A core principle underpinning the School’s strategic approach to building Effective Thinking Cultures (ETC) is the commitment to evidence-based, research-informed improvement.
The Learning Organisation Team (LOT) has dual responsibilities in supporting teachers and teacher teams collect and analyse classroom/subject/cohort data to inform activities aimed at improvement, along with the broader monitoring and evaluation of the project across the School.
Every year in Term 3, LOT conducts surveys with both students and teachers seeking their perspectives about their learning. We also seek feedback from academic middle leaders who are instrumental in implementing ETC, modelling instructional practice, and driving improvement within their disciplines.
The 2022 Professional Learning Surveys for teachers and leaders show increasing response rates and valuing of the range of professional learning experiences provided throughout the year. In particular, teachers and leaders report gaining increasing benefit from discussing and sharing classroom practice with colleagues. Every week teachers engage in timetables professional learning that is supported by their department leaders, Lead Learners and Pedagogical Coaches.
It is clear from the survey data that there is an intentional and shared language of learning and clear focus developing around the Effective Thinking Framework and Effective Thinking Learning Progression used by teachers to plan, discuss and reflect on learning experiences. Professional learning has also provided direct support for implementing improved practices in their classrooms, and the inspiration and motivation for doing so. For example, one teacher reflected that:
I have been more focused on how I question the boys and how I can encourage greater reflection upon learning. I have thought about how to move the boys into an independent space of learning – a space where they can receive encouragement to question and discuss the topic that is relevant to them and their peers.
Leaders reported progress in leading their teams to engage with pedagogical development in their specific subjects. This is very pleasing data and welcome reward for the thoughtful planning, courage and commitment on the part of our academic middle leaders.
The student learning survey focused on asking boys to explain what has changed and what is working for them in their learning. This gives us insight into what they are learning about their learning. To deal with the variety of ways of responding to these open-ended questions, we first categorise responses as focusing on compliance (doing work, doing what you’re told, not being disruptive) or focusing on optimising learning (being more organised, thinking about the quality of learning, developing attitudes/dispositions for learning). The responses in this survey show a greater number and range of optimising responses, compared to previous years, which will motivate teachers and leaders to continue to develop their understanding and skill in teaching for effective thinking. A sample of such responses is provided below:
I believe I feel more connected to the learning and am enjoying and finding everything just a tad easier. (Year 5)
My mindset has changed, and it has more positive thinking now instead of negative thinking. (Year 7)
I have developed my work ethic further and now set goals with purpose rather than mindlessly. (Year 9)
I feel as though I am taking slightly more agency in how I study. Before I just assumed I would be fine, but now I am being more thorough. (Year 12)
The data affirms that our boys are learning more about how to learn well, and have the self-awareness to explain how this works for them.
The data captured in the 2022 survey is vast and considerable time is invested to fully analyse and develop findings that inform our next steps in supporting teaching and learning at BGS. While the snapshot provided in this article represents just one aspect of this year’s data collection, it is a critically important one. The ability for teachers and students to reflect on their learning journey and articulate the progress they have made over the course of the is a strong indicator of the effectiveness of strategies designed to optimise that shift.
The volume of responses and individual insights have significantly developed compared to previous surveys, across all year levels and in all departments, which is a positive sign for our plans in 2023.

Footbridge Closure | Spring Hill to BGS Tennis Centre
Brisbane City Council has advised the immediate closure of the footbridge that connects the BGS Tennis Centre with the School until further notice.
Click here to view alternative walking routes from the BGS Tennis Centre to the School.
Updates will be communicated as they are received from Council.
BGS Magazine goes digital | opt in for print (2022 edition)
At the beginning of each new school year, Years 6 to 12 students take home a copy of the Brisbane Grammar School Magazine, an annual review of school events and cocurricular activities from the previous school year.
We have identified that many parents prefer to read BGS publications online. This is a more environmentally sustainable option.
In January 2023, the 2022 School Magazine will be available to all parents as a free downloadable PDF. A limited number of hard copies will be printed, primarily for Class of 2022 students who will receive a copy at their home address in January 2023.
We encourage all other parents to read the School Magazine in the new paperless digital format. If, however, you still wish to receive a hard copy, please opt in here before Friday 26 November. Print copies will not be available after this closing date.
Note, 2021 print opt ins will not carry over to 2022. If you wish to receive a print copy each year, a form will need to be completed each year during Term 4.
2023 School Fee Accounts
BGS would like to inform parents and guardians of key upcoming dates relating to 2023 fee accounts, as well as some reminders regarding the way in which fee instalment nominations are made (annual/quarterly/monthly). The online Fee Nomination Portal, used for the first time in 2022, will remain operative for 2023. Via this portal, you can:
In the first week of November 2022, we will be emailing all BGS families with reminder instructions of how to use the portal, including the dates that the portal will be open to make these nominations.
If you do not make a nomination in the portal during the above window, your existing nomination preference, where applicable, will roll forward. Please monitor your emails in the first week of November 2022 to ensure you are aware of the key dates. This will ensure a smooth process for the issue of your 2023 Fee Statement and avoid the need for any rework over the term break, and any associated late change fees after final statements are issued. There is a slightly different process and timeline for new students. If there are new families with students commencing at BGS in 2023 who are reading this newsletter, you will receive a separate email communication. |

