Brisbane Grammar School has officially opened its new Strength and Conditioning facility, the Sports Science Gym, in a blue-ribbon ceremony on Monday 14 July.
The state-of-the-art facility forms phase one of the School’s Sports Science project aimed at improving student wellbeing, athletic development, and learning through innovative spaces.
It also contributes to BGS’ vision to continue leading in the sports science sector, supporting both student outcomes and strategic goals. The facility was made possible thanks to the generosity of our community during our 2024 Giving Day, which directly funded this project.
Meeting the highest standards in safety, design, and functionality, the gym was transformed into a modern training hub after years of meticulous planning and coordination.
Key features of the Sports Science Gym include:
- Custom bumper plates, plyoboxes, kettlebells, dumbbells, racks, cables, benches, GHDs and more — all installed and operational.
- Full wrestling/stretching mat area with 800mm wall padding, generously provided by PLAE as part of their compensation for shipping delays.
- New technology integration, including digital displays showcasing training programs and visualisations of the full Sports Science vision.
- Bespoke flooring and custom graphics highlighting the School’s values and identity.
The space was showcased to prospective parents during BGS’ Open Day, where visitors were able to see first-hand the impressive transformation and the commitment BGS made to athletic excellence.
Deputy Headmaster of Cocurricular, Greg Thorne said the Sports Science Gym project continues to demonstrate the power of collaborative planning at BGS, including the inclusion of educational technology expertise and alignment between facility design and learning innovation.
“The Gym was a central feature of BGS’s strategic growth and future global sporting connections,” Mr Thorne said.
With the gym now complete, focus will shift to delivering the Sports Science Laboratory in phase two: a blank-canvas facility that will integrate data science, technology, and engineering with sports science learning. The Lab will serve as a key space for interdisciplinary learning and research, further enriching the STEAM curriculum.
Completion of the Lab is scheduled for early 2026, aligning with BGS’ broader educational and community engagement strategy.
“The completed gym stands as a symbol of what we can achieve together, and we look forward to sharing further milestones as the BGS Sports Science Lab progresses.”
