The object of the Association is to effect a useful bond of union between the past pupils of the Brisbane Grammar School on lines which will promote a spirit of comradeship and true manliness and a high moral and intellectual standard amongst the members of the Association and will further the welfare of the School in the community.Mr JG Nowlan (OBA Secretary and Treasurer, 1910)

The Brisbane Grammar School Old Boys’ Association was one of the first to be established in an independent boys’ school in Queensland.

In 1884 a small society of Old Boys called the ‘Reunion’ was formed, operating for two years. However, it was not until 1 June 1898 that the present body, the Brisbane Grammar School Old Boys’ Association (OBA) was formed with then-headmaster, Reginald Heber Roe, appointed its first president.

In July 1920, the School Jubilee celebrations were represented by a committee representing the OBA and the War Memorial Committee. Raising funds for the War Memorial Library was carried out largely by the OBA, with past student Charles Bennet Fox writing ‘The Golden Book’ entries of Old Boy veterans of the Great War.

In 1938, the Association formed an appointments board to help past and present students find suitable jobs to counter the effects the Great Depression had on them finding employment. In the post-war years the OBA contributed funding to memorial projects, such as the World War II Honour Board in the Great Hall, unveiled in 1949, and the gymnasium and swimming pool, which opened in 1953 and 1954 respectively.

More recently, the Association has assisted with appeals associated with the Centenary Building Fund in 1964 and The Lilley Centre, which opened in 2010. The bridge linking the main campus with the Indoor Sports Centre was officially named the Old Boys’ Bridge in recognition of the OBA’s financial contribution to the School’s structures.

As a custodian of the School’s traditions, which includes the annual Old Boys’ Reunion Dinner, the OBA encourages fellowship between different generations of Old Boys and service to the School community.

The Association’s Annual General Meeting is held in April each year.

The OBA is a custodian of the School’s history, representing the Old Boy cohort. The Association works with the School’s archivist to gather, preserve and promote this shared history.

Privacy Legislation Policy Statement to our Members

Following the introduction of Privacy legislation, the OBA has an obligation to inform you as an OBA Life Member that we obtain information about you from your membership nomination. We may also obtain and collect informationin relation to your participation in OBA activities and communications.

The School has also provided to the OBA your name and contact details and the year you left the School.

The OBA will use this information in connection with OBA social and sporting events and other activities, which exist to keep members in touch with each other and with the School, and to support the School in various ways. We will not pass on information about you to anyone else, except to allow the OBA to carry out these and any related purposes. Any person or organisation who is provided with any information about you for these purposes will also be required to agree not to use or pass on such information for any other purpose.

You have a right to access and to correct any errors in the information we hold about you. We wish to keep the information accurate and up to date and would appreciate your help in that regard. Please contact us with any enquiries.

We will continue to send you information unless you advise us to the contrary.