Three weeks remain in Term 4.
Our senior cohort will finish at the end of Week 7, and the remainder of students will finish the following Friday 25 November at 3.00pm.
There is still much to achieve in the remaining three weeks. I want to ensure students and parents understand the importance of finishing the year well and maintaining our academic focus until the end.
Many of the Term 1 2023 Cocurricular activities are in progress. All students are required to be at school until the final day – this has been clearly advertised all year. If you require an early departure for an unforeseen reason, please contact Ms Rebecca Campbell for Middle School students or me for Senior School students.
I have asked staff to be extra vigilant with students over the next few weeks, as it can be a challenging time for boys to remain focused in the lead up to their final exams. If this is your experience at home, please contact your son’s Head of Year. Our partnership is crucial to the outcome for your son.
In the lead up to the end of the year, I encourage you to work with your son on how he is progressing and ensure he thanks his teachers for their support this year. This is an important part of our partnership with the boys.

Pulse Check
Last week the Boarding community conducted its fourth and final Pulse Check of the year.
It is now three years since we instigated this initiative. With the kind and insightful assistance of Mr Kris Hallis, we can truly see the rewards for the work put in with regards to the insights we are now offered.
Motivated by an article I recently read about a ‘Data-Driven School’, this week I addressed staff and boarders to clarify that we will not become a data-driven program but rather will seek to become ‘Data Informed’. We will develop this approach further in a way that assists in building supportive connections throughout the community.
It was rewarding to be able to show the boarders the results to questions about how healthily they eat, how motivated they are in their studies and how much activity they are taking part in.
I had the opportunity to explain that our goal is not to look for praise and to justify the program but rather to identify boys who are progressing well and those that may need additional support to that already on offer.
The one result of note in our Pulse Check was a changed response to the question regarding the quality of our sleep. With individual spaces in Griffith and single rooms throughout Harlin, the response to this question throughout 2022 has been very positive. That said, we are conscious that Term 4 sees rowing and swimming get underway.
Over the coming weeks our discussion with the boarders will focus on what we can do to address sleep. It may well be that we can adjust aspects of the morning routine. It may be that those who don’t need to be woken are disturbed; it may well be that the boarders need to revisit their pre-sleep routine. What is important is the conversation that takes place, and the deepening and strengthening of that relationship.
As ever, should any families wish to discuss any aspect of the Pulse Check please do reach out to me in due course.

External Examinations – Illness and Misadventure
Source: Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority
Any absence from the external examinations will require the submission of an illness and misadventure application to the QCAA which must be accompanied by a detailed medical report.
To make an informed decision about an illness and misadventure application for medical reasons, the QCAA requires a report from an independent health professional that includes the following details:
- the illness, condition or event (including details of a diagnosis, where applicable)
- date of diagnosis, onset or occurrence
- symptoms, treatment or course of action related to the condition or event
- explanation of the probable effect of the illness, condition or event on the student’s participation in the assessment.
Illness and misadventure applications for non-medical reasons, require written evidence from a relevant independent professional or other independent third party, such as a social worker, member of the clergy, police officer, or solicitor.
In all circumstances, the person providing the supporting documentation must have specific knowledge of the illness, injury, personal trauma or serious intervening event, and must not have a close personal relationship with, or be related to, the student.
Currency of supporting documentation
Supporting documentation must cover the date of the assessment for which the application is made.
A health professional providing evidence must have examined or treated the student, or have been consulted by the student, in the period from two days before the external assessment to one day after the external assessment.
Students and parents should ensure that the attached form is completed, and that Section C related to Illness and Misadventure has also been completed. This must be submitted to aara@brisbanegrammar.com within 24 hours of the relevant exam.
Outdoor Education

