2021 Student Leaders
Fostering student leadership is central to a Brisbane Grammar School education. The School views service as the essence of leadership.
Leadership is an essential component of a school’s successes or failures. The best schools will have an effective student leadership group, most of whom will not have a badge or be looking for accolades. They will do what’s right because it is right.
We are fortunate at BGS that so many students want to lead and want to positively contribute to this community. The names listed below represent a diverse cross-section of student interests and therefore truly represent the student voice.
On behalf of the School, it is my pleasure to announce and congratulate the boys selected by their peers and staff to be Prefects in 2021. As the Year 12s move closer and closer to graduating, the current Year 11 students have begun to assume greater responsibility for leading the student body. I join staff in saying that we have greatly appreciated the efforts of the Class of 2020 and look forward to assisting the Class of 2021 move into leadership positions in the coming weeks and next year.

School Fees: New Payment Option
New BPAY payment option and decommissioned legacy option
School fees can now be paid online without logging into MyGrammar. Your BPAY reference number can be provided to a third person (e.g. grandparents), so they can make a payment on your behalf. All you need to know to be able to make a payment is:
- Your BPAY reference number
- The amount you wish to pay
- The email address that you would like the receipt emailed to
Click here and select the Pay with Statement option to make an anonymous payment.
You can continue to log into MyGrammar to make a payment, view your account transactions, receipts and statements.
Please note, the legacy payment gateway previously available for anonymous payments is now decommissioned. If you have used the legacy payment gateway, please delete any bookmarks you may have kept and replace it with the link above.

2020 Senior Cohort
Next Thursday will be the final assembly for the Year 12 cohort, when the 2020 Track and Field team will be presented to the School. In a challenging year, our Year 12 cohort has provided exceptional support for BGS.
I wish to thank our School Prefects and Boarding Prefects for their leadership this year. The group has worked hard to keep students connected within the Year 12 cohort and across year levels. Our Form Seniors have again done an excellent job in working with our younger students. Their authentic connection has proven to be a powerful tool in assisting younger boys to understand the School’s culture.
I also acknowledge the work of the boys involved in the various senior committees. They have worked hard to support important student-led initiatives that have had a positive impact on large numbers of boys.
This year, I met with the student leaders on a weekly basis. I want to thank and congratulate School Captain Will Hay, School Vice Captain Will Chapman, School Vice Captain and Boarding Captain Alex MacGibbon and Boarding Vice Captain Stephen Baronio. It has been delightful getting to know this group and I have been thoroughly impressed with their commitment to their fellow students at BGS. They are humble young men who understand the importance of selflessness to effective leadership. As a school, we have been very lucky to have had this group in 2020.
Take Time
As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we have raised awareness this week regarding mental health. To ‘Take Time’ has been at the centre of the messages we have shared with the boys. If you have not had a chance, it would be beneficial if you raised the issue with your son and connect the at-school message with the at-home message. If there are any issues that need to be shared please make contact with your son’s Head of Year.

