Lead Article
Jacqui Zervos | Executive Director Educational Innovation
Excitement is mounting about the approaching opening of the STEAM precinct - making it a great time to take a look at the ‘behind the scenes work’ of our academic leaders and teachers as they prepare for the transition.
Our efforts in this curricular space have been highly intentional, thorough and are progressing well in advance of the physical opening of the precinct. We recognised early in the concept and design phase that simply erecting a magnificent building wouldn’t automatically lead to the modes of teaching and learning that encompass STEAM. We were acutely aware of the dangers of an ‘If you build it, they will come’-attitude; after all, a physical structure, no matter how fantastic, wouldn’t guarantee the desired change in teaching and learning. Professional learning support needed to be carefully planned and delivered if we were to maximise the opportunities STEAM embodies.
We shouldn’t think of STEAM as a just building and or just curriculum. It is a holistic approach, a new way of thinking and working. The design of learning in STEAM encourages students to normalise taking carefully considered risks, engaging in experiential learning, persisting through problem-solving, embracing collaboration to generate and share thinking, and applying the creative process. These are the learning skills and dispositions that will create the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the future; and they are the design elements that sit at the heart of our Effective Thinking Cultures approach to teaching and learning, which has been the focus across departments in recent years. We have the opportunity now, through STEAM, to open the doors to the real world and bring tangible applications of these approaches from the external context into our BGS classrooms.
To fully prepare teachers of Science, Design, Art and Maths for their transition into STEAM we embarked on an intensive and highly collaborative professional learning journey. Teachers have been taken out of their comfort zones and asked to work collaboratively to consider what new affordances for learning will be offered in the STEAM precinct and consider how educational strategies can be changed and be delivered most effectively.
The Heads of Department from Maths, Science, Design and Art meet fortnightly with the Principal Project Officer of STEAM to co-develop the shared vision for BGS STEAM learning, and strategically plan professional learning activities for their department teams to build understanding and skill. When required these professional learning sessions are conducted within faculties; at other times they are held in cross-disciplinary groupings. Teachers have been allocated fortnightly sessions in their timetable to engage in this collaborative learning process. A strong focus has been on teachers experimenting in their current classrooms, engaging in observations of others’ teaching and dedicating time for discussion to share these experiences. This cross-pollination of ideas and practices is critical to the enactment of STEAM and is resulting in a wonderfully rich and focused professional culture within and across these departments. For further support and provocation, a wide range of internal and external resources (from experts) has been curated for teachers, including videoed examples of STEAM practice classrooms. Importantly, and running in conjunction with all of the above, there has been an explicit focus on leadership for our departmental heads, enhancing their skills to adapt their teams' practices to the new precinct. Their enthusiasm at embracing these challenges has been nothing short of inspirational.
This intensive professional learning program aims to ensure a seamless transition once the STEAM precinct opens. It will leave our teachers knowledgeable, skilled and ready to launch into the exciting and inspiring world of STEAM learning, delivering on our commitment to an authentic STEAM experience that will have our boys future-ready and prepared to take on the world.
STEAM Innovation Summit
Tanya Neilsen | Principal Project Officer – STEAM and Related Learning.
This week we launched a three-day Innovation Summit for Year 8 students, a STEAM initiative that provided students with an opportunity to explore immersive programs through a design thinking lens. With nine programs on offer - including Engineering, DJ Music, Game Design, Impact Lab (Fashion Studio), Co2 Dragster, SES Drones, Theatre Maker, Robotics and Sports Science - students had the chance to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills while exploring their personal interests.
Students paused their regular academic schedule to embrace a design thinking approach to produce practical and creative solutions to real-world problems, thus making them better innovators, collaborators, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. During the Summit, students worked in teams to solve complex problems and were encouraged to exchange ideas and build on one another's strengths. By working collaboratively, students developed their communication skills practised relating to their peers, making them better team players. Additionally, by working together, students brought different perspectives, background knowledge and skills that helped to enrich their learning experiences.
The Summit was a huge success, and we are proud to have provided our students with an engaging and inspiring learning opportunity. A special thank you to the BGS Professional Learning Community, who conceptualised, researched, devised and facilitated these amazing programs for the boys.

