Understanding the power of resilience when plunging into the entrepreneurial world was the takeaway message for Old Boy Chris Titley ‘98 at yesterday’s Old Boys’ Business Breakfast. 

Against a backdrop of the glorious Brisbane River and over a hot breakfast at The Grove Rooftop, there was no shortage of inspiration when panel members and successful entrepreneurs Wayne Gerrard, Llew Jury and Monica Bradley took the stage to share their stories with 70 guests.

Fintech expert and Director of Sub11 Mr Titley was also the panel host, and he said the importance of resilience during a business journey proved to be a resounding piece of advice for people looking into startup opportunities. 

“The journey of entrepreneurship isn’t a straight line - there will be curve balls,” Mr Titley said. 

“You need to be able to accept highs and lows. 

“When you are faced with different circumstances – not just within your business but economically – you become more comfortable dealing with it.”

This event’s program ‘Concept to Commercialisation’ prompted discussions on hot-button topics, such as rising interest rates, macroeconomic uncertainty, artificial intelligence and much more. 

Mr Gerrard, who is the Operating Partner of QIC and former Queensland Chief Entrepreneur, offered the advice of needing to “give before you get”.  

Chairperson of Circonomy, Container Exchange and Beyond Zero Ms Bradley encouraged the audience not to be afraid of the changing economic landscape, adding that “this is the age of opportunity”.  

Managing Partner and Founder of Sprint VC Mr Jury pointed out that leaving a legacy is an important motivator when creating a long-lasting business.

Mr Titley said the BGS Old Boys' Business Breakfast was a great opportunity for people to get advice and share stories. 

“It is a powerful tool for networking, for information and to just break bread with people, after what has been a wild ride through years of lockdowns and uncertainty.  

“The best piece advice is to do something that you immensely enjoy and are deeply passionate about.  

“That will shine through when you are selling your story and when you are pitching in front of people," he said.