ATAR cutoffs, early entry schemes and tertiary preferences
There are indications from the university sector that ATAR cutoffs may rise for entry to university in 2021. This is driven by increased demand reported by the various tertiary admission centres. At the same time, some institutions are responding to the 2020 COVID experience by giving students who meet a certain standard access to early offers.
What to do?
Over the past 10 years at Brisbane Grammar School we have been fortunate to have a consistently high level of tertiary offers in years that have high and low cutoffs. The key is in careful preferencing.
Preferences should follow the pattern below:
Preference 1 and 2: Courses that you most want to study
Preference 3 and 4: Less competitive courses that you want to study
Preference 5 and 6: Courses that will help you upgrade to a course you really want.
The Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) has detailed information on how to order preferences. Click here to view.
The early offer schemes offered by QUT and Griffith University in Brisbane have details about managing your preferences as the two institutions intend to offer to eligible candidates prior to the release of the ATARs. Check their requirements at the following links:
Boarding
Director of Boarding
Berian Williams-Jones
One of the greatest privileges of working in boarding, which I know I have shared on countless occasions, is that natural sense of connection with families that comes from looking after boys in the residential setting. It is that connection that enables the School to work in partnership with home when we must navigate the challenges of school life, and that also makes celebrating success that much sweeter.
On our recent tour of Central Queensland it was a pleasure to connect with current and former parents, as well as many prospective families who are considering BGS as an option. Our goal with these events is very simple: to build a community in a region whose common thread is a connection to BGS.
A personal highlight of the tour was to meet John Lebsfant, a former boarder in School House, or what we today call the Roe Building. I first met John a year ago at the AgroTrend event at the Bundaberg Showgrounds. While I looked forward to meeting him once again, I did not expect him to attend with his old school shirt and his BGS badges.
It was a rare treat to see a BGS uniform that is almost 70 years old. Although his shirt is now showing some wear and tear, for me what is important is that John had both kept and looked after a piece of BGS history for so many years. It was also rewarding to see John’s school badge from 1952 and 1953, and to hear his tales of the monumental effort at the start and end of term in getting to and from Brisbane.
I was left to reflect on what mementos boarders of the Class of 2020 will keep of their school days. Perhaps the Harlin House Prefect badge will be kept by some, and I know that many will keep the embroidered blazer pocket, but what about their ID card?
What I do know is that our current Year 12 boarders will take with them friendships that will stand the test of time. They will take memories, both good and occasionally challenging, and I hope a great sense of fondness or affection for the School, and especially their Boarding family.

Raising Boys
Many parents will attest to the fact that boys can be active, loud, rambunctious and prone to rough play. However, parents also need to be aware of stereotypes influencing how they act towards their sons. There is a recognised danger of pigeonholing children with gender-specific roles or expectations. The male brain is different in its development – a boy’s physical maturity is often at odds with his mental or emotional maturity.
Societal beliefs about how to raise boys can influence how we act, and although we are not determined by our biology, it is a factor. It is important to support boys in nurturing their strengths and abilities. One of the most important determinants for a boy’s healthy development is how secure they feel growing up.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents and guardians will gain a better understanding into some of the more complex issues relating to raising boys.

Outdoor Education
Director of Outdoor Education
Derek Jervis
Year 10 Outdoor Education has begun in a revised format. Each class will visit Moogerah for a three-day expedition focused on the dispositions of leading others. The boys plan and execute a journey designed by their expedition groups. A range of height activities and bushwalking options are available and give each student the opportunity for several leadership roles to put their planned expedition in place. The three expedition groups in 10A planned very different journeys for their final program.
Nicholas Dalgleish was an energetic and enthusiastic student. He showed natural leadership ability, and this developed as he demonstrated empathy for his peers during the expedition. William Matthews provided a wealth of environmental knowledge; he came with so much to share with his group and he also showed a strong strength of character to stay positive even when the hiking got challenging.
Angus Bisset came willing to make the most of the opportunity and to challenge himself. Angus discovered new levels that he could push himself to and maintained a great smile and positive attitude. Theo Dickey demonstrated effective leadership qualities when managing his peer group. Theo showed a willingness to take the group's needs into account when planning and leading.
Henry Nelson came out to Moogerah with a clear goal to climb the final peak of the program, Mt Moon. Henry was motivated, considerate and a great leader and team member for his group. Xavier Lynch and Cian Clarke were keen rock climbers. They took the opportunity to challenge themselves on the longest and most challenging climb and were satisfied when they completed the route.
Angus Bisset wrote the following reflection of his time at Moogerah:
“Six years have passed, but it feels like no time has passed. I have changed so much, yet I feel much the same. I have loved every second that I have been at Moogerah. I have discovered my limits (and passed them too). I have made incredible connections and I have so many positive stories to tell. I am a city boy at heart, but Moogerah has left its mark on me.”
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 10A Video link.
Outdoor Education photos including the Duke of Edinburgh expedition photos are now be available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. You can then view the photos by clicking on the Year 9 folder in Pixevety.
Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh Award program at BGS has not taken a back seat this year. Boys have continued to work through their physical, skill and community goals despite restrictions, and recently completed their Adventurous Journey expeditions.
In September, our highly skilled and passionate Outdoor Education staff Mr Derek Jervis and Mr Mat Fairley facilitated an expedition from the BGS Outdoor Education Centre at Moogerah. Students camped in tents, cooked on camp stoves and completed a hike each day in the surrounding area including Flinders Peak, Mt Cordeaux, Mt Mitchell, Mt Barney. The most challenging but favourite of many boys was Mt Maroon at 1000m above sea level. These walks are accessible to the public, and the decision was made to set these epic peaks as the daily destinations.
Gold Award participant Joshua Wong (Year 11) reflected on his experience:
The Moogerah bushwalking journey was a unique trip. D of E focused on camping in the wilderness and developing skills to prepare and embrace the challenges with living out of a backpack with others. While COVID-19 regulations prevented a true wilderness camping experience, the bushwalks of the mountains surrounding Moogerah were a suitable substitute as physical and mental challenges. One of the most spectacular challenges was climbing Mt Maroon. Being a kilometre tall, climbing the mountain was no easy task due to its continuous vertical rock crawls, exhausting walks and slip and loose rock hazards with every step. By no means was it a comfortable stroll in the park under the blazing sun, but the mountain challenged us to embrace it and persist to gradually scale it. It's already intimidating looking up and hardly being able to see the top, let alone climbing it. However, slowly scale it and Mt Maroon rewards you well with a spectacular view and a fresh cool breeze to complement your lunch as you look down to catch a glimpse of the great journey you completed. When you're at the top of any mountain, look back down and take in the view; it's the reward for all the effort you've put in, from the bottom at the car park, to the rocks at the peak.
Working towards their qualifying journeys, the boys are very motivated to take stock of the experience ahead of their upcoming trip in December.

