Chief Information Officer | Alexis Hill
Since November 2022, the BGS EdTech department has been working hard to migrate all student data from several bespoke platforms to one data platform.
The completion of this project represents a significant milestone in the School’s Digital Strategy.
It will allow BGS to replace its current School Information System (SIS) with a platform that is more secure and user-friendly for parents and staff.
Over the coming months, EdTech will commence the replacement of the current SIS with the new platform of Microsoft Dynamics 365.
Brisbane Grammar School will be one of the first schools in the country to replace its entire SIS with Dynamics.
Registering for a parent-teacher interview, providing approval for your son to attend an excursion, or submitting an AARA application will all become a simple, three- or four-click process.
BGS is a Microsoft school, so having a Microsoft SIS will give us greater integration across the entire school.
By housing all student data – Academic, Wellbeing and Cocurricular – in one location, we will be able to better understand each boy’s interaction with BGS.
Moving to Dynamics will also give us the ability to share insights into students’ journeys through BGS, creating a stronger relationship between home and school.
This will be a gradual process, but I am sure parents will begin to see the benefits during this school year.

Student Pick-Up and Drop-Off
The School has received several complaints from residents of Spring Hill about the congestion around Gregory Terrace during pick-up and drop-off hours.
We ask BGS families to be mindful of our Spring Hill community as they move through the drop off zone at the front of the School.
A reminder to adhere to the following procedures:
- The front entrance between the traffic lights and the passenger loading zone is to be kept clear. It is not to be used as a waiting area before 3.15pm pick-up.
- Cars can enter the passenger loading zone to pick-up and drop-off passengers before 8.30am and after 3.15pm.
- Do not exceed the 5km speed limit in the pick-up and drop-off zone.
- Pay attention to traffic controllers and security guards – they keep our community safe and deserve our respect and cooperation.
- Exercise patience and courtesy towards other drivers.
- Please move as far as possible into the pick-up and drop-off zone to ensure efficient traffic flow.
- For safety reasons, please do not pick-up or drop-off your son before the pedestrian crossing at the entrance to the zone.
- The pick-up and drop-off zone has a two-minute parking limit. Drivers must stay with their vehicle during this time.
- The staff car park on off of Kalinga Avenue is not a designated drop-off or pick-up zone for students.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School | David Carroll
One of the delights of my job is working with an incredible student body. They are an amazing group of boys who are well led by our senior cohort.
I am delighted with the growth I have seen over the years as they develop an understanding of how to interrelate with each other, and how they extend their respect to the wider community.
On occasion, I receive a negative report about the behaviour of a student on public transport, but these are totally outnumbered by the positive correspondence I receive about our boys. It is a very satisfying aspect of my role and one that I will never take for granted.
On Saturdays at 12.15pm I usually watch our First VI Volleyball team play. Over the years, I have come to enjoy Volleyball and admire the talent that is on display.
I have also enjoyed watching the new senior cohort experiment with the art of leading war cries. It is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, but I do want to acknowledge the effort of those who have been present this year – in particular last Saturday against Nudgee. You have done a great job supporting our team.
Drop off and pick up is challenging for the three schools on Gregory Terrace each day. I know it will cause frustration for you on occasion.
It is worth reminding you that Spring Hill is an inner-city suburb and the home for many people. As well as taking actions to ensure the safety of students from all three schools, I ask that you consider the local residents as well when collecting your son.
Captain's Corner
In my address to the senior school on Thursday, I was asked to present the badges of the Year 9 Form Seniors.
These are the Year 12 boys who attend a Year 9 form class every morning, acting as mentors for the younger students.
I challenged the Senior School to consider that the most important thing about attending Brisbane Grammar School is building connection.
BGS is special because we get a wide intake of boys from different walks of life. This presents an important opportunity – to be able to picture oneself in someone else’s shoes, opening up a whole world of perspectives.
I believe that through this, we become respectful, global citizens.
This message holds particular relevance to our Form Senior initiative. We see the older and more experienced Year 12s imparting their knowledge and leadership to our Year 9s, and in return we see a distinct and unique friendship, respect and admiration.
To finish, I left a message to Year 9 Form Seniors to honour the privilege of their role, and a message to the Year 9 boys to reach out of their comfort zones and interact with their Form Seniors.
I sincerely hope these relationships flourish over the remainder of the year.

