This week, Year 7 took part in an exciting three-day Innovation Summit - an immersive program designed to explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) through hands-on, real-world challenges.

During the Summit, students had the opportunity to engage in a variety of dynamic STEAM-based programs in fields like forensic science, marine conservation, the rise and fall of civilisations, and more. Each program applied a ‘design thinking’ approach to solving genuine problems.

Director of STEAM Education, Tanya Nielsen said “Students were working in new teams across their cohort to embrace challenges, take risks and explore a universe of possibilities.”

A Look at the Innovation Summit STEAM Programs
Forensic Science
Students stepped into the role of forensic investigators, applying biology, chemistry and physics to scrupulously solve simulated crimes using real-world techniques like DNA analysis, fingerprinting, and crime scene reconstruction.

Jurassic Earth
Unearthing the science behind prehistoric life, students dug into paleontology, evolutionary biology and genetic engineering, examining fossil evidence to debate the ethics of de-extinction.

Ocean Avengers
Determined to see a brighter future, students brought marine conservation and sustainability to the forefront, tackling challenges such as coral bleaching, plastic pollution, and climate change. They applied their design thinking skills to propose innovative solutions.

Empire Reboot
Analysing the rise and fall of civilisations, young historians critically examined historical insights to imagine the future of global societies, exploring themes of governance, technology and societal change.

Art of Contagion
Unpacking the science of epidemics and pandemics, students zoomed into the intersection of biology, history and public health through simulations and data modelling, developing strategies to manage global health challenges.

Robopocalypse
With a goal of expanding and understanding global capabilities, students meticulously designed and programmed autonomous robots to complete complex tasks, exploring the impact of artificial intelligence and automation on society.

Wall Street
Students were introduced to the world of finance and economics, learning about the complexities and influence of stock markets, investment strategies, and business innovation through engaging simulations and entrepreneurial challenges.

Future Anything
This entrepreneurial program empowered students to design innovative solutions to current global issues. It encouraged creative thinking, social innovation, and dynamic pitching using design thinking methodologies.