ANZAC Day
Chris Price | School Historian and Archivist
The annual Anzac Day commemoration was held at a special assembly for the whole school on Monday this week.
School leaders Seb Roy-Bryant, Brad Mackintosh and Doug Chapman conducted the order of service and our school captain, Ronan Mellick, delivered the main address. Original letters and speeches were read by Atti Kath (Year 7), Thomas Scott (Year 8) and Max Gao (Year 9). Oliver Waterhouse (Year 12) played the last post and rouse on the school bugle. The focus of the assembly was the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the War Memorial Library and the importance for our community to remember the service of our old boys.
Seb read the prayer delivered by Chaplain Major J E N Osborn in 1923. John Osborn was a student at Grammar from 1896 to 1900 and served on the western front. His words told us much about the impact of the war on Australian soldiers and their families. Atti then read a letter from Neil MacGregor (BGS 1900-1904) who enlisted in 1914. It showed the sense of duty and responsibility he felt to sign up and serve his country, hoping his parents would be proud of his decision. Thomas read a letter from Frederick Boddington (BGS 1902-1904), making light of a terrible injury he suffered at Gallipoli, reassuring his parents he was well. Both these old boys were later killed in action. Max then read from a speech by then-headmaster, Mr Bousfield, which explained why it was important for the school to make a commitment to remember their fallen old boys' actions.
The assembly concluded with Headmaster reminding us of our continuing commitment to remembrance, referring to the ongoing upgrades to the post-WWII service honour board in the Great Hall. We thank all our students for their contributions to this special assembly. We also acknowledge the wonderful contribution of our Marching Band to the annual Anzac Day parade held in the city and thank Mr Cribb and Mr Noble for their efforts in organising.

Outdoor Education
Mat Fairley | Assistant Director Outdoor Education
8J started off Term 2 at Moogerah, as the final Year 8 class for 2023. This year, the Year 8 camps focused on community building, by creating situations that allowed the student to develop their teamwork and communication skills, supporting each other and persisting through a variety of challenges. 8J took on the challenges of the week with gusto and seemed to really embrace the story of the Goanna, a tale highlighting that all members of a community / class are essential to the overall success of the group. Students became more aware of their classmates' needs and how they could assist others as we progressed through the expedition component of the week. This became particularly evident on Thursday, when the group completed their hike, paddle and clean-up, making excellent time.
Mitchell Spencer was acknowledged by the group as being a good problem solver whilst trying to put up the tents, bringing lots of ideas to the group.
Dinura Gallage was recognized as always showing high levels of determination, even during his most challenging moments.
Edward Mulholland brought great energy to the group during the week helping others with ideas and motivation.
Mrs Sara Bell enjoyed spending time with the class in this different environment and commented how they developed as a group during the week. Hopefully, the students will take these new and improved skills into the classroom and continue support and understand one another.
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 8J video link.
Outdoor Education photos are now available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. Online Parent Information Presentation | Sleep for Better Health, Resilience and Performance
Lisa Maltman from 'The Sleep Connection' will be presenting an online information session - “Sleep for Better Health, Resilience and Performance" - on Thursday, 11 May 2023 from 7pm to 8pm.
Lisa is passionate about healthy sleep and concerned about the fact that over 30% of primary school children and 70% of teenagers are sleep deprived. This is having significant effects on many areas of their lives such as learning and academic performance, along with their emotional and mental health.
'The Sleep Connection' was established by Lisa to meet the growing need to educate students, teachers and parents in schools on the importance of sleep health. She collaborates with key Australian adolescent sleep specialists and psychologists from the Woolcock Medical Institute in Sydney which is world-renowned in the area of sleep research.
The aim of the presentation is to create awareness of the current level of sleep deprivation among students and how it affects all aspects of their lives. Parents will be empowered with knowledge, practical strategies and tools to make informed decisions regarding sleep health and pathways to treatment for those who require professional help.