It is said that you only need to do something for two years for it to be a tradition.
Five years ago, we began the polo shirt design competition, and it has since become one of the most important traditions in the boarding community.
The competition was borne out of necessity and pride. The boys needed a collared shirt for the Dining Room during the working week, and at the time there was a growing sense of pride in being a member of Harlin House.
The polo shirts are a terrific way for the boys to communicate that pride.
This year, as ever, I found a template to print from the web and armed myself with good number of navy- and sky-blue Sharpies from the local Officeworks.
Without prompting, one of our Year 11 students asked if he could submit a design from a software program. It seemed like a good suggestion at the time, and from there began a new journey in our shirt design competition.
I have to admit that we have been swamped by designs this year. The creative talents of the boarders have truly come to the fore.
Designs poured in through Teams and the ‘Prefects Pick’ selection panel was a much tougher affair this year, faced as they were with some remarkable designs.
I thank all who entered and especially to those who were then selected for the final round of voting.
Our winning design comes from Year 10 boy John-Matthew Vellacott for his Indigenous-inspired design.
We look forward to working with the Tribal clothing company once again to make this a reality for all our boarders in 2023.

Beyond Grammar Masterclasses
This year our Beyond Grammar tertiary program looks to provide a number of Masterclass and small group sessions for Year 12s.
Masterclasses will take place in the Forum at lunchtimes and explore big picture application issues relating to areas of:
- Business, Management and Commerce
- Law, Society and Culture
- Medicine and Health Sciences
- Engineering and IT
- Natural and Physical Sciences
- Architecture and Design and Creative Industries
We hosted our first Masterclass today for students interested in Business, Commerce & Management. This is a very popular area with many of our graduates heading towards Advanced Finance and Economics (BAFE), Advanced Business, Commerce, Economics, Business and Business Management degrees.
Beyond Grammar Small Group Workshops
Small group workshops will take place for a maximum of six students per group where the student counsellors will explore the study areas above in finer detail. They will also afford students the chance to share their understandings about relevant degrees and entry options.
Bookings for the small group sessions will take place online across Terms 1 to 3 inclusive.
Students will use booking links provided via our Teams channel and are able to book into a session of interest offered by our counsellors. There are many sessions across the year, and plenty of scope for students to explore study areas.
University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT)
The UCAT ANZ was established to help universities achieve greater fairness in selection. Around 14,000 candidates sit the test each year as part of their application to courses in medicine, dentistry, and clinical sciences.
The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is a computer-based admissions test, used by the UCAT ANZ Consortium of universities in Australia and New Zealand to help select applicants for their medical, dental and clinical science degree programs.
Details of the 2023 UCAT ANZ, including key dates and pricing, are available here.
Tax File Numbers
A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique number issued by the Australian Tax Office (ATO). It is required for:
-
Starting work (including part-time and casual jobs)
- Lodging a tax return
- Applying for Commonwealth Government financial assistance
- Applying for the Higher Education Loan Program (e.g. HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP) and VET Student Loans when commencing niversity, TAFE or college study.
The easiest way to get a TFN is to:
- Complete an online application form from the ATO website
- Print a summary of the application which includes the application reference number
- Make an appointment for an interview at a participating Australia Post Office
- Take the summary of your application and proof of identity to the interview within 30 days of completing the online for
Visit the Australian Taxation Office website for details about this process.
Year 12 students intending to apply for tertiary study in 2024 should apply for their TFN this year to avoid any delays early next year.

