Lead Article
Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School | David Carroll
As usual, we have had a very busy Semester 1 at Brisbane Grammar School. In this final article for the term, I wanted to share some of our collective achievements and school highlights, mention staff changes, and announce student leadership positions for Term 3.
Open Day last Saturday was a huge success, with a record attendance of 4000 people on campus. Perhaps not being able to host a physical Open Day last year led to pent up demand, but we were a little surprised at the number of past, present and future students and their families who visited the School. Thank you to all members of the community – teachers, parents, and business services staff – who worked together to show Brisbane Grammar School in such a positive light. A special thank you to Mr Frank McClatchy and Mr Greg Tier who coordinated the day.
Congratulations to our boarders, who have coped admirably with their temporary move to 89 Gregory Terrace while Harlin House is refurbished. We wish them a safe journey home and look forward to their return in three weeks.
Our Year 12s have had a busy couple of weeks with assessment, and are no doubt looking forward to a holiday. The Lilley Centre will be open during the break, but I encourage our seniors to balance study with relaxation, so they have energy for their final semester. I would also like to congratulate the Academic and Spirit Committees for their proactive support of their peers, and mention Lucas Raaymakers (5D), Noah Guthrie (5A), Nicholas Ho (7E) Ben Rainbird (7C) and Leo Van Brunschot who have been outstanding Form Seniors this semester.
Many boys across all year levels have taken up the Push-Up Challenge in June, to raise money for mental health charities Headspace and Lifeline. Led by Mr Gus Robertson, BGS is now second on the Queensland Leaderboard, with 589 students and staff having raised $11,336 with 461,115 push-ups! Well done to everyone involved.
We have had much success in our Cocurricular program. Some highlights from Term 2 include:
- BGS Gymnasts won the Lead Up meet series and the inaugural GPS Gymnastics Foundation Cup. Congratulations to the senior boys for their leadership and the work of Mr Coates and his coaches.
- Music returned to live concerts in Term 2, and Grammar in Concert Live Again before an audience of 800 was a highlight. Well done to our musicians and Mr Ingram and the team of music staff who supported them.
- 620 boys have been involved in the Football program this term, with several teams taking out premierships: 7D, 8C, 9C, 10A, 11B, 11C. At time of writing, several others are still in contention: 7B, 7C, 9A, 9D, 9E, Second XI and Third XI.
- Our Fencers have also done well, with 130 boys making up 35 teams with 24 podium finishes. BGS achieved an overall season ranking of first place with 117 matches won.
- The 2021 Tennis campaign has been very successful. We currently have 19 undefeated teams including the First IV, who are on their way to becoming GPS premiers for the first time since 2013. Five A teams are in the hunt for undefeated premierships. Their hard work has very much paid off.
- We enjoyed an exceptional Senior Drama Production in A Few Good Men this term. Boys involved in the Junior Drama Production will be rehearsing over the holidays, and Middle School boys will be rehearsing for auditions early in Term 3. We are very fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated Drama Department at BGS.
I hope all students take maximum advantage of the opportunities at BGS and acknowledge the staff who contribute their time and expertise to make these experiences possible.
As always, there is considerable activity during the mid-year break:
- Students participating in the Red Earth Immersion Tour are travelling to Cape York.
- Boys involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award will be taking part in a bushwalking expedition along the Scenic Rim Trail.
- Our Sailors are off to the National Competition in Sydney and we wish them luck.
- Boys playing GPS Basketball and Rugby are involved in training camps, with skills training for Swimming, Gymnastics and Tennis.
- Performance Development will continue in the ISC weights room.
I would also like to share these staff changes:
- Mathematics teacher Mr Peter Fass and Archivist Ms Vivien Harris will be on long service leave in Term 3.
- Several staff will be taking maternity leave in Semester 2: Mrs Rebecca Haskmann, Mrs Tania Connell, Ms Dominique Andrews, Ms Bella MacDiarmid, Mrs Riza Chu, and Ms Chaanya Fernando.
- Director of Finance Mrs Kay Goodwin has retired.
- Head Rowing Coach Mr Sean Carolan and Nurse Mrs Karyn Mitchell have resigned.
We wish all these staff well while on leave and in their future endeavours.
I wish to congratulate these students who will lead their respective communities:
- Chess Captain Patrick Moore and Vice Captain Ken Anulomsombat
- Basketball Captain Ned Brassil and Vice Captain Marcus Bean
- Rugby Captain Campbell Watchirs and Vice Captain Sieg MacKellar.
It is an honour and a privilege to take on these leadership roles, and I look forward to seeing these boys take up the challenge.
This has been a busy and productive term for staff and students, and I ask that you help your son maintain term-time sleep patterns so they are refreshed and can adjust back to school routines in Term 3. Similarly, if boys spend more time gaming on holidays, they may have difficulty adjusting to school life. I believe boys will need your guidance regarding sleep and gaming during the break.
School resumes on Tuesday 13 July 2021. Boys are required to wear their full winter uniform including their blazer. Boys will also need an appropriate hair style to be organised prior to their return. Information regarding hairstyles is located on each of the year level sections in MyGrammar.
I wish everyone an enjoyable and relaxing holiday.

