The Brisbane Grammar School community recently gathered to recognise and celebrate volunteerism, culminating in the announcement of the winners of the Betty Howell Awards. 

This annual celebration, which began in 2011, acknowledges the outstanding contributions of individuals who have gone above and beyond to support students, staff, parents, and friends of BGS. The award recipients are named in honor of Mrs. Joan Elizabeth “Betty” Howell, a remarkable volunteer who dedicated over twenty-five years of service to the School. 

Betty was the wife of former Headmaster Mr Maxwell Howell, and the honorary Godmother of BGS volunteers. She was an enthusiastic volunteer for big school events such as Foundation Day, Speech Night, and Open Day. Betty brought a touch of class and humanity to everything she did at BGS, and the recipients of the 2024 awards all honour her legacy of friendliness, warmth, and contributing to a sense of belonging at BGS. 

 

For decades, BGS has been fortunate to be able to call upon selfless individuals to support its programs. This tradition of volunteerism has allowed us to maintain strong egalitarian ethos and provide a model of public service for generations of BGS boys. 

During the awards ceremony, Headmaster Anthony Micallef quoted Bill Clinton: "Volunteerism is an act of heroism on a grand scale. It matters profoundly. It does more than help people beat the odds; it changes the odds."
