Week 1 Term 4

It is a pleasure to welcome everyone back for the final term of 2020. In the closing stages of what has been a remarkable year, I look forward to witnessing continuing effort and commitment from all boys.

I acknowledge Director of Boarding Berian Williams-Jones and BGS boarding staff for extending supervision to boarders who were unable to return home during the holiday period. The team provided an activities program for those staying on campus, with many boys also taking advantage of holiday tutoring and study sessions in The Lilley Centre. All boarders have now returned to Griffith and Harlin Houses. Additional support will be provided to Year 12 boarders as they prepare for their exam block under the new QCE-ATAR system.

Last Saturday, the School held a function to acknowledge and celebrate the service of three long-serving members of the Board of Trustees: Dr John Fenwick, Mr Chris Morton and Mrs Sue Palmer. The departing Trustees provided a combined 47 years of service to the School as members of the Board, with each playing an indelible role in laying the foundations for what the Board aims to achieve in the coming years. We wish them all well in the future.

Queensland Government COVID-19 restrictions have eased in recent weeks, but BGS boys must continue to focus on good hygiene practices. Over the holidays, updated signage was created to replace the existing reminders around the campus. Please read the following article for a more detailed update on the term ahead.

Term 3 was incredibly busy from the perspective of cocurricular activities. With GPS competition halted in Term 2, the usual calendar was modified to accommodate all Term 2 and Term 3 sports and activities. Cultural performances and exhibitions also went ahead in a variety of modified formats. All staff and students are to be commended for adapting to the required changes.

Congratulations to the BGS Gymnastics team for winning the GPS Gymnastics Championship for the 10th straight year. Well done also to the First IV Tennis and Premier Chess team for finishing their seasons as runners-up. I commend the cast, crew and creative team of the Senior Dramatic Production for putting on a spectacular show, despite the difficulties.

This term sees the completion of the GPS calendar with the Junior and Senior Track and Field Championships on Friday 16 October and Friday 23 October. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the 2020 Track and Field leaders. Congratulations to Captain of Track and Field Lachie Gorringe, Vice Captain Track Harry Chapman and Vice Captain Field Lachie Leung. Please note that the GPS Track and Field Championships will be for students only and no spectators are permitted. Good luck to all competitors.

The weeklong BGS Festival of Music commences this Saturday 10 October with the Music Celebration Evening at The Greek Club, and a virtual Grammar in Concert recording being made available for viewing from 7.30pm. Read more about upcoming events and live streams in the Music section of this newsletter.

Finally, I remind all boys of the importance of maintaining high behavioural and academic standards throughout the remainder of the year. The results you achieve are a reflection of the discipline you have fostered throughout the year.

The Queensland Government COVID-19 restrictions have eased somewhat in recent weeks, but it is important BGS boys continue to remain focused on good hygiene practices. We have updated all COVID signage across the School to ensure the key messages are clear.

Health and Wellbeing

Parents must continue to keep their son home from school if he is unwell, even with mild symptoms. Symptoms that may suggest a contagious illness include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, nausea or diarrhoea. Parents will be required to collect their son from school if he presents with any of these symptoms.

Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education programs are due to commence in Week 1 in Term 4. Year 10 classes will participate in a residential camping experience in tents including bushwalking, rock climbing and abseiling activities over three days. Classes will attend according to the revised Semester 2 Outdoor Education calendar found here on MyGrammar.

The revised calendar provides the opportunity for each Year 10 class to participate in a final expedition at Moogerah with a strong focus on ‘leading others’ and operating independently in the outdoors. These outdoor activities will operate under the approved COVID Safe Industry Plans for Outdoor Education and Outdoor Recreation activities and the BGS COVID Management Plan.

Boarding

The ongoing easing of border restrictions has been a welcome development for BGS boarders. The trans-state exemption for boarding students to travel to and from BGS provides certainty for the term ahead and for the summer break.

Boarders who live overseas continue to face challenges. Our boarders who are Australian citizens would need to quarantine on their re-entry to Australia if they travel overseas, while our international students, those on visas to study in the country, would not be able to re-enter Australia if they return home as it stands. There is a sizeable lobby from tertiary institutions and schools regarding an exemption for international students and we hope for greater clarity in the coming weeks.

A reminder that the Boarding Dinner is on Saturday 14 November for Year 12 boarders and families.

Term 4 Events

BGS has been proactively working with venues, the Queensland Government and the local Public Health Unit to ensure as many of our scheduled Term 4 events go ahead in some form. We have had to be flexible with how we proceed with all events, but through extensive planning we continue to be able to deliver events for the boys and our community.

