Evaluating and improving our 'thinking education'
At BGS we are committed to educating boys within innovative learning cultures that nurture their intellectual, physical and emotional wellbeing. Our aim is for boys to become global citizens who contribute to their communities. To do this, boys need the ability to think flexibly, strategically and ethically into their unknowable future. We are pursuing this long-term vision through our Effective Thinking Cultures initiative.
Effective Thinking Cultures (ETC) has been evolving at BGS since 2016. ETC is about designing classroom cultures and learning experiences where thinking is explicitly valued and practised, to ensure our boys make optimal progress. We encourage and enable boys to think across their learning experiences and to develop a sense of ownership of their learning. This holistic development contributes to a ‘thinking education’.
To build this ‘thinking education’, we have invested extensively in professional learning for teachers. We encourage teachers to collaborate and reflect critically using data and theory. Data, collected by the teachers from their own classrooms, gives real-time information about the nature and progress of their students’ learning. Teachers then make informed decisions about their students’ responses to their teaching practice. The other input, educational theory, provides teachers with research-informed principles as a basis for planning and reviewing their practice.
This capacity to critically reflect on data and theory has been supported by the development of specific components of professional infrastructure and culture. For example, we have established cross-faculty professional learning teams that meet regularly to allow teachers to discuss how they design and reflect on particular learning experiences. This enables both smart borrowing of good practices, and greater consistency in classroom experiences for the boys.
Four years of formal monitoring and evaluation of how our teachers are responding to these initiatives has helped us improve and refine ETC and led to the development our Framework for Thinking. Teachers use this Framework as a bridge between theory and practice to assess the data and make principled decisions and teaching plans.
It is also helping to establish a school-wide understanding of effective pedagogy – the reasoned basis that guides teachers’ practice. We are currently working with the Assessment Research Centre and the Centre for Program Evaluation (both part of the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education) to advance this important work. This is allowing us to warrant our practices and decision making in an evidence-informed way.

Humility and empathy
I have had some interesting chats with my children in the car recently. Thanks to Brisbane traffic we have had plenty of time for enlightening conversations.
Of the many topics covered, my favourite discussion was about how humility helps us connect with others. I was discussing team selection with one of my sons, and the disappointment or excitement he felt when he either missed out or made a team.
I remember congratulating him on his selection, but he wanted to talk to me about the person he replaced. He said he knew what it felt like to miss out on selection, and that someone else would be feeling that now. I was impressed by his empathy.
I found this conversation was a wonderful learning opportunity for both of us. I am looking forward to our time in the car next week. I might see what I can learn about revision for exams!

ICPA Conference
It was a great privilege to represent BGS at the 50th anniversary of the Isolated Children's Parents’ Association (ICPA) in the western Queensland country town of Cunnamulla.
The event attracts delegates from across Queensland to highlight and champion issues surrounding children’s education in various rural and remote settings. Among attendees are ICPA branch and Education Queensland representatives, politicians and boarding school providers.
The theme that consistently underpins discussions is the battle to provide equal opportunity for all children. This year’s discussion included how legislation and COVID Safe requirements have impacted the use of school facilities.
It was a wonderful opportunity to consider and remember the challenges faced by our families from the land. The impact of rain or drought are certainly felt more intensely out west. I often urge Boarding Tutors to remember the conflicting emotions felt by our country boarders, given boys’ desire to help their family and knowing the sacrifices their families make for them to attend BGS.
Being the 50th anniversary, there was an air of celebration to proceedings, with some attendees claiming to have been at the very first committee meeting in Cunnamulla all those years ago. It was a privilege to be there and to see the Governor of Queensland, Paul de Jersey, AC, recognise the efforts and endeavours on behalf of rural families.
Outdoor Education