10H this week made the most of the opportunities at Moogerah. After last week’s wet weather, the creeks were flowing which provided great swimming holes for the boys to cool off.
Oliver Tu was enthusiastic, helpful, reliable and a great motivator in the group. James Brough was a thoughtful and helpful participant who engaged in the ethos of the program. He faced physical and mental challenges and his determination shone through.
Alistair Sapsford was an outstanding leader who took on prescribed roles and embraced the opportunities and challenges of the expedition. Lucas Bell was a supportive and empathetic group member who facilitated a change in expedition plan while considering the abilities and aspirations of his peers.
Max Liberatore maintained a positive attitude and was a strong group member, consistently helping other students to achieve. Lachlan Elliot led by example, showing maturity and empathy towards his peers, and going above and beyond expectations.
During the final day of the program, the class reflected on what the outdoor education journey meant to them. James Brough noted his thoughts about the camaraderie evident in his experiences:
“The Outdoor Education program has been about community for me. The product of being placed in a situation you wouldn’t volunteer for, facing challenges you wouldn’t think you could scale, but with peers by your side allowed for new connections and a new sense of respect for the people around you. Sure, there was the sense of achievement, the need for perseverance and focus, but what good is that without people to share it with, or people to help up beside you. That’s what Moogerah taught me.”
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 10H Video link.
Outdoor Education photos are now available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. You can then view the photos by clicking on the Outdoor Education Year 10 folder in Pixevety.
Physics
The annual National Physics Olympiad Qualifying Exam is open to all students in Years 10 and 11. It is the first step in the selection of the Australian Team that will compete at the International Physics Olympiad.
Brisbane Grammar School has had a long history in this event. In August, 18 students from Years 10 and 11 joined 2000 peers around Australia for the online exam which included both multiple choice questions and extended problems focusing on kinematics, dynamics, energy, electricity, waves, optics and experimental setup.
Certificates are awarded based on a student’s rank in the competition. The top 10% receive a High Distinction Certificate, the next 20% receive a Distinction Certificate, and the next 30% receive a Credit Certificate. The depth of ability within the group is evident with BGS students receiving two High Distinctions, four Distinctions and six Credits.
Pleasingly, Jaden Teow has been offered a place in the Australian Physics Olympiad Summer School in January 2023. This places Jaden among the top 30 students in the country and is the next step in the selection process to become the 2023 Australian representative team. Jaden has accepted the offer and will take part in the highly intense program, covering the equivalent of first-year university studies in Physics. It is a great head start to further studies and careers in science. This is a fantastic achievement, and we wish him all the best.
Previous students who have been on this same journey in recent years were Nick Salmon (2012 Australian Team), Allen Gu (2014 Australian Team), Edmond Chang (2017 Summer School Attendee), Oscar Meutermans and Elijah Wong (2021 Summer School Attendees).
The performance of BGS students demonstrates that the study of Physics is alive and thriving here at the School. I would strongly urge all eligible students to take part in this highly challenging and rewarding opportunity next year.

Public Purpose | Christmas Hamper Appeal
Christmas Hamper Appeal
This Christmas, many of us are looking forward to sharing presents and enjoying the festivities with family and friends. However, this is not the case for many families who are struggling.
In partnership with the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Public Purpose group is collecting food items from the BGS community for Christmas hampers which will be delivered to families in need. These hampers may be the only gift some families receive this year.
The Christmas Hamper Appeal will run from Week 2 until Week 6 this term and we are asking each student to bring in one or two items – most of which can be found in your pantry.
Middle School boys should ask their Form Tutor about which items to bring in. In Senior School, each Form Group has been allocated specific items. Senior School boys can see below for which items to bring in, or in the Year Level Teams chat.
Thank you for your support to help families in need this Christmas.