Outdoor Education
8D enjoyed a week of mild conditions at Moogerah this week but were faced with a strong headwind on their final stretch of paddling at the end of their expedition.
The wind struck as the class rounded the last headland and with one canoe capsizing the class were brought to shore to move to a protected area. The boys paddled hard into the wind and were relieved to complete the final crossing to land back at Pepperina Hill.
Mark Dalziel was an excellent leader and contributor this week. Mark engaged in every aspect of the program and demonstrated the behaviours associated with the program focus on community.
Josh Ramalingham developed his collaboration techniques during the group initiative activities. Josh was willing to share ideas, listen to his peers and help put a plan into action.
Raffy Dritsas was a helpful and considerate participant. Raffy was a valued group member during the expedition.
Theodore Andreatidis proved to be empathetic and caring. Theodore was willing to put the needs of the group before his own.
Jack Gorry was celebrated for putting effort into the program and being willing to challenge himself.
Archer Tiel embraced the opportunities in the outdoors. Archer developed his paddling skills during the expedition and got involved around the campfire.
Michael Wang was a kind and responsible participant who demonstrated leadership potential. Michael appreciated the wonderful food prepared by Moogerah Catering Manager, Ms Abby Baker, and the boys were well fed to take on the challenges.
Ethan Koch proved to be an attentive and eager student willing to work as a team. Ethan maintained a positive attitude towards every task and challenge.
Year 11 Outdoor Education Leaders Sam Haines, Max Moore and Thai Bui were thorough and effective leaders. They focused on the needs of the Year 8 students and supported the Outdoor Education staff to deliver the program.
8D Form Tutor Mr Matt Kleinschmidt embraced the opportunities to see his class operating outside the classroom and coming together over this shared experience. Mr Kleinschmidt was involved in all the activities and provided excellent guidance to the class.
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 8D Video link.
Outdoor Education photos are now available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos.
This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety.
Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again.
You can then view the photos by clicking on the Outdoor Education Year 5 or Year 8 folder in Pixevety.

The Year 8 rowers finally had the opportunity to race against crews from other schools at last Saturday’s regatta.
BGS was exceptionally well represented with 11 crews from Year 8 racing over the 500 metre course. The results were excellent, but the highlight of the day was the excitement with which the boys participated and the way they were welcomed into the community by the older rowers.
The Grammar Only swim meet was held last here on campus last Friday night. The event continues to grow in stature, and it was wonderful to see the victorious 2022 team inducted into the Hall of Fame.
At the time of writing, the team were in final preparations for the GPS Championships. I look forward to reporting on another successful campaign next week.
With the GPS Cricket round scheduled against IGS this Saturday, there will be a number of supplementary matches played.
Please check the draw on MyGrammar for games against other schools at other venues.

Book Week Celebrations
The Middle School has been celebrating Book Week with enthusiastic boys crowding the Middle School and Centenary libraries for fun activities each day.
The theme was 'Read, Grow, Inspire' and we chose to honour inspiring books. Boys could make their own dragon (Wings of Fire series), Hogwarts bookmarks (Harry Potter series) as well as watch some inspiring videos.
Additionally, the Science department joined in with experiments inspired by Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine. A trivia Kahoot was also hotly contested.
The highlight was the Book Week Breakfast, attended by boys and parents in Years 5 and 6 on Wednesday morning.
This community event showcased the talents of author Matt Stanton whose message was about not allowing anyone to tell you that you are not creative.
Matt has written numerous books but is best known for the Funny Kid series which boys love to read. Matt also presented to each year group and shared his passion for reading with the boys.
In the lead up to Book Week, Year 5 boys were challenged to create a bookmark related to the theme.
The winning designs were then made into our official Book Week bookmark and distributed throughout the week. Congratulations to Daniel Zhang and Alex Mego-Webb for their outstanding work.
Year 6 boys created Read Posters for Book Week. Using the website Canva, boys collaborated to make designs related to the theme or to reading. During this process boys learnt invaluable IT and layout skills. Winners of this challenge are still be decided.
Thanks to everyone who supported our Book Week events.