New BPAY payment option and decommissioned legacy option

School fees can now be paid online without logging into MyGrammar. Your BPAY reference number can be provided to a third person (e.g. grandparents), so they can make a payment on your behalf. If you let them know your account balance, they will be presented with the amount outstanding during the payment process and will therefore be assured that it is going to the right account.

All you need to know to be able to make a payment is:

• Your BPAY reference number
• The amount you wish to pay
• The email address that you would like the receipt emailed to

You can continue to log into MyGrammar to make a payment, view your account transactions, receipts and statements. 

Please note, the legacy payment gateway previously available for anonymous payments is now decommissioned. If you have used the legacy payment gateway, please delete any bookmarks you may have kept and replace it with the link above.

Queensland Mental Health Week | 10 – 18 October 2020

It was fantastic to welcome students back, and I never take for granted the extraordinary support provided by parents to make this happen. As I do at the start of each term, I remind parents of the importance of recreating good routines for your son at home. This will be the focus in the boarding houses over the next few weeks. 

Term 4 doesn't provide much lead-in time, but I enjoyed the slower-pace term break. Over the break, I took some advice from the Queensland Mental Health Week's (QMHW) theme, which suggests we 'Take Time' for ourselves; a fantastic concept for our wellbeing. QMHW runs from Saturday 10 October to Sunday 18 October. We will be raising awareness with our boys throughout next week. I encourage you to raise awareness with your son and encourage him to take time to look after himself.

Managing your son's sleep routine, as well as your own, would be a wonderful and beneficial starting point. Digital screens around the School are being used to promote good sleeping patterns, healthy eating, and exercise routines. These skills will assist your son during this short and fast-paced term. 

Given the challenges we have all faced professionally and personally this year, is there ever a better time to 'Take Time' and look after ourselves a bit more? Perhaps your greatest gift this week would be to show your son how it can be achieved.

Speech Day

Speech Day will be held Wednesday 18 November at QPAC Concert Hall for Year 12 students and their parents only. Parents of those attending can book online via QPAC, with a maximum of two seats per family. The booking link will be made available shortly.

Year 12s do not need to attend school on Speech Day and should proceed directly to QPAC.

Speech Day will be a normal school day with classes for Years 5 to 11.

Years 9 to 11 Prizes

Prize presentations for Years 9 to 11 will be held Friday 20 November in the Great Hall from 11.00am to 12.30pm (student prizewinners only).

No parents or guests are permitted at the Years 9 to 11 event; however, the ceremony will be recorded and streamed for families the following week.

Friday 20 November will be a normal school day otherwise for students in Years 5 to 11.

Middle School Presentation Afternoon

The Middle School Presentation Afternoon will be held Wednesday 25 November at 11.00am in Centenary Hall. It will be a student-only event.

The Presentation Afternoon will be live streamed to the BGS community, with a link to be sent out closer to the event.

Wednesday 25 November is otherwise a normal school day for all Middle School students.

There are three critical online portals that Queensland Year 12 students need to have set up as soon as possible.

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) Student Portal

The Student Portal delivers all your learning information in one place. You can check your personal details, access your learning account, get your final Year 12 results and more. Students need to register here. Students will need:

• Their LUI number
• A non-school email address
• A mobile phone number

This portal will provide the final subject results of internal and external assessments on 19 December. It does not include the ATAR which is issued by the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC).

The QTAC ATAR Portal

Last term we provided students with the opportunity to register for the QTAC ATAR portal. Most students are registered. Students can log in to check their registration or sign up here.

This portal will allow students to view their ATAR at 9.00am on 19 December. For information on the portal and the ATAR click here.

Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) applications

The majority of students have already applied to QTAC. To apply for a tertiary place in Queensland you need to create a different account with QTAC before you can lodge your application. Full details on this process can be found here

In summary, the final subject results are released by the QCAA and the ATAR is released by QTAC. Applications for a tertiary place are lodged with QTAC.

I am delighted to welcome the community back to Harlin House and Griffith House at the start of the final term of the year.

Firstly, I wish to express my sincere thanks to the staff who supervised those boarders who were unable to return home over the term break. Their willingness and commitment to the boys has been exemplary and I thank Messrs Jones, Bertram, Brady, Power and Scott for their efforts over the past fortnight.

The boys who remained on campus were kept active and busy. From the Ninja Warrior course at Guyatt Park to a very competitive game of putt-putt at Victoria Park; our activities program was hopefully a compensation for those who were not able to enjoy time at home with their family.

