BGS Giving Day | Thursday 25 August
  • Giving

On Thursday 25 August, we will be inviting the BGS community to take part in the second annual Giving Day.

Giving has been part of the BGS culture since our School’s beginnings in the 1860s.

All funds raised in the 24-hour period will be allocated to the construction of the BGS STEAM Precinct and to help provide greater access for boys from a wide range of backgrounds through needs-based bursaries.

Our school has long supported students who could not otherwise afford to be here, and in turn those boys have enriched our community.

One of the many success stories from our needs-based bursary program is Raziq Qasimi, a former refugee who came to BGS after fleeing ethnic persecution in Afghanistan.

Raziq graduated in 2014, studied law at QUT, and now helps financially disadvantaged Queenslanders as a Litigation Support Officer for Legal Aid Queensland.

Another Old Boy who attended BGS thanks to a bursary scholarship is Stephen Baronio.

Stephen hails from a farming family in Stanthorpe and his mother is a member of the Kungarakan people from the Northern Territory.

He came to BGS in 2015 as the first recipient of the Fenwick Bursary, which was created by Old Boy Simon Fenwick to cover BGS tuition and boarding fees for regional or Indigenous students.

After spending six years at BGS as a boarder, Stephen graduated in 2020 and is now studying at UQ.

One of our primary goals at BGS is to prepare students for university and beyond. That’s why we have begun one of our most ambitious projects to date – the construction of the STEAM Precinct.

Due to open midway through next year, the STEAM Precinct will provide a learning environment that closely resembles the modern workspaces found at university and in industry.

Students will benefit from this innovative new learning space with university-standard laboratories, flexible classrooms, and a 300-seat auditorium. There will be opportunities for experimenting with DNA mapping, 3D printing and artificial intelligence.

Once completed, we expect STEAM to be more than just a new building – it will be a vision of the future.