Geography
It is with much delight that I share the results of the 2020 Australian Geography Competition with the Brisbane Grammar School community. The competition questions require students to draw on their geographic knowledge as well as analysing maps, aerial photographs and graphic representations of information.
For the 11th consecutive year, BGS placed first in Queensland in the competition. With over 70,000 entries from across Australia, I am pleased to share that BGS placed fifth in the country. This is the highest national ranking we have achieved.
There were also exceptional results achieved by four of our students:
- Blaire Xu, Year 7, First in Queensland
- Arthur Hames, Year 8, First in Queensland
- David Sun, Year 9, Equal First in Queensland
- Riley Walsh, Year 9, Equal First in Queensland
Congratulations to these boys for their individual success.
I thank the teachers for their efforts in the administration of the competition, preparing the students through the teaching and learning program, as well as their enthusiasm for the subject.

Unravelling riddles, practicing sword skills, defeating monsters, working as a team to solve problems, and Skyping a fantasy author – these were just some of the activities a group of Year 8s were involved in last week as they traversed The Land of Remorse, one of the Middle School Signature Programs. Each group of five was assigned a colour, a character trait and a team (Atreyu, Gandalf, Dumbledore or Excalibur) and then sent on a quest to physically experience some of the challenges characters in a fantasy story might encounter. They then used the notes from their journals and ideas suggested by author Dawn Meredith to craft a group story, with members each writing a section from the perspective of a different character. The final task for the band of heroes was to create a video presentation of their story to share with younger students.
Not only was this a fantastic writing experience for the boys, its value extended to a whole set of other skills important to the development of young BGS men:
- Collaborating with people who are not close friends
- Inclusivity and respecting differences
- Actively listening to others
- Following instructions
- Being prepared
- Thinking creatively
- Solving problems
- Taking the initiative
- Being persistent but resilient
- Reflecting on character strengths
- Reflecting on their successes and how to improve.

Acting Head of Middle School | Rebecca Campbell
This week, our Year 8 students started their transition program for 2021. On Monday, the boys completed a survey about their perceptions of their upcoming Senior School experience. The data will be instrumental in shaping the Student Wellbeing curriculum throughout the remainder of the year. Lessons will be written to promote student thinking about what each boy can do to ensure he is prepared to meet the demands and expectations that come with the transition to Year 9. After the survey, a sausage sizzle was held on the Boarders’ Lawn. School Captain Will Hay welcomed the boys and provided a few words of wisdom on what they can expect over the coming years. I strongly encourage all Year 8 boys to finish their final term in the Middle School positively and productively.
Next Friday, all Middle School students will be involved in our annual Interwing Swimming Carnival. Due to COVID restrictions, the format will be different to previous years. It is important to note, that this is a student only event. Mr McFarlane has sent an email to all families outlining arrangements for the day.
As this week was Queensland Mental Health Week, today’s assembly address focused on mental wellbeing. I encouraged the boys to take productive steps to support their own wellbeing through embracing six building blocks:
- Get healthy
- Keep learning
- Show kindness
- Connect more
- Take notice
- Embrace nature
I found these building blocks to be simple yet effective ways to inform boys about proactive ways to nurture their own wellbeing. If you wish to discuss these further with your son, information can be located here.

