Headmaster | Anthony Micallef
I wish to inform the community that there are delays in the opening of the new STEAM Precinct. We had intended on opening the STEAM Precinct early in 2023, but global supply chain delays, shortage of trades and weather events have pushed the completion date out to September 2023. Once the building is completed there will be a complex certification process before we can legally and safely occupy the building.
We appreciate the patience showed by our community, and understand that this delay is particularly frustrating for our current Year 12 students. We will continue to resolve these issues as quickly as possible with our suppliers and building partners.
We will keep you informed of any developments and provide updates on the progress of the project as soon as we receive them. We assure you that we are doing everything we can to minimise the impact of the delays and ensure that the precinct is fully operational as soon as possible.
In the meantime, we advise all members of the school community to continue to exercise caution and follow safety protocols when moving around the construction zone.

Blazers in Term 2
It seems strange given the recent hot weather, however I need to remind families that the winter uniform for Senior School students will commence on Tuesday 2 May.
All Year 9-12 students are expected to wear a long sleeve white shirt and blazer from this date until the end of Term 3. If you have not commenced preparation for this, please make arrangements this week to ensure your son is correctly dressed on 2 May.
For Year 9 students, Tuesday 2 May is the first day that they will wear their winter uniform. It is an important ritual and one that we would like parents to be involved in. Mr Hopes will make contact shortly advising how you will be able to engage with your son on the first day he will wear a blazer to school. These are important rituals for the boys but equally important for parents as they journey through the highs and lows associated with adolescent development. I hope to see you at this event on 2 May.
Sleep Study
Early in Term 2, the School will conduct a survey collecting information about sleep quality. This will be the fourth Sleep study conducted at the school which provides useful information for form tutors to shape important conversations. As we get closer to the end of term, I want to remind you of the importance of maintaining good sleep routines for your son during the Easter break. This will greatly assist them re-create learning routines quickly when Term 2 commences on Tuesday 18 April.
Captain's Corner
Throughout this week, Brisbane Grammar School students have been coming together to celebrate Harmony Week, a time when we recognise and appreciate our diversity as Australians from different cultures.
At BGS, we believe our school values of inclusion are reflected in this year's theme: ”Everyone Belongs.”
We are fortunate to be part of such a diverse community, and it's important that we celebrate and embrace each other's differences.
Various activities were organised throughout the week to foster cross-cultural interactions and understanding.
Early in the week international board games were played, the Centenary Courtyard saw student-led performances, and a Staff Vs Student game of Buroinjin was held on the Oval during Friday lunchtime.
I truly think by bringing everyone together, we can become more respectful and globally aware citizens.
I would like to extend my personal thanks to all the students and staff involved in the Days of Significance Public Purpose committee, whose efforts made this week-long celebration a success. Your contributions have been greatly appreciated by the entire student body.
My hope is that this week has allowed us to embrace our diversity and recognize our shared humanity.

Boarding
A time of change.
When I describe this week as a time of mixed emotions, and as a bittersweet occasion, I trust that I convey the challenge we faced as a family of deciding to move on from a leading Boarding at Brisbane Grammar School, and all that we have achieved.
However, the end of Term 1, 2023, marks for me six and a half years as the Director of Boarding at Brisbane Grammar School, allied to over fifteen years in the privileged position of leading residential communities across the globe. I have worked in boarding schools since 1988 and truly don’t want to begin to total what one night a week on duty over that time, and various other responsibilities, might amount to.
Equally, I recognise it is the right time for me to change tact and I look forward to the personal and professional growth that my new role at Churchie will undoubtedly offer.
When I commenced my journey as a Housemaster at Dean Close School in early 2008, I was offered to attend a training weekend at Bryanston School, in Dorset. I well remember the title of the training course; ‘Boarding – the most rewarding yet masochistic career imaginable’.
After all this time I still concur with that title, especially in that it is truly rewarding. Boarding is hard, can require sacrifice and does involve placing other peoples needs, especially the boarders, before your own. That said, there isn’t one thing I would have changed, and I shall cherish the memories and friendships formed with boarders and their families over the years.
I depart knowing that Boarding is in safe hands. Mr Fulton in Harlin House and Mr Power in Griffith House are committed professionals who dedicate themselves to the care of the boys in their charge. Their focus will not change in these coming weeks and even though change challenges all of us, I hope the ongoing care and commitment of those who lead each house will reassure the young men who are part of this special community.
Key Dates
As we reach the end of week 9, I want to take this final opportunity to remind all families of the arrangements for the upcoming Easter vacation.
Classes will end on Friday 31 March at 3:10pm. With various assessments scheduled at the end of term, Boarding will remain open, if required, until 12:30 pm on Saturday 1 April.
Parents wishing to arrange travel for their son on the Saturday are asked to provide end of term travel details by the close of the weekend at the very latest.
Travel to Brisbane Airport on Friday and Saturday will be provided, or enabled, by Boarding, wherever possible.
Boarding will re-open for students on Monday 17 April at 12:30pm. Should your son return before that time please email Mr Fulton prior to the end of term so that we can explore what arrangements can be made.
Classes will commence on Tuesday 18 April at 8:20am.

