up to Pulpit Rock. After hiking across wet paddocks and flowing creeks, the boys enjoyed the views from the top and swimming in the creek.
In 8B, Henry Mellick was an excellent participant. He showed great enthusiasm and engagement in everything to do with the outdoors. Om Thaker was a great motivator and participant. He stepped up to help light the campfire and had success with one match and a good technique. Izac Carruthers proved to be a great team player. Izac consistently volunteered to help, even when it meant doing extra cleaning and packing. Cashy Luo was positive and willing to try hard. Cashy pushed himself and supported his peers on the giant ladder height activity.
In 8I, Sachin Nanda was a great participant with a mature approach to the team challenges. Nikhail Wueseker was an excellent group member. He had a positive influence on his peers and set a great example. Lincoln Dalton proved to be capable in the outdoors and demonstrated great leadership potential during the group initiative challenges. Jackson Peck was a kind and considerate class member. He put the needs of the group before his own and tried hard all week. Lachlan Baker was motivated to take on all the challenges. Lachlan demonstrated a willingness to push himself and find ways to provide support.
Year 11 Outdoor Education Leaders Harrison Pope, Christopher Allen, Cameron McCabe, Ronan Mellick and Josh Stamatellos joined the Year 8 students. These leaders facilitated activities, taught campfire lessons and were excellent mentors for the younger boys.
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 8B Video and 8I Video links.
Outdoor Education photos are now available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. You can then view the photos by clicking on the Outdoor Education Year 8 folder in Pixevety.

Cultivating Resilience
This week, students in Years 5 to 9 attended age-appropriate performances that tackled bullying-related issues as part of the Student Wellbeing Curriculum. Backflips Against Bullying told stories through highly energic and acrobatic performances that evoked student participation and reflection. The evidence-based program and registered Trusted E-Safety Provider shared a message of resilience, providing students with the tools to manage their emotions and develop a sense of control in challenging situations.
Research shows that the resilience levels of our children have dropped significantly, putting many at risk. Friendship issues, bullying, physical changes, identity development and parenting styles are just some of the issues that can affect our children’s ability to bounce back. The critical time before adolescence hardwires our children’s brains into changes that may lead to lifelong habits. Developing resilience can buffer and protect against the internalisation of harm intended through bullying, allowing young people to grow in self-confidence, self-esteem, and maturity. If this topic interests you, you may be interested in reading Justin Coulson’s past article on How can I help my child be resilient? In the Resilience and School TV sections on GrammarWell, you can access this article and further information on cultivating resilience in children.

Guide Dogs Queensland
This year, BGS Public Purpose Guide Dogs Queensland Ambassadors are working with Guide Dogs Queensland to help raise funds to train dogs to assist the visually impaired. For more than 60 years, they have assisted vision-impaired people and their families to live a life of independence, participation, inclusion and wellbeing.
This term, on Thursday 2 June, the ambassadors will run a bake sale to support this cause. We would love for our community to come together and donate items for the day. Donations of cupcakes, slices, cakes, fudge, and other baked goods would be most welcome. These will be collected on the day from 7.30am at Middle School Reception.
It takes approximately $50,000 to raise and train a puppy to be a Guide Dog. Through our combined efforts so far, we have already raised around $10,000 and we would love to raise much more. We hope you can help us to help Guide Dogs Queensland.

