Celebrating 50 Years of Moogerah
For half a century, Lake Moogerah has provided an idyllic setting for shared experiences and lasting friendships, shaping memories that have stayed with generations of BGS students.
Beyond the Spring Hill campus, Pepperina Hill has provided Brisbane Grammar students an outdoor education program that provides lessons in leadership, problem solving, communication and the importance of Country and community.
From hiking through mountains and balancing on high ropes to kayaking on the lake and camping under the stars, the site is not only an outdoor classroom, but also a place where skills are learnt, confidence built and friendships forged.
Fondly referred to as 'Moogerah' by past and present BGS students, Pepperina Hill has evolved over the years. However, the learnings, memories and connections remain. Its magic forever etched in hearts and minds long after leaving BGS.
In 2026, Brisbane Grammar School is proud to celebrate 50 years of Moogerah. This is an important moment in the school's history, and we invite you to be part of it.
Join us as we celebrate the moments that made Moogerah great for the countless students who have crossed its path. Find out more about the redevelopment project and how you can contribute to the future of Pepperina Hill.
Every boy who has spent time here carries a piece of it with him; a respect for nature, for culture and for community.
- Mr Derek Jervis, Director of Outdoor Education
Honour the Past
Where the Journey Began
The vision for a permanent school campsite began in 1968, when Board Chairman Bob Henderson set his sights on creating a place where students could learn beyond the classroom. Inspired by earlier traditions, when boarders travelled by train and boat to camp, fish, and surf along the Stradbroke Islands, the School initially pursued land on North Stradbroke Island near Jumpin Pin.
However, despite a lease application in 1970, those island plans fell through, and by 1973 a new chapter began on at Lake Moogerah. Early designs imagined a village of stilted dormitories nestled among shared learning, dining and recreation spaces. The final build, however, delivered a more practical 34-bed dormitory with dining and kitchen facilities.
Over time, the campus and learning environment evolved from a simple extension of classroom studies into something far more distinctive. While the initial vision for Moogerah was to provide a place for practical studies and fieldwork in subjects such as biology, geology, geography and economics, this was to change.
Under the guidance of long-serving Director Jim Johnson, it was redefined as an Outdoor Education Centre, shifting the focus from camping to immersive, hands-on learning and outdoor educational experiences that set it apart from the city campus and continues to shape its future today.
Imagine the future
The Beginning of a New Chapter
Brisbane Grammar School is embarking on a significant restoration of Pepperina Hill to ensure the centre meets contemporary safety, accessibility and wellbeing standards, while preserving the natural beauty and unique character that make it so special.
As Moogerah approaches its 50th anniversary in 2026, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to honour its remarkable legacy by renewing the Pepperina Hill site for the future, ensuring it continues to inspire and support boys for decades to come.
This project will deliver a staged program of upgrades, completed by 2027, that will:
- Enhance student wellbeing, comfort and safety
- Align facilities with BGS’s pastoral care model
- Support the growing importance of hands-on, nature-based learning
- Build capacity for future generations of students
We are inviting the BGS community to play a meaningful role in the shaping the next chapter of Pepperina Hill.
An investment in the development is an opportunity to continue the legacy which started 50 years ago. Be part of providing unique learning experiences that improve the physical and mental wellbeing of our students, while teaching them about the importance of caring for the natural world around them.
The restoration project is more than a building project, it is an investment in a legacy that reflects the values of Brisbane Grammar School.
We invite you to support the project and create a lasting impact for the next generation of Brisbane Grammar boys. Every gift, no matter how large or small, will ensure Pepperina Hill remains a place where leadership, confidence, culture and community continue to flourish.

“It takes them back to grass roots, it gives them an opportunity to be with nature, to strip back...and be with mates in the outdoors.
“It offers a different type of learning and growth experience."
- Rachael Dauber, President of the P&F Auxiliary