Cricket
Round 5 of the GPS Cricket season was always going to be a true test of our program’s strength as we took on the might of Nudgee College.
We couldn’t have asked for better conditions on the day with all matches being played in bright sunshine. In what turned out to be a very pleasing round of results, BGS Cricket recorded 17 wins out of the 27 fixtures played.
Our A level teams won five out of eight games respectively, with the entire Year 12 and Year 7 cohorts recording victories in their GPS matches.
Heading in to Round 6 of the season, we currently have our 5B, 7A, 7C, 8D, 8F, 9C & 11C teams remaining undefeated in the GPS competition as well as the 5A, 7D & 11B teams sitting as competition leaders of their divisions.
Team of the Week
It was great to see the First XI record a comprehensive victory over competition leaders Nudgee.
After losing the toss, our boys toiled hard in the field and were rewarded, picking up wickets at regular intervals.
Callum Vidler 3/11 (5) and Oli Spence 3/37 (8.3) were the pick of the bowlers combining with some excellent ground fielding and catching.
Our batters then dominated the Nudgee attack, pouncing on any short deliveries. Our opening partnership of 113 between Sam Wallwork (47) and Ollie Spence (67) was our best for the season and set up the innings perfectly.
Ethan DuPayne (37*) and Skipper Brad Mackintosh (17*) safely steered the team to victory with 7 overs to spare.
Hopefully our boys gained confidence from the match and can take this momentum into the remaining matches of the season.
Player of the Round
There were some excellent performances across the weekend’s fixtures and choosing a player of the round was challenging.
Jayden Ting (Third XI) continued his fine form with a well-deserved five wicket haul, while Ed Mullholland (8A), Will Driessen (10A), Andrew Bathgate (8E) and Francis Wallwork (7A) all put in great performances.
However, the standout performance for the round came from Oliver Spence (First XI) who finished with 67 (103) and 3/37 (8). Congratulations Oli!
Best of luck to all of our teams this weekend against Ipswich Grammar School.

Director of Cricket
Debating
Round 4 of GPS Debating has been the halfway mark for our Years 8-12 teams and the beginning for our Years 5-7 teams.
We were very glad to welcome our new teams and pleased to see such enthusiasm and commitment from all boys who participated.
A special congratulations to our Years 5 and 6 teams who all won their first round of debates.
We had a strong round at TSS with 13 wins and seven losses, and some of our Years 5, 6, 9, 10, and 12 teams remain undefeated this season.
We would like to thank our debating community and parents for their incredible support this year, and we look forward to the next few rounds with all our BGS teams continuing to improve and develop their skills week to week.

