"Laying the foundations of another 150 years of educational excellence."

The Board of Trustees and the Senior Leadership Team present the strategic aims and plans for Brisbane Grammar School for the next five years (2018 – 2022).

Building upon our long history of educational achievement, these aims and plans outline a vision and direction for long-lasting delivery of educational excellence across all facets of the School’s operations, and provide impetus for future developments.

Our Senior Leadership Team will be actively working towards major objectives over the next five years. More precisely, delivering a sesquicentenary publication and coordinating our 150-year celebrations, refining planning for the biggest and most important infrastructure project in the School’s history (STEAM), driving the year group campaign to raise our Bursary Fund to $20 million by the end of 2020, and providing superior learning experiences for all students.

The Board of Trustees and the Senior Leadership Team welcome the views of all stakeholders in the BGS community. We anticipate that the publication of this strategic plan will stimulate discussion within the BGS community, all of which will safeguard the long-term success and sustainability of Brisbane Grammar School.

The Brisbane Grammar School Strategic Plan 2018 – 2022 provides a vision for the School’s future. Underpinned by the School’s Mission and Core Values, the Plan offers the outline of strategic imperatives, explicit objectives and agreed targets.

Brisbane Grammar School has been a leader in the education of boys since the School’s foundation in 1868.

Our motto nil sine labore (nothing without work) and our ambition to be the best school for boys in Australia, and an international leader in teaching and learning, has inspired the School to offer an environment where boys realise their promise and pursue their talents. We remain resolute in our commitment to developing thoughtful and confident men of character who contribute to their communities.

For 150 years, Brisbane Grammar School has enjoyed strong enrolment, academic excellence and sporting and cultural outcomes that confirm our commitment to an ethos of excellence in boys’ education. The School seeks to provide a set of experiences, which promote a purposeful growth towards self-discovery and good citizenry.

The Board of Trustees and the Senior Leadership Team are committed to a course of improvement to enhance provisions that benefit BGS students and the BGS community.

Our new Strategic Plan builds upon the five priorities identified in the preceding plan:

  • A commitment to educational leadership in teaching and learning, wellbeing and cocurricular programs;
  • The maintenance of a community that is safe and a culture that promotes collaboration and care;
  • The delivery of school infrastructure that furthers student learning, wellbeing, sporting and cultural interests;
  • A sustainable financial strategy that supports the ongoing development of the School; and
  • An obligation to ensuring that the BGS identity is synonymous with excellence in education.

We are excited about what the future offers our community and look forward to making Brisbane Grammar School a better place for all stakeholders.

About Brisbane Grammar School

History

The Grammar Schools Act, passed by the Queensland Government in 1860, provided for the establishment of secondary education in this state. By 1868, enthusiastic public subscribers had raised enough money to enable the establishment of our school; Brisbane's first grammar school and the first independent boys’ school. In that same year, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, laid the foundation stone at the School's original site in Roma Street.

The doors of the new school opened on 1 February 1869 with 94 students and four masters under the leadership of Headmaster Thomas Harlin.

In 1881, the School moved to its present site, and the magnificent Great Hall and classrooms opened that year. With the opening of the Boarding House in 1886, the School became one of the first to provide unified boarding facilities on site. Forward-looking science laboratories followed in 1912.

The School has grown enormously since those early days and has consistently anticipated educational needs, providing a resource library and language laboratory in 1968, before Commonwealth funding made them standard facilities in schools. With the purchase of the former Primary Correspondence School in 1993 at the southern boundary of the School, the site encompassed sufficient space to address the future needs of 1200 students. From 2003, when the Middle School opened for Years 6 and 7, the School educated approximately 1400 students. Then in 2014, the School introduced Year 5, and in 2015 Year 7 became the new secondary school starting point. The School now caters for over 1700 students.

In 2010, the School opened the most important academic building in its history – The Lilley Centre – that combines technology-rich, cutting-edge, flexible learning spaces with a well-resourced library and programs designed to assist students to navigate their learning in the knowledge era. The Centenary Building, refurbished in 2014, provides the same technology-rich and flexible learning spaces for Middle School students. In the same year, the School opened a new Mathematics precinct in the lower level of The Lilley Centre, and 2016 saw the opening of an impressive study and recreational facility for senior boarders.

Four important and impressive sporting facilities – the Northgate Playing Fields (1997), the Indoor Sports Centre (2000), the Tennis Centre (2016) and contemporary rowing facilities – offer our student athletes superb locations to demonstrate their talents.

The School also offers an outstanding Outdoor Education Centre at Lake Moogerah. The centre has modern living facilities and outstanding high and low ropes courses and climbing tower. In 2017, the School acquired two adjacent parcels of land to further enhance BGS students’ outdoor experiences.

Brisbane Grammar School values the pursuit of excellence through a broad liberal education. The preservation of the School's traditional ambience, the fostering of pride in its achievements and its integral place within Brisbane’s history are continuing objectives, which we hope, will give all students, past, present and future, a sense of belonging to the BGS community.