Grammar in Concert
It was a delight to be able to share the work of our outstanding young performers via the virtual Grammar in Concert event last weekend. There was a happy gathering of senior musicians, their families and staff at the Greek Club last Saturday evening to celebrate the release of Grammar in Concert. Hundreds of people also gathered in their own homes to enjoy the wonderful music performances. If you are yet to view the concert, it is not too late! It will be available for several weeks on YouTube. The easiest way to view it to go to the Music section of MyGrammar, where you will also find a digital program. Click here to watch 2020 Grammar in Concert.
Showcase Concerts
This past week it has been very exciting to have hosted three live-streamed concerts. On Tuesday all Concert Bands, Percussion Ensembles as well as the Saxophone and Double Reed Ensembles were featured. Wednesday’s event featured all the String Ensembles as well as the Flute and Clarinet Ensembles. The week concluded with both Symphony Orchestras and the Symphonic Band. These concerts were significant as the culminating concerts for these 2020 ensembles. Hundreds tuned in from home and the boys responded very positively to the pressure of having to get it right the first time!
These concerts are still available for people to subscribe to so they can enjoy the music at their leisure. To purchase access ($10), go to bgs.5stream.com to register and create an account, select your concert/s and make payment directly through the site.
We are also looking forward to Sing & Swing this Sunday, which will be the final event in the Festival of Music. The event is sold out, which is testament to how much we all have been looking forward to a live music event!
Virtual Concert # 5
The final of our virtual concerts is now available on MyGrammar. This concert features the Term 3 work of Holst Concert Band, Stradivari Strings, Crash Percussion Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble and Guarneri Strings. Well done boys!

We would love to hear from you!
The Art Support Group is seeking new members as well as nominations from our BGS community for the positions of President, Vice President and Secretary.
This year, the Art Support Group presented an innovative reinvention of the annual BGS Art Show when faced with the logistical challenges of COVID restrictions. The group of dedicated parents were resourceful and innovative in their commitment to present the Art Show to the community.
Three members who have shown generous commitment and leadership have announced that this year will see the end of their time in the committee. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bronwyn Jerrard, Kylie Tolhurst and Karen Seifert for their continued support of Visual Art at BGS, and acknowledge their commitment and service. Vice President Ms Karen Seifert for her irrepressible cheerfulness and positive support for our committee; Secretary Ms Kylie Tolhurst for her commitment to upholding the quality of the Art Support Group legacy for the past four years; and finally, President Mrs Bronwyn Jerrard for her incredible leadership. Her unwavering resilience and pragmatic approach to any problem was the key ingredient to the committee’s success, particularly this year.
The BGS Art Department thanks the Art Support Group for their commitment to the arts and its promotion in the BGS community.
Please forward expressions of interest and/or nominations for 2021 membership to art@brisbanegrammar.com.

Normanby Blues (Rugby Support Group) AGM Notice
The Normanby Blues Annual General Meeting will be held Monday 9 November 6.30pm to 8.00pm.
We would be delighted for interested Middle School rugby parents to consider nominating for the Normanby Blues Committee. This is not only because the younger age groups are an important stakeholder in BGS Rugby, but also because the work done by the committee today has the most impact on those boys coming through the Senior School in the future.
The AGM will be held in a private room on level 3 at the Normanby Hotel to make a more social occasion of it.
Items of business will be:
- 2020 Normanby Blues Highlights
- Treasurer’s Report
- Table 2021 Budget
- NB Resignations/Appointments of the 2021 Office Bearers (President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary)
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