Outdoor Education
8G experienced the extremes at Moogerah this week, during their expedition and the final day of activities. The temperature had an impact on the program as the levels came close to activity thresholds. The class spent extra time swimming in Lake Moogerah and started activities earlier to avoid the worst of the heat. Wednesday evening brought a severe weather forecast. The class were camping out at Bitenbar when the warning came through, so they finished eating dinner, repacked gear and started the transfer back to Pepperina Hill in the rain. The class were supportive, organized and helpful when they were waiting in the rain for their transport shuttle and stayed positive to make the most out of the situation.
Frederick Vaughan was a strong role model for his peers. Frederick was fully engaged in the program and ready to learn everything he could about the outdoor environment.
Elliot Heath was an excellent supporter for his peers. He demonstrated the behavioural objectives of the program theme focused on community.
Aum Bhatt stayed positive and kept morale high while waiting in the wet and dark for the transport back to the centre. Aum proved to be an excellent communicator and provided great support to his classmates during activities, showing some real leadership potential.
Campbell O'Reilly applied himself to every task, he shared his thoughts and ideas with the group and was a positive influence on his classmates. Campbell consistently demonstrated initiative and looked for opportunities to help both staff and students.
Year 11 students Sam Long and Toby Harpham were committed to their role as Outdoor Education Leaders. Sam and Toby developed connections with the year 8 students and guided them through their experience. They provided direction to the class through the weather situation and worked hard during every activity and duty task.
Form Tutors Mr Simon Canfield and Ms Liisa Miner both joined the class during the week. Mr Canfield and Ms Miner helped the boys manage the challenging conditions and will be able to draw on the shared experience the class had together.
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 8G Video link.
Please note: Outdoor Education photos are now available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. You can then view the photos by clicking on the Outdoor Education Year 5 or Year 8 folder in Pixevety.

Harmony Week
To close our Harmony Week celebrations today, the Student Reconciliation Action group organised a friendly staff vs. students game of Buroinjin at Break 2. Buroinjin was a ball game played by the Kabi Kabi people of southern Queensland. We are so incredibly lucky to a culturally diverse community at Brisbane Grammar where everyone belongs.

Sports and Activities
With the GPS Bye scheduled for the last weekend of term following the Round against BSHS, some of our younger teams have had an unusual finish to their volleyball and cricket seasons. Despite this, the Junior Cricket breakup at Northgate last weekend was very well attended and congratulations to all of the boys who spoke on behalf of their teams. Thank you also to the parents for their amazing food contributions.
This weekend will see the culminating events for the volleyball and senior cricket programs. We look forward to acknowledging the efforts of our players and coaches.
Cross country is underway for the 2023 season with the boys competing at Nudgee College in the sweltering heat last Friday afternoon. Race officials shortened the distance and provided more water stations in response to the forecast temperatures and the boys acquitted themselves very well. A smaller field of runners is expected at Toowoomba this afternoon and I acknowledge the effort of those boys who were prepared top make the journey to compete.
Trials for fencing, football and tennis teams are ongoing and any boys wishing to be a part of these programs should have been in contact with the leader of their respective programs by now. Opportunities exist in the holiday period to further develop skills in camps and clinics. Please check MyGrammar for details and be mindful of cut-off dates for registration.
The Interwing Track and Field Carnival will be held at Northgate next Friday. A second letter with more detailed information will be emailed to all families this weekend. I encourage you to read this carefully as there are some important messages within.