9A began the cohort’s Outdoor Education experience this year. The Year 9 program is a significant step up in outdoor activities with a focus on leading self. The students are given more responsibility, undertake a three-day expedition to Mt Greville and participate in some challenging height activities.
During the expedition, the groups are responsible for starting and maintaining their own campfire with a limit of one box of matches for three days. This is a great opportunity for the students to engage in experiential learning with real world consequences. This thinking task often highlights the need for persistence, collaboration, and reflection to manage their fire for warmth and cooking. 9A also had an excellent opportunity to view the lunar eclipse. The class took some time during their evening at Bitenbar to observe the eclipse during a magnificent clear and chilly autumn night.
Samuel Hains was an excellent student at Outdoor Education. Sam was an enthusiastic and empathetic participant who helped his peers and made great contributions to his group. Even after the long day hiking on Mt Greville, he continued to find ways to help. Thai Bui demonstrated the components of leading self during all activities. He showed independence and initiative, took responsibility for group tasks and navigation, and showed great leadership potential.
Matthew Sebastian showed courage and determination during the height activities. Matthew was willing to challenge himself and demonstrated the motto at Moogerah that “it’s the effort put in that counts”. Xavier O’Sullivan embraced the opportunities to develop his camping skills and knowledge. Xavier committed to starting his campfire with only a flint and steel. He persisted with this task and learned a lot about the technique. Morgan Gao was a great participant in the knot tying challenge. Morgan spent his free time learning and practicing the four knots and was ready to challenge the teachers. Although he did not beat the staff, he was the closest challenger!
Outdoor Education leaders Angus Reinhold, Kiyan Rahman and Jackson Xu were excellent role models for the Year 9 students and made significant contributions to the program and the boys’ experience.
A short movie of the boys' experiences can be viewed via the 9A video link.
Outdoor Education photos are available via the School’s photo management system, Pixevety. The platform helps the School safely manage and share our photos. This user guide provides instructions on how to access, navigate, search and download photos. The system uses single sign on and must be accessed via MyGrammar > Useful Links > Pixevety. Once activated, you will be prompted to enter a login email and password, but please do not attempt to login this way. Instead, go back to MyGrammar and click on Pixevety again. You can then view the photos by clicking on the Outdoor Education Year 8 folder in Pixevety.

Years 9 and 10 Subject Selection
Director of Digital Learning
Greg Dabelstein
Subjects offered in Years 9 and 10 have changed.
The Deputy Headmaster Teaching and Learning recently explained these changes in a letter to all parents of affected students. Planning is well underway to adjust the timetable to reflect changes to the curriculum.
As part of the planning, all students in Years 8 and 9 have been surveyed about which subjects they may choose from those on offer. The survey captured students’ initial thoughts to predict possible selection trends. The survey does not replace the formal subject selection process. All students will complete subject selection in Term 3 prior to the spring vacation.
This information will inform the eventual timetable structure. Other resourcing requirements may also need to be adjusted. The number of classes, room requirements and teacher availability are all important considerations.
In summary, from 2022, students in Years 9 and 10:
- will continue to study English, Mathematics, Science (each eight lessons per fortnight cycle) and Physical Education (four lessons per fortnight cycle)
- will choose two subjects from each learning area in the table below:
learning areas | students select two subjects from each learning area |
---|---|
Humanities and Culture (each for eight lessons per fortnight cycle) |
Geography History Language (French/German/Chinese/Japanese/Latin) |
Creative and Artistic (each for six lessons per fortnight cycle) |
Design Drama Music Visual Art |
Please note: Students electing to study a language must have studied that language previously at the School. Please refer to the School’s Languages’ Policy on MyGrammar for further information.
The study of Geography and History in Years 9 and 10 is recommended for their study in Years 11 and 12. The study of a language in Years 9 and 10 is a prerequisite for its continuation in Years 11 and 12.
These selections are designed to ensure students maintain a balanced course of study while being able to specialise in subjects they enjoy. Years 9 and 10 are also important preparation for the Senior years, in terms of building foundational knowledge and mastering different modes of assessment.
In Term 3 students in Years 8 to 10 will make decisions about their subjects as part of the regular subject selection processes that take place each year. We will provide further information at this time.

Head of Middle School | Rebecca Campbell
Preparations are well underway for this year’s Celebration of the Arts to be held on Thursday 17 June. Celebration of the Arts is an opportunity for our Middle School boys to showcase their curiosity and creativity through various artistic mediums. The evening also provides a culmination to our Signature Programs, with boys in Years 7 and 8 sharing the outcomes of their design thinking projects. We are thrilled that Celebration of the Arts can proceed this year and look forward to welcoming all families to this special Middle School event. Communication has been sent to all parents outlining the schedule and process for securing tickets.
It was great to see our Middle School boys involved in this week’s Interwing Cross Country. Our interwing events provide boys across all year levels the opportunity to come together to participate and support their team. I am grateful to Mr McFarlane and our Wing coordinators for their creativity and persistence to find a way for the boys to participate in this activity. Due to the lockdown at the end of Term 1, we have rescheduled the Interwing Track and Field carnival to Term 3. Details regarding this event will be provided closer to the time.
Middle School Sport | Player of the Week
Winter Sports Uniform
The game day uniform of our Middle School football and tennis players has been excellent so far this season. With colder weather, we remind students to wear a BGS tracksuit with their playing strip. Please do not allow your son to wear non-BGS tracksuits or jumpers.
Similarly, open footwear is not appropriate. Please ensure the boys wear closed-in shoes. Boys staying to watch other games are required to change into their formal academic uniform. Again, given the cooler weather, this should include the school jumper.
Interwing Cross Country
The West Wing boys were the first team to complete a collection day this week. The team was well represented across all Middle School year levels and the strong contingent ran a very impressive 578 laps or 173.4 kilometres in their 12-minute time allocation.
South Wing accepted the challenge and replied with 735 laps for a distance of 220.5 kilometres to be the competition leaders.
Week 8
- Tuesday - South
- Wednesday - East
- Thursday - North
- Friday - West
Congratulations to Aaron Alphonso and Kingston Struthers on their selection in the City District tennis team. The boys beat a very strong field to progress through to the next level of competition, the Met North regional trials.