Boarding
Director of Boarding
Berian Williams-Jones
As we approach the end of the term, I can honestly say this has been a semester like no other. With the ongoing challenge of running a residential community during COVID, the ever-present threat of a lockdown and the seismic effort of relocating a boarding residence from the centre of the campus to a nearby off-site location, this has certainly been a period with some notable hurdles to traverse.
I firstly want to celebrate the resilience and fortitude of all boarders, but especially those boys in Harlin House who have left their ‘home’ to live in 89 Gregory Terrace. I recognise that the move has gone well and that boarders value their new surroundings and facilities. The daily commute certainly hasn’t been the source of frustration that I feared it would be, and I am delighted by the maturity the boys have shown in their new surroundings, and on their daily journey to and from the campus.
What I have enjoyed most is having my office next to the main common room. It has been great to see and hear the boys enjoying each others' company, the table tennis table, the PS4 and the NRL games on our big screen television. It has been rewarding to live so close to the action within the boarding house and to hear the fun and laughter that goes with residential life.
This term has ended on a high with an outstanding Open Day – the busiest in my time at the school – and I was delighted by the level of interest in Boarding. We normally show a handful of families our facilities, but on this occasion we had three full tours with great numbers at each.
Equally, our coffee stall was inundated throughout the day. Queues for both coffees and cakes were always several people deep and tables on the Boarders’ Lawn were consistently occupied. I thank the parents and wider BGS community who contributed to the stall. To everyone who donated cakes, served customers, or assisted with making coffee, I thank you.
I also wish to mention the Boarder Support Group (BSG) for their dedicated efforts – not only on the day, but also in preparation for the event. I am hugely appreciative of the hard work in making the stall a reality and the BGS Boarding community thanks you for your herculean efforts.
In closing, I remind our boarders not to forget the wonderful opportunities that the term break will present. Share with your families the tales of the term, of daring deeds and assessment success, of victories on the oval to a concerto mastered – they will want to know all the stories. Appreciate that your family want to see you, and not just behind the screen of a mobile phone. They want you to be present in those all-important conversations. Please play your part and do you duty. Help cook a meal, wash up, take the dog for a stroll or mow the lawn. Make sure your family knows how grateful you are for the opportunity you have at this wonderful school of ours.
Outdoor Education
Director of Outdoor Education
Derek Jervis
The 9C Outdoor Education program not only provided the class with opportunities to develop the concepts of leading self, but due to forecast severe weather conditions, the students managed adversity with resilience and persistence. With an early warning for 100km winds, the class packed quickly and made the journey back to the safety of Pepperina Hill instead of spending the day hiking on Mt Greville. Thankfully the wind eased, and we could continue with the program in the afternoon. The class managed to return to Mt Greville the following day in beautiful calm and cool conditions for hiking. Every student in the class chose to continue to the summit of Mt Greville and celebrate the class achievement together.
Toby Harpham was an excellent group member. He was recognised by his peers for consistently being helpful during the expedition and campout by collecting firewood and setting up the tents. Thomas Siemon was engaged and active in all aspects of the program. He fully participated in every activity and worked hard for his group during the expedition. Thomas put a great effort into the morning run and set a record time for the year group for the optional 4km loop.
Jay Peterson was a reliable, positive and helpful group member. He stepped up to lead his group navigating out to the campsite and calmly supported his peers throughout the week. Eugene Zheng embraced the opportunities of the outdoor program. Eugene is a keen climber and offered help and advice to his group during the height activities.
Aiden Xiao was recognised by both his peers and the Outdoor Education teachers for the way he displayed integrity and initiative during unstructured activities and during the return to the campsite escaping the severe wind. Nicholas Love proved to be a mature and thoughtful participant who embraced the opportunities and challenges of the program.
Year 11 Outdoor Education Leaders Felix Cavalerie and Jeremy Spink made an excellent leadership team for this program. These leaders worked hard to fulfil their role and make connections with the Year 9 students.
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 9C video link.
Outdoor Education photos are now available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. You can then view the photos by clicking on the Outdoor Education Year 9 folder in Pixevety.
Student Wellbeing
Director of Student Wellbeing Programs