Outdoor Education
Last week saw our final Year 8 class attend Outdoor Education at Moogerah. Despite the disruptions brought about by illness and recent weather events, we ensured each class participated in their Outdoor Education experience, albeit in slightly modified formats. I sincerely thank our Director of Outdoor Education Derek Jervis and the Outdoor Education team for their flexibility and commitment to ensuring all Year 8 classes had the opportunity to engage in this enriching experience.
BGS Supervision
BGS Supervision for students in Years 5 and 6 runs each afternoon from 3.45pm to 5.30pm in the Middle School Library. Boys who finish cocurricular training before 5.30pm and are not immediately collected should attend BGS Supervision. A reminder that BGS Supervision concludes at 5.30pm. We appreciate your support in ensuring boys are collected before this time.
Year 6 Far North Queensland Tour
Preparations for the Year 6 tour to Far North Queensland (Tuesday 2 – Friday 5 August) are well underway. Parents of Year 6 students received a letter on Thursday 19 May outlining tour details and instructions on how to give consent. A reminder that the RSVP date is Friday 3 June. A copy of the letter and packing list can be found on the Year 5/6 page of MyGrammar.
Week 8 Assembly
We are delighted to return to our pre-COVID tradition of welcoming parents to attend our final assembly of the term. This is a wonderful way for us to gather as a community and we invite you to join us. The details of our final Term 2 assembly are outlined below:
Date: Friday 10 June
Time: 8.30am
Where: Centenary Hall (parent seating available in the Gallery)
Middle School Sport
Interwing Cross-country
Unfortunately, the ongoing wet weather and condition of the ovals forced us to cancel the first collection days for each of our wings this week. The boys still have their Week 7 opportunity to accumulate their laps in their allotted time and we look forward to seeing the boys, their Senior School Wild Card entrants and their teachers in action next week. Don’t forget that wing shirts and PE uniforms, including shoes, are required to compete.
Middle School Gift
In Week 8, to help launch the GPS Track and Field season, we will be turning back the clock and bringing back the 100-yard dash to find the fastest sprinter in the School. This event was run on a grass track on No.1 Oval from 1990 through to 2011. Some wonderful sprinters have contested this event, none finer then three-times winner Ken Bridger who holds the record at 9.82 seconds set in 2005.
We intend to reimagine this old tradition in the Middle School this year and are seeking applications from boys in Years 5 to 8 who think they have the speed to be the fastest Middle School student.
The Middle School Gift will be run over 80m and will be contested by the fastest two Middle School students from each wing. Students who think they have the speed should respond to this survey and submit their application here.
The Middle School Gift will run on Thursday of Week 8 during Break 2.
Middle School Library
Reading in the Middle School Library
Teachers and students in Years 5 and 6 have been participating in reading conversations this term. These sessions occur during scheduled Library lessons and allow the teachers to really get to know their boys’ reading habits. During each small group conversation, the boys are asked about their reading interests and any obstacles they may have that could prevent them achieving their Accelerated Reader goal this term. They are also asked to commit to a plan for reading 15 minutes a day. For our eager readers this is easy, but some boys find it more challenging.
This conversation brings their focus back to reading and learning some strategies that may help them develop their reading engagement. While these conversations are occurring, Teacher Librarians Ms Palmer and Mrs Lusink are helping boys find books they want to read. These conversations have certainly been appreciated by the boys who are able to hear from their peers about their reading journeys as well as share their own experiences.
Book Week 2022
The Middle School will be celebrating Book Week early in Term 3. Please mark these dates in your calendar:
- Book Week Breakfast for boys and parents in Years 5 and 6 – 26 July
- Book Week Trivia Night for boys and parents in Years 7 and 8 – 26 July
More details will be available soon.

This week, we feature a short Q&A with a member of the BGS First XI Football team prior to their fixture against TSS this Saturday 28 May at Northgate. The GPS will celebrate this round as Indigenous Round, with BGS also conducting our own celebrations the following week.
Ngailu Thompson (Year 11) is a proud Indigenous student who will feature for BGS this weekend and he took time out of his busy week to tell us how special an initiative, such as this weekend’s Indigenous Round, will be for him and the rest of the BGS community.
Name? Ngailu Thompson
Age? 16
What age did you start playing football? 7
Favourite Footballer? Cristiano Ronaldo
Favourite football experience? I really enjoy football tours and competitions – anything that involves time with the team.
What have you enjoyed most about your experience in the BGS First XI this season? The BGS Football Camp on the holidays at Northgate was a great way to come together as a team prior to the challenge of the season.
What are you most excited about for this weekend’s fixture against TSS at Northgate?
This week, we have a chance to prove ourselves in front of our home crowd, which means a lot to us as a team. We have had a few away games recently at Ipswich and Nudgee, so it will be awesome to be back playing at Northgate.
As a proud, young Indigenous man from North Queensland, are you looking forward to Indigenous Round this Saturday? It will be a game I remember forever, and wearing a pair of commemorative Indigenous socks this weekend means a lot to me. Although it’s something small, it gives me a sense of identity and makes me feel recognised for who I am and what I stand for within the BGS community. It’s good to see Indigenous culture being recognised in the GPS sporting system, and I will wear these socks with the utmost pride playing for both my people and my school.
What role will football play in your life once you graduate from BGS? What lessons have you learned this season that will help you with this? Football has played a major role in my upbringing, teaching me lessons on the pitch that I can embed into my own life. This season has taught me that when the going is tough, that’s when your true colours really show; it has taught me to keep going no matter what. Our team values are built around trust, accountability, resilience and courage and I know that if I live these values, not just understand them, then I will be successful.
Finally, when you score on Saturday, do you think you will celebrate more like Tim Cahill and take on the corner post, or Cristiano Ronaldo with the jump pirouette? If I score this weekend, I will celebrate with my team then run back to halfway as usual and continue playing the game.
We wish all BGS students engaged in Cocurricular programs the best of luck this Saturday.
With the overlap of Term 2 sports (in-season) and Term 3 sports (pre-season), it is important that each student is engaged in their respective physical preparation programs on offer across the wider Performance Development program to ensure they are prepared for the physical rigours of GPS competition. Ranging from Hercules Club, through Foundations of Performance Development and into the Senior PD program, we congratulate those students who have remained committed to the development of their athleticism and injury preventative work. If you require any clarification in regard to any of the above, please make contact.

