Investing in Bright Futures

The Bursary Fund provides life-changing opportunities for boys in need, ensuring a BGS education is accessible to a diverse range of students, regardless of their financial circumstances. By preserving and growing the principal, the fund generates income to support boys who might otherwise be unable to attend BGS.

The goal of the fund is to support 10 per cent of the student body, which is approximately 200 boys. Needs-based bursaries have been a priority at the School since students commenced in 1869.

Changing Lives Through Opportunity

Your support can open the door for bright, motivated young men whose families may have not been able to afford a BGS education.

A bursary doesn't change just one student's life but can have a flow on effect that enriches local communities for the betterment of the world around us.

FAQs

As of December 2024, the fund is currently assisting 28 students, with financial support ranging from 25% to 100% of tuition fees. Both day and boarding students benefit from this vital assistance.

An impartial financial needs assessment is conducted by an external provider, EdStart, which provides recommendations on the level of support for each applicant. The fund is managed in a long-term diversified portfolio through QIC, with oversight by the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees. The Committee approves the annual distribution of funds to ensure continued support for deserving students.

Donors can support students by contributing to the Endowed Bursary Fund (in perpetuity) or with a Fixed Term Bursary.

The minimum contribution to name a bursary in perpetuity in the Endowed Bursary Fund is $50,000. This contribution can be spread over five years (i.e. $10,000 per year).

The minimum contribution to name a Fixed Term Bursary is $75,000, equivalent to funding 50% tuition fees for one student for six years. However, the Board of Trustees may agree to name a Fixed Term Bursary for fewer than six years. This contribution can be spread over the time that the student is at BGS (i.e. $12,500 per year).

In 2016, the graduating class started a new tradition by establishing a Year Group Bursary in lieu of the customary valedictory gift to the School. Each cohort since then has been encouraged to pay it forward – to pass on the privilege and opportunity they will benefit from to someone else.

Since the beginning of 2017, parents who have made voluntary contributions are supporting their eldest son's Year Group Bursary (unless parents split donations between more than one sons' peer year). Voluntary contributions are tax-deductible donations on fee statements.

We encourage Old Boys to support their Year Group Bursary – your gift will provide boys with life-changing opportunities.