Brain Health and Concussions
Head and concussion injuries in sport, and their associated risks, have rightly attracted significant media attention recently. In an effort to reduce these serious incidents, sport governing bodies have reviewed their rules of play and are vigorously discouraging contact on or around the head. Thankfully, these rule changes have carried over to GPS competitions.
Governing bodies have also developed protocols to assess potential concussions, remove concussed players from competitions, and impose mandatory stand-down periods before injured players return to play. While professional athletes may be subject to different stand-down periods than those imposed in youth sport, a stand-down does apply to all. These protocols are an important starting point in improving safety.
There is no best fit for head injuries; different injuries have different recovery periods, which can differ from person to person. For the very few who suffer a head knock and/or a concussion, we want to aid diagnosis, assist rehabilitation, and be more certain that boys are genuinely ready to return to play after the mandatory stand-down periods.
BGS has entered an initial three-year program using a Neuroflex® VR device to assist our tracking of brain health and the management of head and concussion injuries, starting with the BGS Rugby program. You may already be aware of the research by World Rugby using these devices and protocols.
All students playing BGS Rugby will be baseline tested before the 2021 GPS season starts. Our Performance Development team will administer the simple 15-minute test with the help of Digital Health Organization who supply the Neuroflex® VR device. Players who suffer a suspected concussion during the season may be tested again at the game, and results will be compared to the student’s recorded baseline to assist diagnosis. The student may be tested again when he returns to school, and at the end of the stand-down period, before being permitted to return to play. This will allow us to monitor his progress and recovery.
I want to be clear that these tactics are not aimed at facilitating an earlier than mandatory return. Instead, we wish to be as confident as possible that boys are ready to return when the stand-down period ends.
We expect to learn a great deal from the use of this device, and we also anticipate expansion of the testing in future to include more students in more sports, with a view to enhance not only our tracking and recovery from head and concussion injuries, but more broadly, the brain health of our BGS students.

BGS Gymnastics Championships
The traditional BGS Gymnastics Championships were last Saturday 29 May. It was a very enjoyable competition, and a great opportunity for Gymnasts from all Divisions to have a final hit out before the GPS Gymnastics Foundation Cup this Saturday.
There was some strong improvement from the Division 3 Gymnasts, with many of them scoring a personal best. Congratulations to the top three all around gymnasts, Rafferty McDonnel (first), Gabriel Levy (second) and Sebastian Bryan (third). The Division 2 team showed why they are favourites for this weekend with a great team performance. Congratulations to the top three all around gymnasts, Sebastian Ashby-Cliffe (first), Lachlan Russell (second), Harrison Pearse (third). Our Division 1 gymnasts continued their strong start to the year with some impressive routines. Congratulations to Alistair Hoole, Fletcher Griffiths and Nicholas Hoole who finished first, second and third respectively.
The excitement builds for this Saturday 5 June, when BGS hosts the GPS Gymnastics Foundation Cup. I wish all the Coaches and Gymnasts the best of luck and hope to see all the hard work of the season pay off with some good results and enjoyable moments.

