Bullying is by no means a new phenomenon; however, this is no excuse to take a laissez-faire approach. Living in the age of social media and ever-present virtual connections means opportunities for bullying are rife, whether at school, work, online or at home. Addressing issues around bullying in an effective-yet-constructive fashion is a challenge most educators will face. BGS’ Student Wellbeing Team are rising to the challenge, enlisting external experts and putting their recommendations into action to create a school culture that leaves no room for undesirable behaviours.
The School is currently undertaking a series of Cultural Projects, which work in conjunction to create a culture that allows students to feel safe, secure and connected. We are committed to creating an environment in which bullying, disrespectful behavior, racism, sexual prejudice, and sexism are non-normative and discouraged; and the BGS Cultural Projects are designed to help the school achieve these goals. Each Cultural Project constitutes an in-depth exploration, including audits of current strategies by external experts and implementing their recommendations for improvement. By gaining a thorough understanding of all contributing factors and the most progressive solutions to any issues that may arise, the Student Wellbeing Team is able to provide BGS students with the highest levels of care and support.
Modelling positive behaviours is a responsibility all BGS educators – classroom teachers, form tutors and sport coaches - take incredibly seriously. Leading by example not only inspires our students to live up to the school’s cultural expectations, it also fosters an environment of trust and mutual respect.
I look forward to sharing more in this space, including progress on these projects and outcomes over the next two Terms.

One of the enjoyable tasks I have engaged in over the last couple of years is coaching a junior cricket team at Valleys District Cricket Club. I love cricket as a sport for many reasons. One of those reasons is the importance that statistics play in understanding the game and how they can be used to help develop the players in the team. Our scorer should be part of the National Test Team, such is his ability in this area.
Over recent weeks in the wellbeing area, BGS has been collecting data from a range of sources to assist wellbeing staff to better understand the state of play with regard our students. In years 7,9 and 11 we have collected data from parents to understand from their perspective how their son is progressing. The return rate was incredible, and I will ensure an infographic is sent to parents of each year level involved. Last week, boys engaged in the fourth whole school sleep study since 2016. The data allows for identification of overall trends as well as access to a comparative individual model to align with age growth.
This week boys engaged in our most significant statistical collection that underpins our Student Wellbeing audit. This is a yearly process based on student voice in the areas of bullying and mental health. Data is managed by Dr Simmons and his team who use the data to provide a summary as well as individual data for the Student Wellbeing Team to use in their conversations with students. This year, a third focus will be added to the Student Wellbeing Audit; Emotional Intelligence. Dr Simmons will work with staff from Swinburne University to implement this as an ongoing measure to add to our ability to understand what can be done to best assist our students.
Much like coaching cricket the collected data is used to inform conversations with staff and students. Diagnosing a cricketer’s progress cannot be done by looking at data on its own. It can only be done if the data collected is of high quality and is used as a piece of the process aimed towards improving outcomes for the boys. The same is the case with the data collected by the Wellbeing Team so far during Term 2.
Outdoor Education
The Year 9 Outdoor Education program continued this week with 9B. The program focuses on Leading Self and encourages students to take more ownership of their actions and outcomes.
The boys spent two nights at Bitenbar and completed a student-led journey to one of the most impressive mountains in the Scenic Rim, Mt Greville. Whilst at Moogerah they also took part in a single kayak paddle, and tried their hand at high ropes and climbing on our artificial wall.
Special Mentions:
Jacob Blanch used his navigation and bush skills to help the group during the expedition.
Archie Dunstan showed excellent balance and fearlessly took on the highest level challenge on the high ropes.
---
We also had 7E completing their OE experience for this year with energy and enthusiasm. One of the highlights of the week was hearing the class encourage each other on the climbing and abseil. Ms Emmerson role modelled the Endeavor theme of the week by completing the climb / abseil and the senior pole jump.
The memorable moment for some of the Year 7 boys was their canoe filling up with water during their paddle back from Mt Edwards.
Special Mentions:
Hudson Prasad showed high levels of energy and put this to good use bailing out the aforementioned canoe, successfully keeping it afloat under rather rough conditions.
Luka Rodins was in his element in the bush, always willing to get involved and help other students in his class.
Year 11 Outdoor Education Leaders Manoli Samios, Thomas Stannard, Ben Treacy, William Ewart, Seb Kimbell and Jashinraj Premraj focused on supporting their respective classes, offering guidance and assistance at every opportunity.
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 9B Video, 7E Video link.
Outdoor Education photos are now available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. You can then view the photos by clicking on the Outdoor Education Year 9 folder in Pixevety.
Public Purpose
Eat Up - Term 2!
Eat Up Australia strives to feed the 1-in-5 Australian students experiencing hunger and has long been a favourite with BGS’ Public Purpose Club. This term’s Eat Up event – hosted 23rd May – was booked out in seconds. 70 students, parents and staff got together to make an astonishing 1035 sandwiches in just 30 minutes, all of which were delivered to schools in Brisbane’s south and the Logan area. A big well done and even bigger thank you to all our volunteers!
Eat Up will be back!
· Term 3 Eat Up: BGS Tuesday the 25th July 3:30 – 4:30pm
· Term 4 Eat Up: BGS Tuesday 10th October 3:30 – 4:30 pm
It is time to once more get moving for the Push Up Challenge!
This annual fundraiser aims to create awareness and much-needed support for a variety of charities aligned with mental health. This year we've set ourselves a grueling challenge indeed: Participants are expected to do 3144 push ups in 23 days (or a part thereof), between June 1 and June 23. We hold push up stations at school throughout that time to support boys doing their part.
Last year, we had over 700 students and members of the School community signed up and involved. We raised over $11,000, setting a pretty high bar - and this year we want to try and beat it!