Learning and Endeavour are two core BGS values which underpin the School’s commitment to providing rich learning experiences that challenge our boys to think critically and creatively and strive for continuous improvement.
At today’s Middle School assembly, Head of Curriculum Mr Grice announced the academic prize winners for 2022. We look forward to formally presenting these prizes at this year’s Middle School Presentation Afternoon on 23 November at QPAC.
Each year, General Merit prizes are awarded to students who achieve in the top 10% of each cohort. Subject prizes in Years 7 and Year 8 are allocated to the highest achieving student in each subject. Congratulations to all boys who have achieved these outstanding results.
It is important to recognise that many more students have achieved commendable results with further students to be presented with Certificates of Merit and Certificates of Academic Endeavour (Years 5 and Year 6) in upcoming year level assemblies. All boys are encouraged to persevere and aspire to achieve their personal bests as we prepare for the final assessment period of 2022.
A reminder that Assessment Schedules may be accessed through the Academic Tab on MyGrammar and should be checked regularly for updates.

Despite the early forecast for rain and thunderstorms last Friday, we were incredibly fortunate to hold the final Interwing event for the year, the Swimming Carnival, in brilliant sunshine under blue skies.
The hot weather provided the extra impetus to get the boys out of the grandstand and into the water, with 460 races across the four form strokes required to accommodate the number of enthusiastic participants.
The truly impressive aspect of the day was the number of boys in swimming events, who were clearly operating outside of their comfort zone and were prepared to swim strokes they found very challenging. This is our value of endeavour at its best.
I mentioned in an earlier newsletter article that we found ourselves in the unprecedented situation of a four-way tie heading into the Swimming Carnival, the final event of the year. As announced on Middle School Assembly today, East Wing become the 2022 Interwing Champions after winning the swimming carnival and strong placings in the earlier events.

I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of our Wing Captains this year. They have been diligent, resourceful, and ready to collaborate when the opportunity has arisen. They were well supported by our Wing Coordinators who guided them with patience and wisdom on their journey to understand servant leadership.
As we farewell our current Year 8 boys and Wing Captains, we look to the next generation of prospective leaders to inspire the boys. The election process for deciding on our next Wing Captains is well underway. The current Year 7 boys have been asked to submit their expressions of interest and their peers and teachers will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidates during the next week.
Our new Wing Captains will be announced at Assembly in Week 7. The quality of the candidates is outstanding.

Lessons and Carols 2022 – Love at Christmas
Tickets are on sale for the much-anticipated Lessons and Carols on Saturday 26 November at St John’s Cathedral. They will sell quickly so book now.
Next week our wonderful choirs – Grammar Singers, Grammarphones, Chamber Choir, GVE and Grammar Voices – will come together with the special Brass and Percussion Ensemble to put together their spectacular combined numbers.
Last week I shared a link to one of these works (Gloria by John Rutter). To further whet the appetite, here is a link to another piece which will be featured. It is a concert version of the ever popular Hark! the Herald Angels Sing!
A reminder that you have the opportunity to help those who are struggling this Christmas by donating to Rosies – Friends on the Street. Every $10 you donate will support a person through the Christmas season. The link is easily accessed when you book.
BGS/BGGS Collaboration
The Symphonic Band, one of the School’s top instrumental ensembles, is currently collaborating with the equivalent band at BGGS. For three Monday afternoons, these talented young musicians will be coming working together on some joint repertoire under the guidance of their conductors, Mr Jim Noble (BGS) and Ms Laurinda Davidson (BGGS). The photos below were taken during sessions this week.
2023 GPS Music Showcase
Arrangements are well underway for the 2023 GPS Music Showcase to be held on Thursday 9 February at the Old Museum Auditorium. Selections have been finalised for membership into one of the combined schools ensembles – Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Choir, or Big Band. It is exciting to note that BGS has the greatest number of participants across all of the GPS schools. These students have been contacted and should have collected from the Music Office their music and introductory letter with full details.

Normanby Blues Rugby Support Group
The Normanby Blues will hold an Annual General Meeting on Monday 21 November at 6.00pm at the Normanby Hotel in The Parlour Bar. Click here to view the agenda.
We would be delighted for interested Middle School parents to consider nominating for the committee. The younger age groups are an important stakeholder in BGS Rugby, and the work done by the committee today has the most impact on those boys coming through the Senior School in the future.
Anyone with an interest in BGS Rugby, from across all age groups, is more than welcome to attend. We are particularly keen to hear from anybody willing to take up a committee or office bearing position, in particular Secretary and Vice President. If you are interested, please contact Jonte Lowe on the email or mobile number listed below.
It will be a short meeting with an opportunity to catch up over a meal afterwards.
We look forward to a great year in Rugby fellowship and welcoming in the 2023 Normanby Blues Committee.
Yours in Rugby,
Jonte Lowe
