Beginning at Brisbane Grammar School as a student back in 1979 was a daunting experience. Very early in Term 1 I learned that my Year 8 Form Class would be one of the first to journey to Moogerah; an almost mythical place that I had heard many colourful stories about - some true and others no doubt some fiction.
On the bus trip out, I struck up a conversation with a fellow student. He would become a very close friend and a fabulous ally during our school years. The bus pulled up at the gate, and we carried our bags inside. We were met with the bright enthusiasm of Jim Johnson and his trademark ‘come on you guys lets go.’ His energy was contagious, and the view of the lake and the mountains blew my mind.
Back in 1979 I could not have foreseen the journey ahead. To say that Moogerah has been of significance to me would be an understatement. My twelve-year-old self could not have imagined that I would end up living there for two decades as Director and Teacher, and now as Grounds Staff.
That first experience sparked a flame in the pit of my belly that has never gone out. I acknowledge and pay respect to Ugarapul, Melanjali and Jaggera mob whose country I have become a part of and am grateful every day to be on, in its ever-changing moods, colours and seasons.