Middle School
Head of Middle School | Rebecca Campbell
This week, our Year 8 students participated in the Innovation Summit. Choosing from nine different electives, students were guided through the design thinking process to develop an innovative solution to a set provocation. As I visited each program across the three days, I was delighted to see high levels of engagement and robust collaboration as students wrestled with challenging ideas and learnt new skills. I wish to thank all staff who spent countless hours designing and facilitating the Innovation Summit Programs, and Tanya Neilsen for her leadership and mentorship. We very much look forward to hosting the Innovation Summit in the new STEAM building in 2024.
Many of our talented musicians also performed at this week’s Band and Percussion concert. It is always a joy to see so many Middle School students participating in our Music Program. Balancing academic learning with an active engagement in cocurricular pursuits is a hallmark feature of a BGS education.
If you have any questions about the cocurricular program or if your son is still unsure of his options, please visit the Cocurricular page on MyGrammar or contact our Assistant Head of Middle School – Sport and Activities, Mr Glenn McFarlane.
Library
Library on the Lawn
Year 5 students participated in a fun literary event on Wednesday - Library on the Lawn. Although inclement weather required a change of venue to the MS Amphitheatre, the students' excitement was unaffected. Guest author Richard Newsome entertained the boys by creating a story on the go with much hilarious audience input. In addition the boys shared favourite books with friends, completed a trivia challenge and, most importantly, came dressed as their favourite fictional character. There were drinks and cupcakes on offer to round out the event. Teachers joined in the fun and came as a variety of Harry Potter characters, much to the delight of the boys. Thanks go to the Library staff and the Year 5 teachers for their support.
Middle School Sports and Activities
After a busy holiday period with clinics for football, fencing and tennis, our boys were well prepared for the season opening round against BBC. As the tables below suggest, it was an outstanding weekend of results for our Middle School football and tennis teams.
This weekend we are away against Churchie and once again we have supplementary matches at other venues. Please check Mygrammar for team lists, times, and venues.
I mentioned to the boys on Assembly last Friday about the uniform requirements for Saturday fixtures for Middle School boys. Players may arrive and depart the venue in their playing gear as long as they wear shoes and are not staying on to watch other games. This was well done last weekend and I ask all families to continue to assist us with presenting ourselves appropriately.
Cross country returns to Victoria Park this week with the BGS and GT combined meet. After running this event at Northgate in recent years, we have traded that flat and fast course for the challenging and hilly Victoria Park course. The letter more accurately reflects the demands of Limestone Park where the Championships will be held on May 18.

The 2023 football season kicked off last Saturday with an away-game to BBC.
The early results were very positive, which set the tune for the day. Following a wonderful pre-season, including the First XI victory during the TSS tournament, our boys put in a tenacious effort against a physical BBC side. Led by captain Andrew McLeod, the boys managed to wrestle control from their opponents. Vincent Van Brunschot (Year 10) opened the scoring midway through the first half, increasing our teams confidence. The second half saw a further two goals by Ollie Larsen and Andrew McLeod.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make our day such a success; including the large BGS crowd, who turned Miskin Street into a sea of blue. We finished our encounter with BBC with 22 wins, 5 losses and 3 draws - a good old fashioned drubbing!! Special shout out to the 5-9A teams for getting off to winning starts. Notable others were 10C winning 15-0, 8C winning 16-0, and also 9E who beat Nudgee College's 9D 5-2.
Let's build on this momentum at training across the week as we prepare for Round 2 of away-games at ACGS.

A significant number of students are still coming to the Grammar Shop without sufficient funds on their BGS Card. Please ensure funds are available for students before they come to make purchases. If you have selected a 'daily limit' for the BGS Card account, this will need to be removed prior to the student making the purchase.
Uncollected Online Orders Policy
In the event that items are not collected within 3 months of their online purchase date, the items will be returned to the warehouse. The value of the uncollected purchases will be transferred to the student's BGS Card .
Pre-Loved Uniforms for Sale (Including Blazers)

Parents are encouraged to browse our pre-loved section. If you have clean, quality used uniforms you’d like to donate, please drop them at the Grammar Shop. We appreciate your kind donations.

OPEN DAY CURRY STALL
The BGS Open Day is to be held on Saturday 6 May and, as in previous years, we ask that families from Years 5 and 6 kindly assist the P&F Auxiliary by providing ingredients for our popular Curry Stall.
Donated items allow the P&F Auxiliary to directly return proceeds to the Middle School for the benefit of the students.
This year, we are requesting:
· Year 5 students - tinned tomatoes (diced or whole)
· Year 6 students - bags of Jasmine Rice
It would be appreciated if the students could drop off their donation at the Middle School Reception before Thursday 4 May. We thank you in anticipation of your kind donation.
