Celebrating 50 Years of Moogerah

For half a century, Lake Moogerah has provided an idyllic setting for shared experiences and lasting friendships, shaping memories that have stayed with generations of BGS students.

Beyond the Spring Hill campus, Pepperina Hill has provided Brisbane Grammar students an outdoor education program that provides lessons in leadership, problem solving, communication and the importance of Country and community.

From hiking through mountains and balancing on high ropes to kayaking on the lake and camping under the stars, the site is not only an outdoor classroom, but also a place where skills are learnt, confidence built and friendships forged.

Fondly referred to as 'Moogerah' by past and present BGS students, Pepperina Hill has evolved over the years. However, the learnings, memories and connections remain. Its magic forever etched in hearts and minds long after leaving BGS.

In 2026, Brisbane Grammar School is proud to celebrate 50 years of Moogerah. This is an important moment in the school's history, and we invite you to be part of it.

Join us as we celebrate the moments that made Moogerah great for the countless students who have crossed its path. Find out more about the redevelopment project and how you can contribute to the future of Pepperina Hill.

Every boy who has spent time here carries a piece of it with him; a respect for nature, for culture and for community.

The major milestones of Pepperina Hill

                                                      1970

Plans were drawn up and an application to lease 24 acres submitted. Plans included permanent buildings and a jetty. The vision was to use the camp for classroom excursions and holidays for boarders.

                                                      1971

Despite approval from the Albert Shire, plans were suspended while a government committee conducted a survey on the uses of the area. The School's plans collapsed when it was discovered that a tavern was to be built near the proposed camp site.

                                                      1973

Initiated by President Betty Vann, the P&F re-activated the idea of establishing a school camp, forming a dedicated committee chaired by Professor Don Mugglestone and including the Headmaster and several parents. The committee secured a lease for 20 acres of land from the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission at Lake Moogerah. Professor Mugglestone then chaired the revised Moogerah Camp Development Committee, which oversaw early planning work, including the submission of water supply, soil, and climate reports and the engagement of architects to begin designing the camp facilities.

                                                      1974

In February, a social day and barbecue were held to introduce the new camp site to the community, and the property was fenced. Tree planting commenced in March as early site development began. Around this time, new architect Colin Trapp streamlined the building plans, reducing the projected construction cost from $387,000 to $170,000.

                                                      1975

Weekend working bees commenced, led by Ron Shepherd

                                                      1976

The P&F Auxiliary purchased a Landrover, trailer, ten canoes, and forty life jackets to support camp activities. In Term Two, Dan Winkel took up his appointment as Camp Warden. On 30 May, the camp was formally opened by Queensland Governor Sir Colin Hannah and was named “Pepperina Hill.” In June, the first camp was held with Form 2B, accompanied by Maths teacher Mr Kevin Smith. On 15 June, the Headmaster took the entire staff to Pepperina Hill.

                                                      1978

Jim Johnson becomes Camp Director. Pedagogy of Outdoor Education is articulated and accelerated. Courses in Astronomy and orienteering developed for Form Camps

                                                      1979

Doug Morrison secured a grant of $16,000 to establish an astronomy observatory at the camp. The Student Representative Council (SRC) also held functions to raise funds for Moogerah. During this period, a rope obstacle course, including a flying fox, was constructed, and the camp motto, “It’s the effort put in that counts,” became established.

The P&F donated $2,275 for student backpacks. Students David Jeacoke and Peter Hastings undertook a supernova search program devised by the Astronomical Association of Queensland using the Celestron 14 telescope. International outdoor educationalists from the United States and Canada visited Moogerah on a research trip. After the drought broke in late 1981, lake levels rose from 9% to 75%, and the observatory was completed.
