Leadership in the Middle School
  • Students

Our five School Values play an integral role in creating a strong and supportive culture within our Middle School. Boys entering BGS become quickly accustomed to our values: Learning, Leadership, Respect, Endeavour and Community through instruction, modelling and experience.

Leadership is central to the School’s purpose “to educate boys within an innovative learning culture that nurtures their intellectual, physical and emotional wellbeing to become global citizens who contribute to their communities.”

Serving others or ‘servant leadership’ is one way through which boys at BGS endeavour to become thoughtful and confident men of character. This year, our Year 6 Public Purpose Committee led the Middle School in the MS Readathon, raising over $12,000 and promoting reading across Years 5 to 8.

Our Year 8 Public Purpose Committee led the community in the Christmas Hamper Appeal, encouraging each class to donate gifts and food items to support local families in need. Our Year 7 students were once again invited to participate in the Learn to Lead program where they engaged in ‘Soap for Charity’, making handmade soaps to contribute to the Christmas hampers. Boys participating in the Learn to Lead program attended a leadership induction where they learned about servant leadership and were assigned various leadership roles within the following groups: product development, resourcing, creative design, packaging and marketing.

While there is a strong focus on leadership for all students and opportunities to lead through service exist for all boys, formal leadership opportunities occur through roles such as Class Captains and Wing Captains.

Each semester, each class elects two Class Captains who epitomise our School Values and serve as role models for others to follow. Eight Year 8 boys are also chosen to lead their Wing at various interwing events, including Track and Field, Swimming, and the Middle School Mile.

Throughout 2020, our Head of Activities collaborated with our Director of Student Wellbeing Programs to develop a series of leadership workshops tailored to strengthen the boys’ understanding of leadership. The workshops will be ready for implementation in 2021.