Technical Department update
With only one week until the opening of this year’s Senior Dramatic Production, Lord of the Flies, the tech team officially took centre stage to add the final touches to the production.
The Technical Department, helmed by a student crew – Theo Dickey (Year 12), Rahul Kumar (Year 11), Perry Palling (Year 11), Alistair Langdon (Year 9) and Samuel Harasty (Year 9) – have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the Creative Team’s vision to life.
This year, we have had fun playing with a new tech toy – LED Titan Tubes. These lights are being utilised in stylistic sequences of the performance to symbolise the transformation the boys go through as they turn savage. It has been an exciting challenge to program these tubes, and we cannot wait for the audience to experience them during the production – stay tuned!
To provide our cast and crew with the best experience possible, we have enlisted the assistance of a range of industry professionals – lighting designer Jason Glenwright, set designer Josh McIntosh and fight choreographer NJ Price. These individuals have assisted in providing our students with valuable mentorship to enhance their performance.
This week, the technical crew rose to the challenge of completing a laborious rig, patch, focus and plot of lighting and sound. Getting the technical elements and of rigorous blocking (including technical fight choreography) requires many elements working seamlessly – lighting cues, sound cues and actors’ focus and precision.
Stay tuned with the show’s progress and more updates via @grammarplay.bgs on Instagram.

Grammar Community in Concert - Cinematic
Saturday 28 May, 7.00pm, Conservatorium Theatre (South Bank)
The big day has almost arrived. Final rehearsals are taking place, and all is ready for a spectacular concert. It will be a huge day, with rehearsals all day and the concert at night, so I ask that everyone is familiar with arrangements so that all goes smoothly.
Update
All performers have been sent updated instructions. Please look at these carefully. Please note the following adjustments:
- All Vocal Group and Chamber Choir students are asked to arrive at the drop-off zone at 11.15am. The adjusted pick-up time for all Vocal Group/Chamber Choir students is now 2.00pm.
- The Grammar Vocal Ensemble is to arrive at 11.15am (instead of 11.30am).
- All Middle School boys must wear PE uniform to the rehearsal. Senior School students may wear smart casual clothes.
Arrival and Departure
I must reiterate the importance of Middle School boys being dropped off and picked up at the designated times. Supervision has been organised at these times, but staff have other duties during the day. If for some reason you are late picking up your son and he is not at the pick-up zone, he will be with BGS staff at the Conservatorium.
Clashes
If any boys anticipate a clash between their rehearsal and another BGS Cocurricular commitment, please contact the relevant conductor so we can try and negotiate a solution. Rolls will be marked at the Conservatorium, so it is important our records are accurate.
Tickets and Technology
I hope you have secured your tickets for the concert as it is sold out! If for some reason you missed out, the good news is that you can purchase a professional video recording of the concert. It is worth noting that access to this recording is part of the ticket price and so you will have a permanent record of this wonderful concert. Professional photographs will also be taken and available for purchase. Please note that no photography or videoing is allowed at the concert, so sit back and enjoy the event!
Raffle
The Music Support Group will be running a raffle which will be drawn at the concert so please come prepared to support the BGS Music program in this way. Tickets are two for $5, or five for $10.
Enjoy the concert!