Public Purpose
Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.
- Aristotle
In working with boys over two decades, I have learned they have big hearts and a desire to help others. The number of boys participating in our Public Purpose Program continues to grow, and their leadership in this area reflects they have a greater purpose than self. Our future depends on a generation of thoughtful and confident young men of character ready to forge more inclusive, just, and peaceful societies for all. It is through service that boys develop the capacity to appreciate and understand diverse perspective and experiences, which nurtures their ability to show empathy and compassion for others.
As the term comes to a close, I would like to share with you some of the wonderful ways boys have shown heart.
Homework Club – a long standing partnership between BGS and Communify
Recently, The Courier-Mail shared a lovely story (below) about our involvement in the Homework Club. Our friendship with The Exchange began in 2013 and continues to be strong. Developing reciprocal relationships is essential to the success of any partnership, which the boys begin to appreciate at the Homework Club. If you missed last week’s newsletter contribution by Year 10 Sebastien Roy-Bryant, you can read about what the boys do in the Student Wellbeing section of last week's newsletter.
Push up Challenge – Mental Health Awareness
This month, BGS students have been participating in The Push-Up Challenge, raising awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention, as well as funds for Headspace and Lifeline. From June 1 to June 25, students have been challenged to complete 3318 push-ups – each push-up represents someone who took their own life in Australia in 2019.
Involvement from staff and students has been fantastic, with over 580 members and almost 60 teams signed up to the BGS Push-Up Challenge Community. As of Thursday 17 June, we are the leading school in Australia, having completed over 486,000 push-ups and raising over $11,300! Students have been doing push-ups any chance they get – in Tutor Group, during breaks and at home. A special mention must go to Mr Robertson and the Public Purpose boys, who have been holding push-up sessions.
However, with over a week to go, students have plenty to do – 1000 push-ups still need to be completed. Without school, there should be plenty of time to get them done and bank them in the app!
If you’d like to contribute to this great cause, you can donate here. You can also keep track of the push-up totals. Let’s make sure we #pushtogether into the holidays.
RBWH Patients in Need Program
Calling the BGS community!
Snuggling in our trackie dacks, socks and pullovers are some of the ways we will keep warm this winter. However, for some, these items are hard to access.
The Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital Patients in Need Program run by the Public Purpose committee is calling for your help.
Running for over four years, the program aims to provide emergency supplies and clothing for patients when they need it most.
We need you to go out shopping these holidays to buy new, not used:
- Black tracksuit pants
- Plain T-shirts
- Pullovers
- Socks
These donations will go to patients in hospitals who don’t have immediate support. Every item of clothing helps, and we will be collecting from Week 1 next term.

Signature Programs
Middle School students were actively engaged in their Signature Programs with this week. It was wonderful to see the high levels of collaboration and engagement as the boys navigated their way through the design thinking process to tackle real life problems and scenarios. Our staff were also highly engaged supporting and facilitating each program. Thank you to Mr Grice and all Signature Program coordinators for their efforts throughout the week.
Celebration of the Arts
Last night, we ended the term with Celebration of the Arts. Thank you to all parents and friends who attended this special event. The arts play an important role in the BGS curriculum, providing creative avenues for the development of various skills and important learning dispositions. Thank you to all staff involved in putting together this wonderful evening.
Semester 1 reports
During the holiday break, you will receive your son’s Semester 1 report. Please take the time to review your son’s report with him to identify areas of strength as well as focus areas for Semester 2. Boys should return in Term 3 with a clearer understanding of what they can do to grow as effective thinkers and learners. Term 3 also provides new opportunities within the Cocurricular program. If your son is yet to engage in sporting or cultural pursuits, I strongly encourage him to consider opportunities that await him next term. While participation is not compulsory, we strongly encourage boys to engage in a variety of activities to broaden their skills and experiences.
I wish all families and safe and relaxing holiday break. I look forward to welcoming the boys back to school on Tuesday 13 July.
Middle School Dramatic Production
The (Un)Remarkables
With the incredible success of the Senior Dramatic Production, A Few Good Men, and rehearsals for the Junior Dramatic Production underway, the BGS Drama Department is excited to announce the final show in our 2021 Theatre Season.
This year’s Middle School Dramatic Production, The (Un)Remarkables, is an original work that follows a group of sidekicks who live in the shadow of their superhero companions. When fate intervenes and all the superheroes disappear, the sidekicks-in-training at Hero Academy will learn to play a new role.
The (Un)Remarkables will be an energetic ensemble show that will develop students’ collaborative and performance skills. This production will exploit all the comedic, melodramatic and comic book tropes of the superhero genre while exploring themes of resilience, the underdog and teamwork.
Who: All emerging actors, singer, tumblers and theatre makers are invited to audition from Years 5 to 8
Audition Dates: Tuesday and Wednesday 13-14 July at 3.10pm in the BGS Theatre
How: Prepare one of the monologues over the holidays
Further information about the show, including the rehearsal dates, audition information and participation details are available via Year Level teams or from Middle School Reception.
Please complete the survey link to register for auditions. The survey will ask for any potential clashes with other cocurricular activities and training. We will organise flexible arrangements so boys can manage multiple commitments. The successful cast will be required to pay a production levy of $75 to cover costs of costuming as well as catering for some extended rehearsals.
If you have any questions, please contact producer Jeffrey Lewis jeffrey.lewis@brisbanegrammar.com