Year 12 | QTAC Matters
This week I had the pleasure of talking with the Year 12 cohort about the QTAC application process and how they might best position themselves to obtain a favourable outcome.
Some key points to consider for our Year 12 cohort were that:
-
Students are responsible for their application; we do not apply on their behalf
-
Students are responsible for their on-time application and payment
-
Students should use their six preferences to maximise their chances of receiving an offer
-
Students should continue to attend the small group workshops and career masterclasses on offer
The next step in our support plan for Year 12 students is the QTAC Information Evening on the 26th of July. Further login details and information will be provided to the Year 12 parent community closer to the time. This event is very relevant for Year 12 students and families as we seek to provide an optimal experience for our tertiary applicants.
Year 12 | Careers Masterclasses and Small Group Workshops
Our next Year 12 Careers Masterclass will take place Thursday 1st June in the Forum, the topic being Engineering and Information Technology Degrees.
Small group workshops continue to be provided each week and students may sign up to these using links on the Student Services Teams channel or via the BeyondGrammar.com.au site.
Parents and students should note that it is the responsibility of Year 12 students to attend small group workshops and/ or the masterclasses on offer.

ICAS Assessment 2023
ICAS Assessments are independent online assessments designed to recognise and reward academic excellence. The assessments are based on the curricula for the relevant year. Students are asked to demonstrate a deeper, integrated, and thorough level of learning.
Next week, boys will be invited to nominate to do assessments in English, Mathematics and Science. Middle School boys (Years 5 to 8) will be contacted by Ms Carr and boys in Years 9 to 12 will be contacted by Mr Atkins. Numbers are limited so nominations will not guarantee participation; however, we will endeavour to accommodate all interested students. The competitions will be conducted after school. Boys who participate will need to bring their tablet on the day as the assessment will be done online.

Congratulations to all Middle School students who competed in last week’s Cross Country Championship at Limestone Park! Our junior students were fierce competitors, tying for third place with BBC. Our cross country runners demonstrated great commitment, sportsmanship and tenacity throughout the season.
This week, the da Vinci Decathlon, an academic competition in which teams compete across ten disciplines, was held at St Joseph’s Nudgee College. After completing all challenges set before them, our team: Leo Armenis (6D), Oliver Chin Moody (6D), William French (6C), Edward Gu (6B), Lachlan Hilford (6C), Aiden Lee (6A), Marcus Swan (6B) and Jack Swayne (6A) achieved 2nd Place overall, a laudable achievement! The team collaborated successfully throughout the day, scoring consistently across the ten categories to produce this excellent result. Congratulations boys!
On Wednesday, we welcomed over 100 grandparents to BGS to celebrate Grandparents’ Day. Our Year 6 boys were gracious hosts as they shared morning tea and enjoyed a concert with their special guests. Events such as Grandparents’ Day highlight our core value of Community and we are grateful to those who attended as well as parents who assisted on the day. Special thanks to our BGS staff who contributed to Grandparents’ Day.

Rubik’s Race Challenge
Competition was fierce in the second annual Rubik’s Race Challenge on Wednesday. Organised by Year 6 student Leo Koch, the boys participated in time trials via an app to determine who would face off in the semi-finals, which were played using the game boards. The winner of the final was Herrick Zhou and the runner-up was Ryan Lee. Special thanks to Leo who drew admirably on his leadership skills to organise, promote and run the event.
Dramatic Production
We are beyond thrilled to announce the launch of this year’s Middle School Musical, a production of Disney’s award-winning Newsies Jr. !
Set in New York during 1899, a ragtag team of newsboys are making a meagre living selling newspapers on the city streets. But when the prices of “papes” are hiked and the newsies are hung out to dry, there is nothing left to do but “open the gates and seize the day!”
Auditions will take place in the final weeks of Term 2. All Year 5-8 students are invited to audition – information can be found inside the comprehensive audition packs available in Year Level Teams, or at the following link: https://linktr.ee/grammarplay.bgs