Cocurricular Term 1
With the bye in week 9 of the term, our Term 1 Sport and activities have concluded their GPS competition for 2023. While our cricketers, volleyballers and debaters may not have had the season they set out for themselves at the beginning, each program finished their respective competitions strongly.
This weekend sees end of season functions for both Volleyball and Cricket on Saturday. These functions provide an opportunity to celebrate individual and team performance and reflect on the hard work and efforts from all the community in running their programs within an educational context. It is also the opportunity for the school to acknowledge and thank the tireless efforts from our program leaders and key staff whose dedication and professionalism has provided the perfect learning environment for our boys to grow as student athletes.
On behalf of the school, we would like to thank all teaching staff, lead coaches and volunteers who have helped our students to experience success. To our program leaders, Mr Trevor Irvine (Cricket), Mr Rhys Cox (Volleyball) and Mrs Dana Schottlaender (Debating) we share our sincere thanks.
As part of our commitment to continual improvement, the school will again seek feedback at the end of each term from those who have been involved in our seasons. Students, coaching staff and parents will all have the opportunity to provide valuable insight into their experiences within our programs. This feedback will be collated and deidentified with summaries and consistent themes forming the basis of our formal review process for all our programs. We consider this feedback vital to our program improvement and ask that each of our stakeholders take the time to share their reflections on the season through this upcoming process.
Community stakeholders will receive a survey through email which will remain open till the end of the term break and I encourage all to respond constructively and thoughtful so that we can build on our programs for 2023.

Round 8 vs BSHS
With the bye round scheduled for Round 9, our Round 8 clash against Brisbane State High School was our last for the season. Wanting to finish the season positively, our boys trained hard during the week and the results showed on the day. Our BGS program had an extremely successful day winning 18 out of the 26 matches played and 11 out of 15 GPS matches. Well done to the Year 12, 9, 8 and 5 teams who won all their matches respectively. In what continues to be a remarkable season with the ball, Round 8 produced two more 5 wicket hauls and another hattrick taking the season tally to eight 5 wicket hauls and 5 hattricks. With all games for BGS completed for the 2023 GPS season I am pleased to report that the 5B, 7C, 8D, 8E, 8F, 9C, 9D and 11C teams all finished the season as undefeated competition leaders. We also currently have our 7A, 7D, 9E and 11B teams finishing the GPS competition as competition leaders. We also have a further 13 teams finishing the season in the top 3 positions which takes our total percentage of teams finishing in the top 3 positions to nearly 71%. Congratulations to all cricketers on a fantastic season!

Team of the Week
BGS 2nd XI 8/153 def BSHS 2nd XI 8/113
In their last ever match for BGS, our 2nd XI team ensured it would be a memorable one. Winning the toss and electing to bat, our innings didn’t get off to the best start with the top order failing to take advantage of a good batting wicket. At 5/38 we were in trouble. Thankfully our middle order stood tall and with two excellent partnerships, we managed to post a respectable 153. Ethan and Jack Love were the main contributors with 32* and 30 runs respectively. Our opening bowlers then ensured BSHS were going to struggle with the chase, taking 4 early wickets with the score at just 18. Morgan Jury and Oliver Buck picked up 5 wickets between them for just 21 runs off 14 overs. Further economical bowling restricted BSHS to 102 runs with 1 over remaining. The captain then handed the ball to Ragulan Gnanavel to bowl the final over of the season. The first five balls weren’t his greatest. Then – to the slow clap of all onlookers – he ran in to bowl the final ball – and clean bowled their batsman. Much to the jubilation of his teammates and the large crowd. Congratulations Ragulan and well done boys!
Player of the Round
The Round 8 Player of the Round was a tough decision with some excellent performances to finish the season. Candidates included Charlie Miller who secured our 5th hattrick of the season for the 9C team. He finished with 3/0 off two overs. Harrison McDonald (7B) took a devil’s hattrick snaring three wickets in four balls. Alex Peters (11B) flexed his batting muscles scoring 63 runs for his team and Armaan Timblo led the 9As to victory with 59*. However, Hayden Scholes (10B) was the standout performer for the Round with excellent figures of 5/16 off six overs. That performance is our 8th 5-wicket haul for the season. Truly amazing!

QFA Intro to Fencing Competition on 18 March in Yeronga
Last Saturday, QFA held an event to orient new fencers to the format of the Brisbane Schools Teams Competition. 11 of our fencers chose to attend this event. They were given a walkthrough of all aspects of the equipment required to compete in QFA run events, how to wear and use equipment, the competition structure, poule fencing, using the electronic scoring boxes, explanation of refereeing calls, and match scoring. Special thanks to Mr Hill who organised the gear for the day.