Middle School Public Speaking Competition
The annual Middle School Public Speaking Competition allows keen speakers to deliver an original speech to an audience of their peers on a topic of their choice. There is no fixed genre; it may be persuasive, informative, reflective or even narrative.
Boys who wish to participate in the Middle School trials should collect further information from Middle School reception, and complete the Application Register in reception.
For Years 5 to 8, trials to select eight finalists for each year level competition will be held in Term 3:

*If Year Level Assemblies are not permitted due to COVID-19 restrictions, student speeches will be filmed and presented during online assemblies instead.
Cocurricular
Music
Music Tuition Reports
As you may be aware, a new approach to Music Tuition reporting was introduced last year. Instead of the traditional end-of-semester report, the student and teacher have a more regular conversation about how to improve in the weeks that follow. Instead of the report being an end point, it is now a starting point for improvement, which is very exciting.
We are pleased to advise students and parents involved in the program that they can view the results of the recent round of assessment conducted in Week 8. These results are available via Tableau with specific instructions clearly outlined on the Music page of MyGrammar.
ACCESSING COCURRICULAR MUSIC TUITION RESULTS
You can access report data here.
Regular access is available within the Cocurricular Data section of the Parent Data Portal (link available on the right-hand side icon menu in MyGrammar). There will also be a link to the portal available on the Music Tuition page of MyGrammar.
Data Portal > Parent > Cocurricular Data > Cocurricular Tuition
Your son will have access to the same data via the Student section of the Data Portal.

BGS Primary Internal Fixtures
The last round saw seniors fencing against primary, and final bouts with our guests from Mr Hill’s club. The leadership and mentoring on display were fantastic. Thank you to the seniors for giving up their time to be there on Fridays after school. Our younger fencers left with smiles on their faces and most have indicated they intend to fence next year.
Whites Return
Fencers wear their whites for the School Magazine photo. Students should keep their whites after training finishes in Week 9. The photo session is scheduled for October. More details on exact date and time will be confirmed in Term 3 by email. Whites will be collected after the photo for most fencers. Those with annual hire are required to return whites before the last week of school at the end of Term 4.
End of Season Function
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the evening.
Continuing Fencing
Students who would like to continue fencing should look for opportunities from QFA or consider joining a club. More information is available from any of our coaches or contact Ms Chin.
It is not too late to sign up for the State U15 and Cadet Championships which QFA is hosting on Saturday 26 June at Yeronga. Best of luck to all our fencers signed up for the School Fencer Individual Championships tomorrow.
Term 3 Internal Fixtures
There is no training at school during Term 3, but we are fortunate that the Year 12s are organising informal internal fixtures for any fencer in Years 8 to 12 on Fridays of Term 3. To register your interest please complete this form. Thank you to Lucas Raaymakers and our Captain Tom Strooper for leading this initiative. Fencers who have other sport or activities in Term 3 should honour their in-season commitments as a priority. Alternating dates of participation can be arranged with approval from other activity directors and notification to the Year 12s as they put together the draw.
Musketeers Meeting
The next meeting is on 9 August in ISC Classroom 1. New members are always welcome and the membership form can be found on MyGrammar. The Musketeers AGM will be on Thursday 26 August conducted over Teams. More information about this will be available at the start of Term 3.

We were so excited to present the BGS Art Show Embrace - The Art of Togetherness to our community last Friday night. The positive feedback we have received from many of you suggests that you enjoyed it too! Thank you to our talented artists and the Art Department staff for their efforts in creating artwork for everyone to enjoy.
Our student musicians began the night with fabulous music and provided lovely contemporary compositions to set the atmosphere.
The event was a wonderful celebration of the School’s commitment to Visual Art. It also provided a fabulous gallery experience the following day for BGS Open Day. Congratulations to feature artist Alexandra Matthews, whose beautiful paintings and ceramics proved to be very popular.
The BGS Art Support Group extends thanks and gratitude to the many volunteers and team members who generously contributed to the beautiful spirit of the evening. On behalf of the School community, we wish to congratulate all artists and thank the many people who attended.