I wish to take this opportunity to welcome Mr Joshua Zuill to our boarding community. A former student at both Nudgee College and Gregory Terrace, he will be well versed with the demands and nuances of a GPS education. Mr Zuill is currently studying to become a teacher at Queensland University of Technology and works as a Learning Support Aide at St Laurence’s College.

We also welcome back Mrs Angela Dunn, who was absent at the end of Term 3. We are delighted to see Mrs Dunn back with us and in good health. Her insight and experience will be much valued over the course of the next few weeks.

9H and 9I completed their 2020 Outdoor Education experience at the end of Term 3. The boys took the opportunity at the end of the term to enjoy the outdoors and the company of their friends. Harry Cardell-Ree was an excellent participant. He was willing to challenge himself and support his friends. Ritvik Karmakar maintained a very positive attitude and showed initiative by looking to lend a hand where he could.

Sebastien Roy-Bryant was a mature student ready to take on the challenges. Sebastian demonstrated a good understanding of the program objectives and was willing to push himself. Oliver Waterhouse embraced the high ropes activity. His gymnastics experience helped him breeze through the high ropes course, showing plenty of balance and confidence. Ned Weightman engaged in the cultural and environmental lessons during the hike. He maintained a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards the whole experience. Sam Brown and Rowan Tong-Law were excellent participants whose energy had a positive impact on the rest of their group.

During the holidays the Outdoor Education Department conducted a four-day bushwalking expedition as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Twenty-seven students from Years 9 to 12 took part in the journey and visited a new area each day from base camp at Moogerah. The boys experienced Flinders Peak, Mt Maroon, Mt Barney Creek and Mr Cordeaux. They returned to Moogerah each afternoon to prepare their own food on camp stoves and learn about expedition camping around the fire each evening.

Year 10 Outdoor Education begins this week with a return to expedition programs. The Year 10 classes will undertake a three-day expedition visiting Bitenbar, Pulpit Rock and the Teviot Range. The program focuses on ‘leading others’ and each student has the chance to take on leadership roles during the journey.

Outdoor Education photos including the Duke of Edinburgh expedition photos are now be available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. You can then view the photos by clicking on the Year 9 folder in Pixevety.

GrammarWell

Earlier in the year, we shared with you our online student wellbeing platform, GrammarWell. Initially designed to support and connect boys during their home-based learning, the platform has grown to include a range of resources supporting boys' social and emotional wellbeing.  

New themes include:

• Learning Optimisation
• Respectful Relationships and Healthy Sexuality
• Positive Choices with a focus on alcohol and drug education

The platform will continue to be updated to ensure boys have access to relevant and current information and are better informed to make responsible choices about their and others' wellbeing.

Social media and online chat forums

Brett Lee from Internet Safe Education recently wrote an article for parents and carers about Discord. Discord is on an online group chat platform initially built for gamers, but it has since become a general use platform to connect people with similar interests. The app is popular with both primary and secondary students alike. 

There are considerations that Brett believes parents should be aware of that relate to screen time, along with undesirable behaviour and content. You can access the article here.

Student Wellbeing lessons allow boys to discuss such platforms and consider how they use them to connect with others online.

We take great pleasure in celebrating with the community the recent successes of Year 12 students Ben Cribb and Jack Woolrych.

The boys’ bodies of work from their Art as Knowledge unit were selected to represent BGS in the regional Creative Generation Awards for Excellence in Visual Art exhibition this year, along with Thomas Sullivan and Louis Goggins.

From this regional exhibition, a shortlist of works were selected to be on display at GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) in 2021, along with other shortlisted students from around the state. The exhibition then will travel to regional galleries.

From over 500 student entries across the state, only 37 Excellence Awards and a further 38 Commendation Awards were given. Brisbane Metropolitan region is one of the most competitive, with the most schools represented of any region.

Selected as two of the 38 artworks awarded a Commendation Award were Ben’s Shadows of Struggle and Jack’s People, Possessions.

The Art Department would like to thank the Art Support Group for its longstanding tradition of supporting our Artist-in-Residence program. This year again, they provided the seniors with a two-day immersion among a group of professional artists at Moogerah. Students worked alongside their mentor artist, which informed the success of our 2020 award recipients. We are looking forward to seeing what comes from the end-of-year Moogerah immersion, which will inform the 2021 Year 12s bodies of work.

I extend a very warm welcome to families who are new to Brisbane Grammar School this term.

It has been pleasing to see the boys return to school re-energised and eager to catch up with their peers and teachers.

This week, boys have been actively engaged in their first Signature Program for the year. Signature Programs are collaborative tasks that lead students through the design thinking process to find solutions to real-world challenges. Fostering critical and creative thinking, the Signature Programs allow our students to become deeply immersed in their topic and explore issues from various viewpoints, while developing a range of new skills.