Faith Fellowship Camps
This year the annual Senior School Faith Fellowship Group (FFG) camp will be held at Somerset Dam during the second week of the upcoming Easter holidays (Tuesday 11 April to Friday 14 April).
The camp caters for students in Years 9 to 12. Middle School camps will be held during the first week of the September holidays, including both Moogerah residential and day camp options.
Further details for the Middle School camps will be provided closer to the time.
Senior School FFG is coordinated by Ms Noel Chan; Middle School FFG by Mr Ian Grice.
FFG provides a fun, positive and inclusive community in which students can explore deeper life questions in a non-denominational context.
Discussions are driven by student interest and include but are not limited to religious ideas. Students of any or no particular faith can take part in whichever age-appropriate activities they would like to, no matter their personal beliefs.
Forms with full details of the camp can be downloaded from the FFG activity tile on MyGrammar (Cocurricular Section).
This tile also contains the link to use to register students for the camp. An early-bird discount applies for registrations prior to 10 March 2023.
All registrations should occur by Friday 24 March, with further details and permissions procedures to be provided electronically during the last week of term.
Fencing
Fencing Sign-on
Sign on has closed for 2023. Thank you to those who have shown interest in Fencing this year.
The schedule for Training Squads and Term 2 training times will be on MyGrammar soon.
Whites Hire
Monday to Thursday, 6-9 March.
The information about whites hire and the order form is now available on MyGrammar.
Students should attend at their allocated time. One parent may accompany their student if necessary.
First IV Trials
Trials for the First IV will be held on 13-17 March with overflow into the following week if required.
More information is available on MyGrammar.
Those who wish to trial will get details about specific bout times soon. Not all students need to trial to participate in Fencing. Only students who nominate to trial are required to attend.
Musketeers Raffle Call for Donations
The Musketeers are currently looking for help in the form of raffle donations.
Fundraising is one of the key purposes of The Musketeers and crucial for maintaining the equipment-heavy sport of fencing, with new equipment being our major expense.
We are reaching out to BGS Fencing families to donate and/or source prizes for our 2023 raffle.
The prizes can range from smaller items that can be added to a larger 'basket' prize, to a more significant gift to be a major raffle prize.
Past donations have included electronics, gaming consoles (Xbox/Wii/PlayStation), gift vouchers, fencing gear, Dungeons and Dragons merchandise, even replica Medieval swords which proved extremely popular!
All funds raised from raffle ticket sales will make a huge difference to the continued success, safety and enjoyment of all the boys involved in BGS Fencing.
If you think this is something you are able to do to assist the fencing community, or if you have any questions please contact Noeleta Boardman or Damien Armenis at Musketeers.support@brisbanegrammar.com.
Other Important Dates
Fencing School Holiday Camp will be on 12-14 April in the Indoor Sports Centre.

Greening Grammar
Greening Grammar has had a busy start to the new year. From the money we raised through the Container for Change scheme we purchased more worm farms and live worms.
Every year the number of boarders committing to support Greening Grammar is rising and we had an enthusiastic team of worm farmers setting up the new farms on Friday after school.
The very reliable 2022 trio of Xavier Leung, Thierry Kwok and Isaac Chan will this year be supported by Enoch Chan, Binh Nguyen and Mark Humphreys.
Mark’s knowledge of worms and composting and his experience with worm farms made the assembly a smooth process.
Initially, the students wanted to greet every worm individually, but they soon realised that it is more time efficient to put 1000 worms into their new home in clumps.
It was certainly a fun and hands-on learning experience for the boys. We should be able to provide worm tea to the staff again soon. There are more Griffith House volunteers, and we are looking forward to their assistance.
A big thank you must go to the students who put on the gloves to separate the good from the bad.
The following boys gave up their time in the past three weeks and helped on two hot Thursday afternoons: Aiden Xiao, Dan Miller, Nicholas Love, Thor Loch-Wilkinson, Nhan Nguyen Ben and Alex Wong, Severin Yong Gee, Edward Gracey, Woo Jin Han, Mark Humphreys and Chris Coombe.
It is an ongoing process to educate the student body about the yellow bin and what to put in it. Food waste carelessly put into the yellow bin continues to cause the biggest problem.
Therefore, two Greening Grammar students who have been outstandingly active members of the group last year, Thor Loch-Wilkinson and Zachy Jap, took to the stage and addressed the Year 5 cohort and the whole Middle School on assembly last week.
Hopefully their enthusiastic presentation will encourage students to be more conscientious about where they dispose of their rubbish.
Music
Music training sets up children’s brains to make them better learners by enhancing both sound processing in the brain and cognition.
Kotsopoulou, A, and Hallam, S, The Perceived Impact of Playing Music While Studying: Age and Cultural Differences, 2010
After reviewing the list of top performing students in the BGS Class of 2022, it is no surprise that a significant percentage of these boys were involved in Music, either in the classroom or the performance program.
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to achieve your best. Get involved in Music!
Year 5 Music Immersion Launch
We would like to extend a special invitation to parents/guardians of all Year 5 students to attend the launch of the 2023 Music Immersion Program.
This will be held in The Lilley Centre on Friday 17 March from 5.30pm to 6.00pm
As you know, all Year 5 boys will soon receive confirmation of what their special instrument will be for 2023. They are very excited!
We want you as the most significant supporters of these young musicians to come and meet the staff who will be taking your sons on their musical journey.
There will be challenges along the way and so we want to give you some information about what to expect, what the boys will be asked to do and how you can help them.
Following this short presentation, you are invited to move to the Great Hall to enjoy some drinks and refreshments from 6.00pm at the Music Support Group Welcome Function and Music Soiree.
Music Soiree
Are you new to the BGS music community and keen to find out more about what will be on offer in 2023?
Would you like to share a drink and some conversation with friends while being entertained by our wonderful student musicians?
If this is the case, set aside Friday 17 March for our Music Soiree. This FREE event will be held in the Great Hall from 6.00pm to 7.15pm.
It will be very relaxed with the Great Hall in entertainment mode, allowing you to mingle with other members of the BGS Music Community.
Throughout the function there will be the opportunity to find out a little more about what is in store for 2023 while enjoying some excellent food and drinks.
There will also be several performances by some of our choirs, Chamber Strings and soloists.
So, whether you are new to the program or been involved for a while, the Soiree has plenty to offer!
Prior to this event, there will be a launch of the 2023 Year 5 Immersion Program so it will be a great chance to meet new people and to learn more about Music at BGS.
CLICK HERE to register for the Music Support Group Soiree. RSVP by no later than Tuesday 14 March.