Robotics
Success at RoboRAVE
Three BGS Robotics teams joined 750 competitors at RoboRAVE Australia at the University of the Sunshine Coast last weekend. Events included robot sumo, alpine climbing, and maze and line following. Our teams competed in a blue-ribbon event, Megabot Madball, in which pre-programmed robots navigate a series of obstacles, autonomously collecting and distributing field elements. Without a driver controlling the robot, the engineering is important, but careful coding made all the difference. Our teams persisted to solve challenges and improve their robot design and coding. Our most successful team, BGS One, placed second and should be proud of this result. Our other two teams placed fourth and fifth, battling all day to perfect their coding.
Due to COVID restrictions, the teams were on their own in the pits and playing field without a coach. This tested our teams and their resilience. Congratulations to all teams for performing well on a tough day. Between matches, our teams engaged in the robotics trade show, university presentations and interactive technologies.
RoboRAVE is an International Robotics Competition for teams aged eight to adults. Their motto is “Today's Play, Tomorrow's Pay." Their three goals are fun while learning, sharing and teamwork. It was fantastic to see BGS Old Boy Dr Damien Kee '97 presenting the opening address at the competition, and he also found time to talk to our teams during the day.
This event is outstanding practice for the upcoming FIRST Tech Challenge competition beginning next term. Our robots will be on display at BGS Open Day on 12 June in CB103/104. Come along to talk to team members, have a drive of our robots and see robotics stars of the future in action.

Round 6 against Nudgee was a cold and windy day on the tennis courts. The jumpers were out, and spectators had coffees in hand for this much-anticipated fixture. Years 10, 11 and the Opens at the BGS Tennis Centre created a positive atmosphere that lifted the boys to start the day. The Year 10s made quick work of their opponents, as did the Seconds, Thirds and Year 11s after them.
Special thanks to the committed Years 7 and 8 boys who came out to watch the Firsts before their matches at Nudgee. They then joined the junior boys at the away venue, arriving to see the Year 5s put in a dominant performance and the Year 6s avenge the loss from the 2020 GPS season. The Years 7 and 8s followed their lead and went on to comfortable victories. Well done Middle School tennis players!
BGS Tennis won the day against Nudgee with 25 team wins and 0 losses. This is the fourth time this season in which BGS Tennis has not lost a single team match. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you to Just Photography who were at the BGS Tennis Centre last weekend to capture some shots of the boys in action again.
First IV
This week’s team was Alex Patane, Kanika Jayathilake, Sam Fancutt, and Charlie Hume. Nudgee were a strong one-loss team looking for a share of the premiership. Nerves and anxiety were up for the start of the singles matches. Quick wins by Sam and Kanika got BGS off to a good start. Charlie and Alex would eventually fight their way to victory against tough and determined opponents.
BGS then showed their strength in doubles to close out the next two matches for an unbeatable 6-0 lead. Oscar Tan and Isaac Smyth then stepped in to successfully replace Alex and Charlie in the final doubles matches. Oscar and Isaac showcased the depth of our program with a solid doubles finish to take a 8-0 overall win.

We are asking the generous BGS community for donations of:
- Cakes, slices, biscuits, loaves
- Baked savoury goods (eg muffins)
- Preserves such as relish, lemon butter, jams, marmalades.
Not sure what to make? Large cakes, fudge and gluten free items are always popular!
Donations can be dropped off after 9.00am on Open Day to the classroom opposite the Cake Stall location outside The Lilley Centre.
We will repackage your cakes, biscuits etc. Bring all food in labelled containers and your donations will be repackaged. Empty containers can be picked up at the end of the day.
- If you provide gluten free or other special dietary food, please advise of all ingredients on a label.
- Please don’t make anything requiring refrigeration (eg cakes with fresh cream).
Any queries, please contact our cake stall convener, Peggy Ekeledo-Smith, via e-mail pekeledo@me.com
Rugby Support Group (Normanby Blues)
Normanby Blues season launch | Saturday 5 June
Excitement is building for the upcoming 2021 BGS Rugby season – particularly because of innovations in player safety, coaching and technology. The Normanby Blues invite BGS parents and Old Boys to the 2021 Rugby season launch at Wests Rugby Club on Saturday 5 June at 7.00pm where you can find out more.
A feature of the evening will be Ron Cochrane’s “Coaches Q&A” session. If you have a question you would like asked anonymously (humorous or serious) please submit it via the Normanby Blues email address (normanbyblues.support@brisbanegrammar.com).
Something else to look forward to is the bid-calling by one of our own rugby dads, as he auctions the unique #1 BGS Rugby supporter’s cap. This cap is the first of a numbered set the Normanby Blues will issue each year to accelerate our community’s support of the BGS Rugby program. In 2021, funds will go primarily to the wearable technology initiative, which has already equipped the First XV.
Thanks to everyone who booked early, but if you do not yet have a ticket please don’t despair. Online bookings will remain open until Saturday morning and we are able to process ticket sales at the door.
Most importantly, we wish the boys playing in the trial matches against Terrace well for this weekend. This is an opportunity to draw deep on the hard work they have been putting into training.
