Out for Australia

BGS Old Boy Alan Wu ’01 has been appointed board member and Non-Executive Director of Out for Australia – an organisation that supports and mentors LGBTQIA+ aspiring professionals. Wu was the youngest board member of Oxfam Australia and is currently a board member of Democracy in Colour – Australia’s first national racial justice campaigning organisation. He was named in the 40 under 40 Most Influential Asian-Australian Awards (2019), was in the first cohort of the Obama Foundation Leaders: Asia-Pacific (2019) and was named Australian National University’s 2016 Young Alumnus of the Year. Wu is also currently a senior advisor at Open Government Partnership.

Ivy league

Congratulations to BGS Old Boy Clancy Doe ’20 on his admission to Yale University where he will embody their vision of student-athlete. Clancy is an exceptional academic and rower who has been selected not only for his abilities but also for his promise to contribute to the wider fabric of the Yale community. Yale contributed nine rowers at the Tokyo Olympics.

Vaccinating the homeless

A team including BGS Old Boys Jeremy Hunt, Michael Fielding and Varun Karnik (all '16) and BGGS alumna Lili Wackwitz '16 have launched an initiative to vaccinate homeless people for free. The VacSeen Project aims to facilitate free flu vaccination services for at-risk people.

AI-powered

A strong science student while at BGS, Alastair Blenkin ’08 has incorporated his mathematical skills with a Law degree to set up ProcurePro – a digital platform used by construction companies to subcontract trades. Alastair is also an adjunct professor in Law and Technology at UQ, where he guest lectures to budding entrepreneurs. ProcurePro has just raised $2.6m to expand overseas.

Accelerated engineering

Endla – an engineering software company co-founded by BGS Old Boys Riley O’Donnell ’14 (CEO) and Michael Moore ’14 (CTO) – has been backed by Y Combinator, the most renowned startup accelerator in the world. Y Combinator has previously backed companies like Airbnb, Stripe, Dropbox, Coinbase and Reddit. Endla provides software that enables substantial engineering efficiency and performance improvements. They have deployed software for companies like Origin Energy and Senex Energy.

Data drives success

Former luxury car salesman and BGS Old Boy Glenn Harwood ’02 is achieving global success with his start-up company AlgoDriven. Dubai-based AlgoDriven uses data to value used cars and trade-ins in 600 car showrooms across 13 countries. Glenn – who started his first computer business while still at school – says almost one third of Australian used cars are analysed using AlgoDriven.