Swimming
As you read this week’s newsletter, the 2023 GPS Swimming Championships will be well underway.
The team has prepared thoroughly and are expecting a very tight competition with the other schools. Good luck to all swimmers.
Last Friday saw the annual BGS Swimming ‘Grammar Only Night’ held at the Great Hall and the BGS Swimming Pool.
This event brings together the entire swimming community to celebrate the past, present and future of BGS Swimming.
This year, the entire 2022 GPS Championship winning team was inducted into the BGS Swimming Hall of Fame.
We congratulate this team on their outstanding achievements and contribution to BGS Swimming and thank them for sharing their experiences with this year’s GPS team.
It was also fantastic to see over 30 Old Boys participate in the student versus Old Boys races and relays during the event.

Blazer Submission for Award Embroidery
With Term 1 well underway, we thought it best to advise senior students of the schedule and process for submitting blazers for embroidery, as there have been some changes to prior years.
The final cut-off date for blazer submission before the winter uniform season is Friday 24 March 2023 (Week 9).
It is important for everyone to understand that there can be no exceptions to this date.
We are working very closely with Hi Profile, our embroiderer, to ensure they have enough time to complete all the submitted blazers to be ready in time for the winter uniform commencement.
YEAR 12 STUDENTS IN TERM 1 FLAGSHIP TEAMS: Your yellow Awards Forms will be handed out directly to you after the awards have been finalized during the week of 20 March 23. If you wish to get your blazer embroidered, please bring the form with your blazer to the Grammar Shop by Friday 24 March before school.
YEARS 10-12 (not in Term 1 flagship teams): If you have outstanding awards you wish to be embroidered, please go to the Cocurricular Office to have your Awards Form printed. Bring the form with your blazer to the Grammar Shop before shop closing at 11.00am. We ask that this is done sooner than later to avoid last minute rush, possibly missing the cut-off date.
YEAR 9: This is the first year you will be wearing blazers and most of you will still need to go to the Grammar Shop to purchase. If you have awards to be embroidered, please go to the Cocurricular Office to get your Awards Form printed and bring that with you when you come to the Grammar Shop to purchase your blazer. We ask that you start this process soon and not wait until the last week to avoid the rush and missing the cut-off date.
Our goal is to have all blazers back in the Grammar Shop before or, at the latest, by Wednesday 26 April 23.
