The Great Hall Society gathered for a special morning tea last Wednesday to celebrate 27 years.

Hosted by Headmaster Anthony Micallef and joined by members of the Senior Leadership Team, the Old Boys’ Association and the Board of Trustees, the gathering provided a wonderful opportunity for the Brisbane Grammar School community to honour those who have decided to remember BGS in their will.

“Let us honour not only those who came before us, but also those who continue to shape our future, such as the members of The Great Hall Society. Your stories remind us that education is not merely about acquiring knowledge; it is about fostering relationships that last a lifetime,” Mr Micallef said in his welcome address.

Before enjoying a tour through the School’s newest facilities, Headmaster Micallef shared our School story with guests. He highlighted anecdotes that demonstrate the shared values, innovation and resilience of our community, as well as the progress milestones that have been made possible thanks to the inimitable altruism of our community since the School's inception in 1868.

“The significance of this history cannot be overstated. It serves as the foundation upon which we build our future. By understanding where we came from, we can appreciate the values instilled in us—respect, endeavour, community, learning and leadership,” Mr Micallef said.

Board members were invited to speak, and School Historian, Archivist and long-term History teacher Mr Chris Price made a virtual appearance, introducing guests to the significance of the Heritage Precinct.

“It says the school is looking to the future, and it’s also remembering its past and foundations,” Mr Price said.

Paying homage to the formation of the Great Hall Society in 1997, Mr Micallef acknowledged founding patron Major General John Pearn AM RFD ’57, Mr John Story AO ’63, Mr Ian Whittle ’66, and all past and future donors, celebrating “...the profound impact that our Old Boys and parents have had on society, professions, families and communities.”

Mr Micallef emphasised the life-changing impact of bequests, with many having contributed to student bursaries over the years, as well as the acquisition of new resources and learning spaces like Moogerah Outdoor Education facility, the STEAM Precinct, and the new Heritage Precinct, just to name a few.

It is always enriching to welcome back Old Boys and their families to BGS so many decades later, still emblazoned with the Brisbane Grammar School vision and legacy.