Some of our Year 7 boys have combined their culinary and technological skills to design their own ‘My Kitchen Rules’ app and our Year 6 students have showcased their entrepreneurial talents by developing and running their own small business. Thank you to Mr Grice and the program leaders for organising and facilitating this year’s programs.

Parents and students are reminded of our online Student Wellbeing platform: GrammarWell. GrammarWell is regularly updated to include relevant and useful information to support students’ wellbeing. Some topics include managing sleep, steps to study success, foods that help our brains learn and respectful relationships. Term 4 is a short and fast-paced term and many of the resources available on the platform might prove beneficial over the remaining weeks.

Interwing Activities

The final weeks of Term 3 were full of interwing activities, with all Middle School year levels contesting basketball and touch competitions.

Years 5 and 6 also participated in modified Interwing Track and Field Carnivals to assist us in identifying potential athletes for the upcoming GPS Track and Field Championship. The modified format enabled boys to compete in all events, and they had a wonderful time trying events like hurdles and discus for the first time.

The final interwing event of the year, the Interwing Swimming Carnival, will be held at Centenary Pool on Friday 23 October. To comply with COVID-19 restrictions, we will run three separate carnivals throughout the day. Please see the schedule below. All Middle School classes will follow the normal timetable for the remainder of the day. Additional details will be sent home later this week.

We are aware that some Years 7 and 8 boys will be competing at the GPS Track and Field Championships and will miss the swimming carnival. This was unavoidable due to the date of the championships changing.  

Track and Field

Thank you to the boys and coaches who gave up their valuable holiday time to attend the Track and Field training clinic. The short season has made time for team preparation even more precious, and I am sure our boys will be well prepared for the approaching championships.

The GPS Track and Field Championships for boys aged 10 to 12 years will be held at Nudgee College on Friday 16 October, with the 13 years to Open age carnival held the following week on Friday 23 October at QSAC.

As part of our aim to be the best school for boys in Australia, we continue to ensure that the BGS Cocurricular Department implements programs, reviews outcomes and adapts to information collected. Thank you to those students, parents and coaches who completed the review of Term 3 sports and activities. Analysis of this data is underway and, once completed, will be shared with the community. This data will then be used to drive our decision making for 2021.

We have one more championship to finish the 2020 GPS calendar. The Track and Field season has been shortened this year. This evening sees boys involved in their first competition with an eye to the championships in a few weeks. All students, track and field athletes or not, should avail themselves of this training to push for team selection, or to move into preseason training for Term 1 sports. The BGS motto and culture celebrates endeavour.

This week saw our Chess, Fencing and Rugby captains give their final speeches in wrapping up their respective seasons at assembly. Well done to all students involved in these programs throughout a very busy Term 3. We must also congratulate Liam Scheel and the Met North U19 boys’ volleyball team, who competed in the Queensland U19 School Sport Volleyball championships and were undefeated tournament champions. Liam’s efforts have seen him selected as a member of the Australian Youth Men's Volleyball 2020 Squad. Similarly, congratulations to Kipp Thrupp who was selected into the Queensland School Sport Hockey team, based on his performance at the recent State Championships. Well done gentlemen.

A survey will sent to boys shortly to sign on for sports and activities for 2021. This will allow organisational structures and resources to be put in place.

The time has arrived! We are in for a feast of music in the next few weeks, including some live events. The exhaustive process of recording our top ensembles to prepare a virtual Grammar in Concert event is complete and the concert is ready to go. All instrumental ensembles, including Junior and Intermediate groups, have been faithfully preparing for their final performance for the year which culminates this coming week in a series of live-streamed events. Our choirs and jazz bands are excited to be performing for a live audience next weekend. We sincerely hope you can support the boys by attending either in person or virtually.

Specific performance details have been communicated to families, but see below for a summary of events and how you can be involved.

Many will be gathering at the Greek Club to view this together as part of the end-of-year Music Celebration. All members of the Music community are encouraged to view the video of the concert. Showcase Concerts

These concerts will be the final performance opportunities for our instrumental ensembles and are significant events for our 2020 Music students. Each concert will be live streamed via 5Stream at 6.00pm each evening next week. These concerts will be pay-for-view at the cost of $10 per device; we hope families can gather to enjoy the music! To purchase access to each concert go to bgs.5stream.com and register to create an account, then select your concerts and make payment directly through the site. You will receive an email with your receipt and the viewing link, or simply find the 5Stream page via MyGrammar | Music and login when the concert is ready to start.

