BGS breaks its World Greatest Shave record

Armed with clippers and plenty of generosity, a brave group of BGS staff and students have donned new hairdos to raise a record-breaking amount for the World’s Greatest Shave.

This year, the School raised the most it ever has in its 25-year partnership with the Leukaemia Foundation, collecting $64,252 in donations – double our target.

In a touching two-day event in the final week of Term 1, dozens of teachers and students – including Headmaster Anthony Micallef and Senior Deputy Headmaster David Carroll – had their heads shaved or coloured to show their support for blood cancer patients.

Led by the School’s Public Purpose Program, students organise and promote the annual World’s Greatest Shave, to raise vital funds and awareness for blood cancer research.

Tragically, 16 people in Australia die from the condition every day.

The School’s top fundraiser was Year 12 student Jarrah Chien who collected $11,522 in donations and was the fourth highest fundraiser in all of Queensland.

BGS raised the most out of all participating Queensland schools and was seventh on the national ladder.

The World’s Greatest Shave has become one of the major events on the Public Purpose calendar.

Public Purpose provides students with insight into the world beyond BGS and how giving back – no matter how big or small – can make a significant difference in the lives of others.