Debating
As we approach the end of the preliminary rounds for QDU for Years 8 to 12, and the start for Years 5 to 7, we would like to congratulate all our teams on their commitment and strong performances. BGS has won 28 out of 42 debates in the first three rounds, with several teams undefeated. Our Years 5 to 7 boys have started training and are getting ready for their first rounds in June.
We look forward to the last debates of Round 4 for our Years 8 to 12, and watching our younger teams as they begin their season.
Thank you to all parents and coaches for your continued support.
Dana Schottlaender
Debating Director
Fencing
The First IV teams remain undefeated after three rounds. The Years 5 and 6 fencers embraced the change from foil to epee. Well done to all fencers for making the most of our fixtures even with all this rain – an advantage of fencing being an indoor sport is that we can compete no matter the weather. Thank you for honouring your commitment to fencing.

Australian Gymnastics Championships
From Thursday 19 May to Tuesday 24 May, the Australian Gymnastics Championships took place at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre. It was a fantastic event and BGS had an array of gymnasts across all levels selected in the Queensland team to take part in this competition, including two BGS students who are part of our Division 1 team.
In what was a tough competition, there were some great results, experiences gained and many chances to learn throughout the week from others. A special mention to our BGS students, Oliver Waterhouse and Alistair Hoole who competed in the Junior International Level 9 U/18 division, along with Cian Clarke who took part in the Level 7 Open division.
The GPS Gymnastics squad now looks forward to the BGS Championships next Saturday 4 June, held at BGS. In what is always a very enjoyable day, this will also be a great chance for the squad to have one last hit out before the GPS Gymnastics Foundation Cup the following week, held at BGS on Saturday 11 June.

Volleyball
The growth of volleyball in recent years has been astonishing. There is no surprise that the rise in playing numbers at BGS aligns with the sport’s growing popularity beyond the GPS competition. Never before have there been so many opportunities for school-aged students to get involved in clubs, social leagues and other external competitions. It is wonderful to hear stories of BGS students taking advantage of these offerings outside of BGS but even more inspiring to see Term 1 Volleyball players go on to be football and tennis players, fencers and most recently cross country athletes, while still pursuing their volleyball interests. A big thank you to the parents and caregivers who help make this possible.
This week, I reached out to all Term 1 Volleyball players to find out what is keeping them busy this term. I was blown away with the incredible response rate and excited to read that over 30 boys reported they are actively engaged in structured volleyball outside of BGS, including:
- Junior Premier League Volleyball (State League)
- QAS Emerging Talent Program
- Junior club training (Bears, Dragons, Wolves and Goats)
- Social and Metro league competitions across Brisbane
- Junior Pirates Camp
- State Team trials
- Queensland Beach Volleyball State Team program
Many of these programs did not exist when I was growing up, which makes me a little jealous but incredibly proud of how far our sport has come in recent times. I was also humbled to receive an email recently about the way in which a group of BGS Volleyball players, who were involved in a selection process, modelled their performance not only on BGS values but on our WAT pursuits (Winning mindset, Accountability and being the ultimate Teammate). These stories remind me that all BGS players are ambassadors for our program and the School.
Looking ahead, Volleyball Queensland have announced they are now accepting expressions of interest for upcoming Junior Volleyball Camps held during the school holiday periods throughout the year. More information can be found via the link: VQ Junior Volleyball Camps. I highly recommend BGS Volleyball families keep an eye out for the January camp, which will take place the week prior to our BGS Volleyball Pre-Season Clinic 2023.

Normanby Blues Rugby Support Group | Rugby Season Launch
2022 Rugby Season Launch and Parent Welcome Function
Everyone is welcome to come and hear about the 2022 BGS Rugby Program from Director of Rugby Phil Mooney at the Rugby Season Launch on Saturday 4 June. There will be coaches and training personnel to chat to as well as meeting other rugby parents.
As we look forward to the Rugby season we also celebrate three BGS Premierships with significant anniversaries this year – 1972, 1992 and 2012.
Following last year’s success we will again be auctioning 15 BGS Rugby supporter caps to parents wishing to help boost the BGS Rugby program.