Once again, each concert will remain accessible with a purchased link for about a month.

BGS v BGGS Fixtures

In Term 3 Week 10, BGS welcomed Brisbane Girls Grammar School for some friendly fencing fixtures. It was great to have some competition against a different school to end the term. The girls had four teams, and selected boys were invited to attend. 

The BGS Senior Epee and Senior Foil teams won comfortably. The Junior Foil teams fought valiantly to come out on top winning two out of three matches and losing the third by only one bout.  

Fencing Whites

Cocurricular photos were taken on Thursday this week, and all fencing whites should have been returned. Any fencers who have retained their whites should have already discussed this with Ms Melanie Chin. To avoid a late return fee, please contact fencing@brisbanegrammar.com if you haven’t done so already.

Good luck to all fencers who are competing in the QFA Epee and Foil Round Robin competitions over the next two months. It is great to see fencers continuing with the sport outside of school.

Much has been happening in recent weeks for our Robotics students. We have boys representing Australia at an international competition, a new season launched and we have started building our new robots.

FIRST Global Challenge

Our six students who are part of the Australian FIRST Global Challenge have now wrapped up their competition. The 2020 FIRST Global Challenge — Connecting Communities, consisted of three months of social media and technical challenges, talks by STEM professionals and technical training sessions. Australia was one of 190 countries represented at the event. Presenters including entertainer and innovator will.i.am and astronaut Anousheh Ansari were inspirational and opened our eyes to STEM potential of the future. One of our submissions of a Glorious Global Motion Machine can be viewed here. Our mechanism is the final one which features the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a koala, Uluru and Vegemite. For our final project, the boys designed a device to keep sharks away from swimmers. The Shanklet safely deters sharks from swimming near humans who are wearing the satellite-activated, shark-repellent anklet. The device uses a natural compound to deter sharks.

FTC season launch

The 2020/21 season for FIRST Technology Challenge launched just before the holidays. This season’s game is titled Ultimate Goal and draws strong influence from competitive sports. During a match, four robots are on the field, with two per team. Objectives include firing discs into goals, moving through the field autonomously and knocking down targets. A full game video is available to view here. We have two teams competing this year at the state competition in early November. There is a lot of work to do to design, build and program these robots. Our holiday workshops have set the boys up well in preparation for the upcoming competition.

FTC Coach and Players Day

Three of our Robotics team members attended a season launch event late last term at Grace College, called Coach and Players Day. Alec, Josh and Aidan represented BGS proudly on the day, sharing their experience with rookie schools. We were also able to reconnect with our team members from Brisbane Girls Grammar School, as well as students from 20 other South East Queensland schools. The P&F Auxiliary is a subcommittee of the P&F Association that facilitates fundraising and fosters parent fellowship and the sense of strong community at Brisbane Grammar School. All profits are returned to the School to enhance the experience for students and families.

The Tuckshop and Grammar Shop are currently operating cash-free, so please plan accordingly. Safety guidelines regarding social distancing and hand sanitising will continue in both locations. 

Tuckshop

Open school days before school, during breaks and at lunchtime.

The Tuckshop provides a selection of hot food, fresh salads, wraps, rolls and drinks. Please recharge your MSA cards here.

Grammar Shop

Open school days from 7.30am to 11.00am.

The Year 8 Tie Ceremony will be held 26-27 October and all Year 8 students will require a BGS tie for that event. Ties are $20 at the Grammar Shop and students can pay using a debit card, MSA funds on their Student ID cards, or funds placed on account with the Grammar Shop.

Year 8 students should also plan to come to the Grammar Shop this term to purchase their Senior School uniform of a blue shirt, trousers, trouser socks and tie. It is not necessary to make an appointment, just come on in either before school or at morning tea.

Year 11 students are welcome to come to the Grammar Shop to purchase their Units 3 and 4 textbooks and senior ties.

Newly redesigned BGS car stickers are now in stock. Add a display of school pride to your vehicle for only $5.

The Grammar Shop has recently relocated to the basement level of The Lilley Centre and we look forward to showing you our new premises. Staff need to maintain social distancing parameters of 1.5m, but students are welcome to try on uniforms themselves, or parents may wish to come to the shop to fit their son/s if they prefer. The Hardwood Club (BGS Basketball Support Group) invites you to attend our Annual General Meeting to be held on Wednesday 28 October at 6.00pm via Microsoft Teams.

All voluntary positions on the support group committee will be declared vacant.

The Normanby Blues Annual General Meeting will be held Monday 9 November 6.30pm to 8.00pm.

It will be held in a private room on level 3 at the Normanby Hotel to make a more social occasion of it.
