BGS Art Show
Friday 11 June – Gala Night
The 2021 BGS Art Support Group is excited to announce the 52nd BGS Art Show will be held with an Opening Gala Night on Friday 11 June, and continue throughout BGS Open Day on Saturday 12 June.
This very special event in the BGS calendar is an occasion for all students, family and friends of the School, and the wider community, to come together through art.
Our community’s shared story of living in this period of uncertainty creates a bond between us and allows us to reflect on what is important. With this in mind, the name and theme of this year’s show is Embrace – The Art of Togetherness.
We may not be able to physically embrace, but we do embrace the opportunity to reunite and celebrate together.
We warmly welcome our guest Feature Artist, Alexandra Matthews, along with a host of other talented artists to present a show of spectacular 2D and 3D art, photography and jewellery for your enjoyment, appreciation and purchase.
This fabulous social event is our opportunity to raise funds for the arts and other support groups at Brisbane Grammar School, while enjoying art and having some fun in the process!
We hope you will join us and look forward to your support.

COVID-19 has heightened a need for social distancing, and in many ways our homes have become a sanctuary for our closest loved ones.
This year, the 2021 Art Show Embrace – The Art of Togetherness, features an artist whose work strongly captures this sentiment.
We are proud to announce Alexandra Matthews as our 2021 feature artist. She is a well-known Queensland artist and her work is an expression of her deep connections to her local Brisbane area. “I've always had an interest in creating images with a narrative. My Urban Landscape paintings are an extension of that,” Alexandra says.
Having moved to a ‘renovator’s delight’ in Red Hill 36 years ago, the area and its architecture greatly inspired Alexandra. Her paintings narrate an intimacy with urban landscape as it transitions and transforms with light, natural and artificial. Alexandra’s work is highly detailed as she strives to depict architectural features accurately and capture the essence of the iconic area, where the present and past collide. Painted in a hybrid of illustrative and realism, the detail is achieved through revisiting a view multiple times on neighbourhood walks.
The promotional material for the Art Show features Alexandra’s work, Budgie Love, from her current collection. Alexandra's artwork appears in the Brisbane Grammar School Art Collection and Australian and international private collections, including the Lord Mayor of Brisbane Collections. She has won many prestigious art prizes and has been Artist-in-Residence many times at BGS. Her works continue to be one of the best sellers at the BGS Art Show.

The Art Support Group is a parent volunteer group operating for over 50 years. The group raises much-needed funds for the development and maintenance of the School's art collection, emerging artist scholarships as well as funding for key art resources and projects in conjunction with the BGS Art Department. Funds raised by the Art Support Group have also funded projects for other BGS support groups, such as Basketball.
In the coming years, the Art Support Group is working on a permanent art project as part of the new STEAM Precinct, scheduled for completion in 2023. The new precinct will create an environment that will excite, engage, and inspire both students and teachers in the promotion of richer learning experiences.
The Art Support Group hosts the annual BGS Art Show which accompanies the celebrations of Open Day. The BGS Art Show is the key fundraising event that aims to enrich the cultural lives of students and the wider BGS community.