Musketeers raffle - call for donations
The Musketeers are currently looking for help in the form of raffle donations.
Fundraising is one of the key purposes of The Musketeers and crucial for maintaining the equipment-heavy sport of fencing, with new equipment being our major expense.
We are reaching out to BGS Fencing families to donate and/or source prizes for our 2023 raffle.
The prizes can range from smaller items that can be added to a larger 'basket' prize, to a more significant gift to be a major raffle prize.
Past donations have included electronics, gaming consoles (Xbox/Wii/PlayStation), gift vouchers, fencing gear, Dungeons and Dragons merchandise, even replica Medieval swords which proved extremely popular!
All funds raised from raffle ticket sales will make a huge difference to the continued success, safety and enjoyment of all the boys involved in BGS Fencing.
If you think this is something you are able to do to assist the fencing community, or if you have any questions please email Noeleta Boardman or Damien Armenis.

AN EXPERIMENT WITH: THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE
2023 Senior Dramatic Production
A group of students have seen a stage production of Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle. They deconstruct, re-enact and critique it. Why should a post-World War 2-communist play matter to a post-covid-gen z audience? The answer is simple: we must still actively choose what is right and what is wrong. But will they? Will we? Will you?
Adapted from Brecht by Marcel Dorney, An Experiment with The Caucasian Chalk Circle challenges audiences to question their own morals throughout this satirical play, within a play, within a play.
It's Brecht, but for the here and now.

Important Reminder for Year 9 Winter Uniform Purchase
As we are now in Week 8, please ensure your son has purchased his blazer and white shirts before the end of the term.
If your son is planning to purchase the blazer on his own using his Student ID Card, please top up your son’s ID card and take any daily limits off prior to them coming to the shop.
The blazers are priced at $315 for sizes 32–44 and $325 for sizes 46–52. The white shirts are priced at $30.
Year 9 students who wish to have awards embroidered will need to go to the Cocurricular Office to get the Awards Form printed and bring it to the Grammar Shop at the time of blazer purchase.
Payment and Grammar Shop Online Orders
Grammar Shop purchases can be made in-store and online using Visa, Mastercard or the BGS Card account, which can be accessed (MyGrammar > BGS Card).
The online store can be accessed by entering the BGS Card system and then clicking the ‘Grammar Shop Online’ link at the top of the screen. Please allow a minimum of 24 hours before coming to the shop to collect your order.
A significant number of students are still coming to the Grammar Shop without sufficient funds on their BGS Card. Please ensure funds are available for students before they come to make purchases. If you have selected a 'daily limit' for the BGS Card account, this will need to be removed prior to the student making the purchase.
Uncollected Online Orders Policy
In the event items are not collected within three months of the on-line purchase date, the shop will refund the value of the items to the student's BGS Card and items returned to shop stock.
Pre-loved Uniforms For Sale
The Grammar Shop has a good selection of pre-loved uniforms, for example, Middle School shorts and shirts, senior blue shirts, trousers, PE polo shirts, jumpers and blazers. Parents are encouraged to browse our pre-loved section in the shop.
Blazer Submission for Award Embroidery
With Term 1 well underway, we thought it best to advise senior students of the schedule and process for submitting blazers for embroidery, as there have been some changes to prior years.
The final cut-off date for blazer submission before the winter uniform season is Friday 24 March 2023 (Week 9).
It is important for everyone to understand that there can be no exceptions to this date.
We are working very closely with Hi Profile, our embroiderer, to ensure they have enough time to complete all the submitted blazers to be ready in time for the winter uniform commencement.
YEAR 12 STUDENTS IN TERM 1 FLAGSHIP TEAMS: Your yellow Awards Forms will be handed out directly to you after the awards have been finalized during the week of 20 March 23. If you wish to get your blazer embroidered, please bring the form with your blazer to the Grammar Shop by Friday 24 March before school.
YEARS 10-12 (not in Term 1 flagship teams): If you have outstanding awards you wish to be embroidered, please go to the Cocurricular Office to have your Awards Form printed. Bring the form with your blazer to the Grammar Shop before shop closing at 11.00am. We ask that this is done sooner than later to avoid last minute rush, possibly missing the cut-off date.
YEAR 9: This is the first year you will be wearing blazers and most of you will still need to go to the Grammar Shop to purchase. If you have awards to be embroidered, please go to the Cocurricular Office to get your Awards Form printed and bring that with you when you come to the Grammar Shop to purchase your blazer. We ask that you start this process soon and not wait until the last week to avoid the rush and missing the cut-off date.
Our goal is to have all blazers back in the Grammar Shop before or, at the latest, by Wednesday 26 April 23.
Returned Embroidery
Please go to MyGrammar | P&F Auxiliary | Embroidered Blazer/Item Pick up list to check whether your blazer or other embroidered items are ready to be picked up. We appreciate you collecting these items as soon as possible. Click HERE to see the list.