Middle School Sports and Activities
Our Term 2 sporting teams continue to be very competitive with a great round of football and tennis fixtures against Nudgee College last weekend.
It is a very busy time of the year with Term 2 sports in full competition mode and Term 3 sports basketball and rugby already in training in preparation for the seasons ahead.
Over the holiday break there will be camps and clinics for these activities and boys who are interested in preparing well should register and participate if they are available.
We are mindful that clashes will occur at this time of the year and reiterate the importance of boys continuing to fulfil their Term 2 commitments, and make sure they are prioritising these as far as training and trials are concerned. There will opportunities for boys to showcase their talents in the weeks ahead.
There are also many end of season functions as we approach the conclusion of the term. These events are an important way of acknowledging the collective efforts of all involved throughout the season. It is also an opportunity for us to acknowledge some of the outstanding individual and team performances. It is important to register for these events within the requested time frames to ensure catering can be properly organised.
On assembly this week we also spoke to the boys about making sure their phones were stored safely in their bags travelling to and from training and games. Middle school students should not be on their phones while on bus journeys. This is particularly relevant to our Year 7 and Year 8 students who frequently train at Northgate for football and rugby.

Fencing Spotlight – First IV Sabre
This week’s first spotlight is on the First IV Sabre Division 1 team: Tom Chan, Vikram Kumar, Lucas Lu and Aiden Seo. So far this season, the team remains undefeated, after a confident 45 – 17 win in Round 3.
A quick chat with Aiden Seo after his team’s bouts revealed he has enjoyed fencing for three years. After a two-year break, Aiden returned because he likes “the mental and physical challenges and particularly figuring out his opponents in a quick amount of time – just five bouts”. Apart from skill, Aiden attributes his success as a sabreur to speed.
In the coming weeks, the First IV will face their most formidable opponent: Brisbane State High School. We wish them the very best for this round and the rest of the season.
Fencing Spotlight – Intermediate Sabre 1
Our second spotlight features the BGS Intermediate 1 team: James Boardman, Riley Booker and Robert Kearney. Comprised of Year 9 sabreurs, this team also won convincingly, 7 bouts to 2, in Round 3.
All three boys are happy to be fencing this year because “it’s fun” and they are building “great friendships”. They have “tried other sports and enjoy this one more”.
This year is James’ second year as a sabreur while it’s Riley’s first year fencing sabre. Riley made the swap and doesn’t regret it because “it’s more his style”. Inspired by his brother Euan, Robert has enjoyed fencing for five years and says “it was the right choice” to fence sabre for the past four years.
It’s no surprise that all boys plan to continue fencing until Year 12. Their enthusiasm is real and contagious. We wish them well for the rest of the season.

Volleyball
Exciting news: Volleyball Queensland have released information about the upcoming trials for The 2023 Australian Youth Volleyball Championships (AYVC)!
Registrations to trial for AYVC are now open and if you believe you have what it takes to represent Queensland in Indoor Volleyball, we invite you to submit your trial nomination. BGS Volleyball has a long standing history of being represented in these state teams. In the past, we have found it the best approach to get a few players together to register and attend the trials as a unit. After all, being the “ultimate teammate” goes along way to supporting our volleyball stars beyond their BGS endeavours.

Junior Dramatic Production | Update
The JDP cast would like to congratulate the cast, crew, and creative team of this year's Senior Dramatic Production, An Experiment with The Caucasian Chalk Circle, on three outstanding performances last week. The play was a testament to the determination and rigour of all involved; the boys should be very proud of the work they shared with the BGS community.
The past six weeks have been busy for the cast of the Junior Dramatic Production, who have dedicated their rehearsal time on immersing themselves in Finegan Kruckemeyer's challenging text, Hibernation.
The icebergs are melting. The animals are dying. The planet is buckling under the weight of our neglect, our greed. In Hibernation, one simple idea is turned into a global movement: what if we could somehow turn back the clock? What if everyone on earth went to sleep for a year and let nature take back control?
The creative team have been impressed with the cast's approach to the mature topics covered in the script, including social awareness, empathy and a duty to be better. The boys' insightful responses were invaluable to the creative process both on and off stage, and challenged them to reflect on the personal impact of their own footprint.
We are looking forward to moving into the Theatre space next week and taking the next steps to integrate sound, lighting, and media which will assist in conveying thought-provoking messages to our audiences.
Mark August 9, 10 and 11 in your diaries for performances. Tickets will be on sale early in Term 3.
