The Heritage Precinct
The Heritage Precinct connects our community to the Brisbane Grammar School story by providing access to an incredible collection of artefacts, school magazines, books published by Old Boys, photographs and much more.
With plenty of comfortable chairs, the precinct is a place to connect, converse and share stories about the meaningful contributions our community has made – not only to Brisbane but around the world. It is a link to our past, present and future.
Three original classrooms, which first opened in 1881, have been converted into an Archives preparation room, a School Museum, and a Reading and Research room, which is named after Stuart Stephenson, the School’s fourth Headmaster and great chronicler of our history.
The Heritage Precinct is located on the ground floor of E Block of the Spring Hill Campus, near The Gun, on Gregory Terrace.
Donations
The collection is made up of hundreds of beautifully preserved artefacts, such as academic and military honours, sporting trophies and medals, foundation documents and old photographs. Many have been generously donated by families with deep connections to BGS.
Our School Archivist is always happy to discuss potential donations.
A Celebration of Community
The construction of the Heritage Precinct is an example of how the BGS community comes together to honour the School’s legacy. The space is a celebration of the hard work of leaders, teachers, current and former archivists, cocurricular staff, Old Boys, and students and their families. As we know through the School’s motto nil sine labore, hard work is at the heart of our history.
A special feature in the museum is the acknowledgement of the Indigenous history of Spring Hill. Associate Professor Ray Kerkhove and Professor and Old Boy Benny Wilson '02 were commissioned to provide an essay encapsulating the history of Traditional Owners presence on the site, which subsequently informed the content in the map in the museum.
Opening Hours
The Heritage Precinct is open for general visits on Thursdays, between 9.00am – 12.00pm. Alternative arrangements can be made by appointment.
